Brennan's not as dense as she looks. She knows things; she really does. Not just science things. Heart things, too.
She knows about the looks he gives her. She knows his eyes, their shape and color exactly. She knows the way they darken around the edges when he's mad, and how the corners crinkle when he laughs.
And she knows how he looks at her when he doesn't think she notices. She knows the way they soften and study her.
Like right now, she's tracing the stem of her wine glass when she looks over to him at the bar and catches him again. It just takes a second for the mask to fall back over his face when she smiles at him. He smiles back.
Brennan knows heart things.
She knows the looks, and she knows what he meant that night. He scared her and he saw that and he took it back, but she knew. She knows.
And sometimes when he's smiling at her. Like right now. She wishes he hadn't taken it back.
