Chapter 1 – Birthday Surprises

I looked in the mirror admiring my new dress. It was a birthday gift form my best friend and the most revealing one that I had owned in about two years, mostly because of the ten crescent shaped scars that were strategically placed at equal distances from the left side of my neck to my left wrist. I winced as I recalled the memory from my fifteenth birthday party that changed every aspect of my life; however I am seventeen as of today and do not want that dreadful day from the past worrying me now, after all it is a little late for that.

"Rebekah," my mom called from downstairs, "Brooke wants to know it you are picking her up for school?"

"Yes ma'am. Tell her I will be there in ten minutes." Brooke had been my best friend since before kindergarten and only lived five houses away. I took one last look in the mirror before leaving my room to go pick her up.

As I walked out the door I came to a complete stop. Sitting in the spot where my old car had been last night was a brand new, red convertible, BMW.

"Happy Birthday, Sweetie!" I heard my dad say behind me.

"This is for me?" I asked

"Yes, Just be careful." My mom said.

"Thank you!" I said excitedly almost knocking them over with a hug.

"That dress looks great on you and it is just your color." Brooke said as she was getting in my car.

"Thanks."

"I love your new car too." She said with a smile.

"I know, isn't it great? Mom and Dad surprised me with it this morning, but I am guessing you knew about it since that is not the first thing you commented on."

"I did. They swore me to secrecy last week. Are you alright you look a little stressed for it being your seventeenth birthday."

"I'll be fine, I've just been thinking about what happened at my fifteenth birthday party."

"I know it is kind of hard to believe we have been vampires for two years now."

"I haven't even had time to think about my date with Shane tonight."

"That is serious."

As I we arrived at school and I pulled into my reserved parking spot in the student car lot of Beta Hill High, I was beginning to remember that dreadful day. I was one of the most popular girls at school. My tan was out of this world, not to mention real. I had long, naturally curly black hair and had just started dating Shane. Now I was really pale…

"What are you thinking about?" asked a deep voice coming from behind me. I didn't have to turn around to know who was speaking I would know that voice anywhere.

"Shane!" I exclaimed turning around. "I'm glad to see you."

He handed me a beautiful red rose before enveloping me in a hug and kissing me. "I could say the same."

"That kiss said it all."

"Do you want to go hunting before or after our date tonight?" Shane was also a vampire, which is a mistake I made before I realized what I was.

"Doesn't matter to me, where were you planning on going?" I replied kissing him again.

"Let's go after, as for where that's a surprise, and it is Friday so plan on being out late."

"Okay, well we better get to class you know how Mr. Carmickle is about tardiness." I reminded Shane. "Last year nearly half of the class had to stay for detention after being late form gym."

"Bye the way," Shane said as we walked hand in hand to first period, "here is your birthday present."

I unwrapped the small gift to find a blue velvet box, inside was a silver necklace with a small diamond pendent.

"It's beautiful, thank you."

"Only the best for the girl I love."
