Another chapter for your enjoyment. I know that there are a lot of fun things that can be done with this diagon alley trip, but I skipped over them because I hate to write the standard start of the year stuff. It just gets really repetitive and dull. Hopefully you all think it's okay though. Hogwarts up next.
Enjoy!
CHAPTER 11
It was January when they passed the home inspection and February when construction started on the new Torchwood location. Torchwood 4, located in Scotland. Torchwood 3 was being rebuilt as well, because monitoring the rift was vital, but Jack and Ianto would be damned before letting Hayden stay in a school full of people with no concept of modern medicine or technology without them at least in the same country. And although Jack had plenty of savings to take care of them all without work, they couldn't let a Torchwood 1 situation happen again, which meant they had to stay in control. For the first little while, Ianto would head up the new team in the rebuilt hub, while Jack started up the Scotland team, then someone else would take over in Wales and report up to them. After that, they could try to wrangle a bit more control over Torchwood 2 in India.
Hayden wasn't thrilled about having to leave behind his friends in his dance and skating groups, but he could always dance down corridors and skate on a lake or something in the winter, which was good enough for a little while if he got to learn magic.
It was an interesting feeling, not having a voice in his head telling him how awful he was all the time, and his parents were certainly pleased that he was easing slowly off his prescribed medication, but he had doubts, about actually being a wizard, especially since Tom had spent so much time saying that he wasn't one, or at least, wasn't worthy to be one, which was confusing. He didn't say anything though, because the last thing he wanted to do was upset his dad and tad. He'd deal with it if it came to that.
His last dance recital ended with cheers and applause in late May, after which, they all went to Aunt Rhiannon's for dinner. It was the first time Jack had come with them and it was nerve-wracking.
It ended well enough though, with Uncle Johnny only making a few uncomfortable jokes. Hayden liked his aunt, which seemed to be a huge relief to his tad, and he was honestly sorry that they'd be leaving.
"But why are you going to Scotland?" Rhiannon asked. "Never heard of any big stuff happening there. It all goes down in London, doesn't it?"
Ianto nodded. "We're starting up a new branch. We had a London one, but it didn't end particularly well. All the daleks and aliens in the sky. Canary Warf."
"Oh my god, Ianto! You were in that? You-!"
He ducked her swat and shrugged guiltily.
"And you," she said, pointing to Jack. "Were you there too?"
Jack grinned. "No, I've been exiled to Wales for years. The London people don't like me."
Ianto smiled at that. "'S true. All sorts of complaints all the time. That's how I knew where to look when I lost my job there."
"He was persistent about it too. Flirting constantly."
Ianto blushed and Rhi laughed along with Jack.
Later, Rhiannon cornered her brother. "You two haven't worked it out yet, have you?" she accused.
"We're trying."
She smiled sympathetically before hugging him. "I'll miss you, you know."
"Yeah, but I won't really be gone for a few months. I'm heading up rebuilding this office until we can get someone trained to take over. I probably won't be out of here till Christmas."
ooo
It took ages to get the teams sorted out, hand-picking people from UNIT mostly, but also searching for unnoticed specialists in various fields.
Lois Habiba, of course, was a no-brainer, and Gwen would move to Scotland with them after her maternity leave. Martha Jones though, turned down a job, no matter how much money they offered, so doctors were a serious problem. They spent weeks combing through records before coming up with just one potential candidate.
When July came around though, and Hayden received a letter saying to expect a representative of from Hogwarts the next day, Ianto was especially excited to go with his son on his first real introduction to the world he'd soon be a part of.
Unfortunately, Jack was already putting things together in Scotland, frequently complaining about Myfanwy not liking anything he fed her.
ooo
There was a knock on the door and Hayden jumped from where he was curled in the corner of the couch with his latest physics text. "Tad!" he yelled. He looked around and saw the note.
Problem logging into the computer systems. Be back as soon as I can.
It wasn't unusual for Hayden to not notice people coming and going around him and it was considerate of his Tad to not interrupt him when he was trying to figure something out, but he wasn't used to handling things on his own and he didn't know if he should answer the door or not.
He'd hesitated long enough that whoever it was knocked again and Hayden bit his lip and pushed his hair out of his face anxiously before squaring his shoulders and making with the courage. Two deep breaths and a reassuring glance to two places he knew there were weapons, he patted the phone in his pocket and opened the door.
"Mr. Harkness?" It was the woman he'd met in January. "This is Professor Dumbledore. He's the headmaster at Hogwarts and would like to speak to you and your parents about specific arrangements."
The old man, who looked frankly ridiculous with the oddly shaped glasses and long hair and beard, not to mention the purple suit, smiled in what was probably supposed to be a comforting or reassuring way. "Hello young Mr. Harkness."
"Are your parents here?"
Hayden glanced at the drawer with the gun in it again and then shook his head.
McGonagall looked concerned. "Will they be back soon then? We did send a letter ahead."
"Le, dwi'n gwybod," he coughed awkwardly, not having realized he'd gotten so used to speaking Welsh with just his Tad around and repeated in English. "Yeah, I know. I, uh, saw it."
This was really awkward. He hadn't had many chances to speak to adults without his fathers around and both of them looking at him so intently was making him uncomfortable.
"Um, Tad should be back soon, but... there was a problem at work and he left a note. I'm not really sure."
The professors exchanged a look that Hayden had no idea how to interpret. "I'll just... call him," Hayden said, before stepping away from the door and eying the drawer again, pulling the phone from his pocket.
The professors politely looked away as he spoke to his father in Welsh. Dumbledore seemed to find the ceiling especially fascinating.
Finally, Hayden put the phone away and pulled a laptop from the shelf under the coffee table, powering it up quickly and answering the video call.
"You can, um, come in," Hayden said, setting the laptop down on the table. Ianto was just barely in the screen, leaning over to help someone with something probably, since there was muffled talking in the background. When he finally sat back down in front of the screen, he turned it to face him, where he was typing rapidly into a keyboard in front of several different screens.
McGonagall looked very shocked and Dumbledore seemed unreasonably fascinated.
"This couldn't have come at a worse time, Ianto said to them, still typing. I was planning to be there, but I have to finish this first. I don't suppose you could wait around for an hour or so?"
Dumbledore jumped at Ianto speaking and McGonagall blinked. She was fairly used to the muggle world, but not many had this kind of technology. Or at least they didn't tend to use it around her during her student visits.
Harry sat back down on his corner of the couch, picking up the physics book from where he'd left in on the seat and setting it back down in his lap, his fingers tapping against the open page nervously.
"Please, have a seat," Ianto said.
McGonagall cleared her throat as she took a spot on the other end of the couch, allowing Dumbledore to sit in the chair next to it. "We're here to discuss the school—it's policies, expectations, and any questions you may have about it—and to go over the situation regarding keeping Mr. Harkness' previous identity a secret. Also, you indicated that he has special medical needs."
Ianto nodded, showing he was listening, despite not looking directly at them.
"We would also like to introduce Mr. Harkness to the wizarding world in general by taking you to purchase his school supplies."
"Alright then, what are the classes like? Will there be one-on one teacher instruction? Are there advanced courses?"
McGonagall smiled. Dumbledore simply observed, for the most part, but did interject the occasional comment, as well as providing a steaming pot of tea, which made Hayden jump and stare at it suspiciously.
Finally, all the question about the school in general had been answered and they had moved on to the boring stuff. Hayden, content in the knowledge that due to his medical needs, he'd be allowed to see his fathers on the weekends and that he'd be able to write if anything went wrong in between then, went back to his physics book, only to look up again when Ianto came through the door.
"UNIT changed their access codes," he said irritably to Hayden. "So, I think we've been over most everything now. We appreciate you waiting."
He'd been forced to pause their conversations three times, but they'd decided that visitation would be arranged, accommodations would be made to suit Hayden's comfort range, he would absolutely be allowed access to his medication and released for doctor's visits when necessary, and he would be able to work directly with his professors to recieve more advanced instruction if necessary. It had also been agreed once more that Hayden would be allowed to stay as Hayden Harkness with no one but them and his future head of house knowing his previous identity.
Ianto stood behind where Hayden sat and accepted the offered letter, containing a list of required supplies. "How are we getting to this Diagon Alley?"
Dumbledore replied, with a disconcerting eye twinkle that they had temporarily connected their home to the floo network and waved a wand at the wall below the thermostat controls, a fireplace growing from it and then flames springing up inside. Ianto raised his eyebrows. "And that's a normal display of magic?"
"Far from it," McGonagall replied. "Very few witches and wizards are able to do magic that powerful wordlessly, and only after decades of training."
Ianto nodded, watching Dumbledore suspiciously as he pulled a sack out of the inside pocket of his purple suit. "Floo powder," the wizard explained, "is used as a common form of travel. The powder is thrown into a connected fireplace, from which the user is able to simply state their destination." He pulled some powder from the bag and threw it into the flames, which turned bright green. "It will have to be a magical person going through, however. Young Mr. Harkness could accompany Professor McGonagall and you could accompany me." It sounded vaguely, but not entirely like a question and Ianto hesitated, but nodded.
"Get your shoes, Hayden."
He nodded and jumped up to get them from the closet, grabbing his backpack at the same time and depositing his physics text into it.
Ianto rolled his eyes, then nodded to Professor McGonagall and Hayden. With a deep breath, he stepped forward, and repressed most of the flinch that came from the professor touching him. She stepped into the flames without hesitation. Hayden following with his eyes closed and his bottom lip between his teeth. "Diagon Alley," she said. And then they spun away.
Ianto locked the front door and then took the offered arm of the old wizard before ducking into the fireplace himself. The fell out into a dingy pub, coughing violently. Hayden was still coughing as well.
Dumbledore made his farewells then, stepping back into the fireplace with the briefest of nods to the man behind the bar.
The alley itself was bright and... well, magical. As they waited in line at the bank, Ianto asked, "Did you work out the wind-force problem?" and Hayden couldn't have looked happier for the change in subject, talking rapidly about everything he'd discovered that morning in his reading.
The money system was confusing, but thankfully, the bank did exchanges by check, so without much prelude, they were given a sack of gold that Hayden stared dubiously at. They got the listed supplies without much ado, passing up on a pet and getting robes off the shelf rather than tailored. Hayden would have done it if Ianto had insisted, but he could tell his son had already had much more contact than he was comfortable with.
When Professor McGonagall flooed them back to their flat and left, the pair had quite a bit to tell Jack about.
While Hayden was talking to his Dad, Ianto pulled out the newspaper he'd bought. The Daily Prophet. The headline was "Philosopher's Stone Stolen From Hogwarts?"
Nicholas Flamel, aged 683, is the sole known creator of the Philosopher's Stone. It should, therefore, be by no means considered odd that he would choose to hide this stone for safekeeping. However, the choice of locations may leave something to be desired. Although the location the stone at the time of theft has not been officially revealed, it has been heavily implied that it was left in the capable hands of Albus Dumbledore (Headmaster of Hogwarts, Supreme Mugwump of the International Confederation of Wizards, Chief Warlock of the Wizengamot, Order of Merlin First Class, ect.) and as we all know, there was some disturbance involving the fleeing of the most recent Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor, Quirinus Quirrel at the end of May. Could there be a correlation? Is it possible that Quirrel, the man so changed by his experiences abroad that he could no longer look you in the eye or speak without a stutter, could be responsible for the theft of this great stone? Both Dumbledore and Flamel refused to comment.
Ianto set the paper down and contemplated the situation. Surely, if something had happened at the school, it would have been mentioned. Still, it was good that they'd be checking in regularly.
In other news, Luna is definitely going to be a friend to Hayden and there will be interaction between him and Hermione as well. If there's any other characters that you'd like to see, please feel free to leave that and I'll see if I can fit it in somewhere.
Thanks for reading!
