Chapter 10: The Hand of Erwin Smith
Jean Kirchstein and Connie Springer sat lazily on the hot earth beneath them, driven to sweat like the other trainees by the strength of the waking sun.
Connie took a swig from the canteen in his hand, the water dripping from the corners of his mouth. Both he and Jean had decided to take a break from yet another sparring session that Keith Shadis had forced on them, but they also had another motive; to watch Annie kill Eren.
"Oh, she flipped him again...how many times is that?" Connie took another sip.
"It's the fifth time..." Jean answered, enjoying the display far more than he should.
"Wait, Annie-Ugh!"
"Make that sixth..."
"Is it just me, or has she been acting weird?" Connie tilted his head up to his fellow trainee, "I mean, she usually trains with Eren and gives him advice here and there, but now she's just kind of-"
"Stop, Please, I-aah!"
"She looks like she's trying to rearrange his internal organs?" Jean offered.
Connie nodded "Yeah, sounds about right. Not to mention she's been telling everybody off. Annie never used to do that. She usually just kind of ignored everyone. Now she's acting like a-"
"Unlikable bitch?" Jean offered again.
"Yeah!"
"If Mikasa were here though, we would have another fight on our hands."
Connie looked up to the sky, his face full of longing and white sunlight, "Man, I wish I had gotten to see that..."
Jean scoffed "Why? We already know what the outcome would be every time."
Connie rolled his eyes and poured the remaining water in his canteen over Jean's head "Be careful, your crush is showing."
Jean shook the water from his head and glared down at the short trainee from under wet eyelashes. Connie's only response was to dig in his ear absentmindedly.
"Plus who cares what you say. No one's going to take the word of the guy with the biggest crush on Mikasa."
Jean crossed his arms over the damp fabric now stuck on his chest, "I'm not the only one! Practically every guy has a crush on her!"
"Well, I don't. I prefer softer girls like Krista," Connie smirked and made a show of hugging himself and making kissing sounds.
This time Jean scoffed "I don't get the appeal. Yeah, she's pretty. But everyone here puts her on some sort of ridiculous pedestal, like she's some perfect angel. Well I got news for you pal, her shit stinks just like everyone else!"
"You take that back!" Connie snapped. "You probably think the same of Mikasa!"
"I would never go as far as to say that Mikasa's shit doesn't stink. In fact, that's the appeal!"
Unfortunately, it was at that exact moment that Jean and Connie noticed a presence directly behind them. They both turned to see Mikasa's impassive eyes.
She walked past a frozen Jean, "I don't want to know..."
As she continued toward the unrecognizable pile of bruises in the dirt that was Eren, Jean tried to say something. Anything to try to explain himself, but it was to no avail.
He felt himself start to deflate as Connie roared with laughter. "I wonder what you think your chances are now!"
Jean hadn't heard a word, deafened by the depth at which he had fallen into his own cocoon of misery.
He felt like crying, "Why does this shit always happen to me?'
Armin Arlert opened his eyes slowly. Through the haze of his mind he was barely able to register where he was. The last thing he remembered was that awful place and Corporal Levi's voice.
After that was a complete blank.
"How are you feeling, Armin?"
He jolted, suddenly aware of the man in the room. He recognized the blond hair of Erwin Smith who stared at him with a hint of concern.
He tried to speak, but what came out was an unsightly fit of coughing.
Erwin offered him a glass of water and Armin took it and drank it greedily. After the entire glass was emptied, He looked down sheepishly and offered a meek apology at his pathetic display.
"I'm sorry, it's just been sort of a long day...Commander."
"I can only imagine how terrifying the situation must have been for you."
Armin was unable to meet Erwin's eyes, instead staring into the traces of liquid left in the bottom of the glass he'd been given. He didn't know what to say to the man. He figured he should thank him for saving his life. After all he had no clue what would have happened to him and those people if Erwin and Levi had not shown up.
"Armin, would you like to share your thoughts?"
Armin scratched his head in embarrassment, realizing that he had probably spaced out and ignored the high ranking soldier right next to him in favor of his own thoughts.
"I'm sorry."
"No need to apologize I often find myself doing the same."
Erwin took the glass from him and set it near his bedside before turning back to the smaller blonde.
"Armin, I apologize in advance for this, but as the situation right now is rather hectic, I am going to need you to shine some light on what exactly occurred down at the church."
Armin gave a small nod of understanding. He had hoped that he wouldn't have to tell anybody about what he had almost done. The very thought that he had almost taken a man's life made him feel sick. Though, he had learned something very important about himself in the midst of the din.
He had learned that he was capable of killing to survive and that he would do it again without hesitation.
In that moment he felt his confidence grow.
"When I woke up, I realized that I was trapped..."
Armin did not notice Erwin's gradually growing smile as he spoke.
"So he basically mind-fucked them?" Levi said., The small Corporal was sitting across from his Commander who was hastily writing something down. Levi was slightly impressed as he thought about how the kid had escaped.
"Yes...in simpler terms. I find it remarkable that he devised such a cunning plan with so little time." Erwin continued to write and Levi grew curious.
"What are you planning for the kid, Erwin?"
Erwin paused his writing to stare at his subordinate.
""You misunderstand Levi., I am not Armin Arlert's puppeteer only his witness. Anyway, I have some business to attend to., I would you like you to watch over him. I don't want anyone talking to Armin until I come back."
With a final swipe of his hand Erwin finished whatever he was writing and stood up, his body angled towards the door. "Also, would you kindly inform your squad about what happened to Armin? Make sure that your squad members are the only ones informed of this."
Levi raised an eyebrow, "Why?"
As impressive a feat it was, it didn't seem like something that needed to be shared with the rest.
Erwin said nothing and stepped out, leaving a frustrated Levi behind
"I hate it when he does that."
He followed shortly after, his destination Armin's room. He stepped inside without announcement. The small corporal, grabbed a nearby chair and sat down near the door., His grim dark eyes settled on Armin who was fidgeting underneath his gaze.
"H-hello Corporal..."
"Sup."
A long silence followed.
"So was it worth it?" Levi suddenly asked.
"Was what worth it...Sir?"
"All this. Was it worth saving that blonde haired chick?"
Armin didn't even hesitate. "Yes it was. And I would do it again."
A tiny bit of respect flashed across Levi's eyes, "Oh, we got a bad ass over here. Well I hope you at least got laid for your trouble."
Armin choked, stammered, and blushed, all conviction blundered by his reaction.
Levi decided that he could have fun with this kid.
"So, that blonde chick…, is she a screamer?"
Armin pulled the covers over his head, trapping the heat that rose from his blood and reddened his continued to speak. "Hey, where are you going? I'm not done with you yet kid."
Nile Dawk, Commander of the Military Police hated Erwin Smith. , He made that no secret. In his opinion, the man was a delusional sociopath who did nothing more than throw human lives at titans, hoping for a solution. Yes, he loathed Erwin smith. He loathed the feeling of inferiority that bubbled up inside him every time he was near. He loathed the calm demeanor and the spark in his eye that suggested that no matter how much you knew, Erwin Smith knew more. He detested the man with a passion.
However, he would never admit that he was afraid of him too.
Erwin was cunning, ambitious, and frighteningly intelligent. Yet, he used all that drive to face Titans, the universal source of fear for the human race, he couldn't imagine what a man who faced those monsters everyday was capable of doing.
So when the very same man walked inside his office, Nile could not help but feel slightly apprehensive about whatever was about to occur.
He was well aware that coming to his office in wall Sina must have taken hours on horseback, what possible reason could he have to cross an entire wall in order to speak to him? Nile really hoped that he wasn't about to interfere with the case involving the freed slaves. The absolute shit storm that had started due to today's events had been left for him to deal with. If only Erwin Smith knew what he was really dealing with the moment he'd found that church. He was glad this was now a Military Police matter. He could handle this in a way that would deal as little damage as possible to him and to the people that mattered.
"Erwin." He greeted stiffly, making it clear that his presence was both unpleasant and unwelcome.
Erwin ignored his halfhearted greeting and instead chose to observe his office. It wasn't much. A desk and some paintings- some awards he had earned from his days as a trainee. Nile noticed Erwin's eyes linger on his wine cabinet with a judgmental look.
"Do you need something?" he asked
Erwin folded his hands behind his back, his head held up high. His height only amplified his posturing.
In that moment Nile Dawk felt dread. Erwin looked too confident. Too strong suddenly, as if he had some hidden weapon to turn tides.
He watched as Erwin began to move slowly across the room. His hungry blue eyes taking it in. He stopped by Nile's medals that were hung on the wall. "If I recall correctly, you were number one in the top ten."
Nile really didn't know what his past in the Academy had to do with anything, but he would play along. After all he would always hold at least this one triumph over him.
"Yes I was. I don't recall what place you were..."
"My skills were unfortunately mediocre at best. The top ten was something I could never achieve."
Nile smiled inwardly. He would always try to remind Erwin where they used to stand.
"But being in the top ten does not dictate success. I have done quite well for myself."
Nile resisted the urge to roll his eyes. "Oh, yes you have, Commander Erwin Smith, the leader of the titan chasers. The man who found humanities greatest soldier! The man who exemplifies the bravery of the human race- the great Erwin smith!" Nile mocked.
Erwin put a hand to his chin looking thoughtful, "'Exemplifies the bravery of the human race'? I was not aware that the two remaining walls saw me as something that resembled that. On the contrary if I represented anything it would be the entitlement of the human race."
Nile chuckled crossing his arms and leaning back into his chair, "The entitlement of the human race? What kind of drivel are you spewing now Erwin?"
Erwin faced him, "Why does the human race feel like the titans have stolen from them? Why does a child grow up hating the confines of the walls, when it is all he has ever known? It is his reality, his world. Yet, his instincts tells him that there is more, and that it belongs to him."
Nile stayed quiet, contemplating his fellow Commander's words, "When we crush ants beneath our feet, what drives us to rip their lives away? Is it cruelty? Are we considered evil or morally corrupt for doing so? But yet, we cry and plead, and ask why? When a Titan rips apart a loved one with its jaws. We call it wrong. We mourn and demand answers."
Nile clutched his stomach and howled in laughter "I always knew you were crazy! Ants do not fight back Erwin, they do not mourn their dead."
Nile continued to laugh but stopped when something in Erwin's eyes changed and the Military Police Commander flinched slightly, "Of course because the ants are insignificant. They are weak, numerous, but inferior. In the end I am an insignificance to a titan, a mere afterthought. The actions we take sometimes mirror the titans, and we have to acknowledge that this war may be more about our greed as the human race then a fight for survival."
"Is that what you think, Erwin?"
"Maybe, but what I do know is that we are not entitled to life, to peace, to love. The Titans are proof of that, but yet..."
"We still yearn for it..." Nile finished, now fully aware of what he was trying to say.
"We yearn for it and demand it. Make no mistake Nile, I am not a brave man. In fact, I consider myself a coward in many ways. I am simply the man Humanity chose to take back what once belonged to us. This is my duty."
Nile sighed, "Alright fine, you made your point. Now, are we just going to play philosopher all night or do you plan on telling me why you interrupted me while working a major case?"
"Oh yes, May I?" Erwin gestured to the chair across his desk and Nile nodded. Erwin sat down and wasted no time dropping a few files on his desk. When Nile reached for it, Erwin refused to remove his hand.
"Before you look inside, I want you to explain something to me Nile."
His eyes narrowed and Nile swallowed. "The Military Police are known as the best of the best by the civilian population. However, among the Military Branches there is a general agreement that the Military Police are incompetent and corrupted. I pondered how deep this corruption ran and I think I may have found the answer in the nearly two dozen slaves that Armin Arlert rescued yesterday.
Nile didn't speak, this was the one man who he absolutely never wanted to look in the direction of the inner walls and start digging around.
"I thought to myself, 'surely there would be some kind of ongoing investigation into these missing persons', but to my surprise, there wasn't. Then I thought to myself, out of the millions of people inhabiting the walls, who could possibly afford Human slaves? Who could slavers possibly sell to to make enough profit to continue their lifestyle? Their operation?"
Nile gritted his teeth. Oh, how he hated this man.
Seeming to sense the impatience, Erwin said, "I will get straight to the point. How long has the Military Police been aware of this Human trafficking operation for the residents of Wall Sina?"
The room seemed to shrink, boxing Nile in with Erwin as the question was finally asked. A bead of sweat rolled down his face while Erwin continued to stare into his eyes.
He gulped, "You have no idea what you've done..."
"Oh, I am fully aware of what I have done." Erwin retorted.
"Now here is what you will do. You will not attempt to cover this up, as I assumed you were trying to do. I have already taken measures to insure that it is impossible to do so. You will label this as a major case and begin an investigation. There will be a debriefing in three days. All the commanders will be there, including myself and Pixis, and if I'm guessing correctly, the King himself will possibly make an appearance."
Nile's eyes widened. Erwin was right. If he made this a major investigation and made the information that a slave trading operation was happening, then that meant that this would concern all the walls. The kings' involvement was almost obligatory at that point.
Nile scowled, feeling his resentment rise. "You son of a bitch! You can't do this! You have no idea what you're doing!" He was standing and shouting less than a foot away from Erwin, yet the man didn't bat an eye.
"Are you done? Good, now sit down. Screaming is unbecoming of a man in your position."
Despite himself, Nile sat back down.
"These contain everything you need to know. I want you to share the information with all of the subordinates that you will choose to appear at the debriefing tomorrow- and make sure they are trustworthy and have at least several years of experience."
Nile nodded.
"If you find yourself in a position where you don't know what to say, then you will follow my lead and corroborate whatever details I give you. Understood?"
Nile nodded again.
Their eyes met and they held each others stare for a long while.
Nile looked away first and Erwin stood up.
The very air weighed suddenly with unspoken and unacknowledged tension. Nile didn't dare meet Erwin's eyes again, he couldn't.
"Nile Dawk, Commander of the Military Police. I want you to know this; that you are an ant. Do anything that jeopardizes this, and I will crush you. You may fight but I will prevail under all circumstances. You may struggle and demand freedom from the confines that I now have you in but I will keep you in my grasp until you are no longer necessary. You may shed tears but I will only see them as evidence of the broken man that I have made you into."
Nile clenched his fists, his eye twitching with rage.
"You are insignificant."
Nile stood up, his fists at his side. His entire being screamed at him to beat the man in front of him into a bloody mess and be rid of all his troubles.
"You are weak."
Nile was shaking with a fury he didn't know he was capable of.
"There are many men like you, but ultimately you are inferior."
He could not breathe. He could barely think.
"-And when the day come's for me to bury you underneath my feet, you will be the afterthought left in the ground and the world will call it justice."
Erwin turned and left the room. Each step he took seemed to pound in Nile's ears, before finally the door closed behind him and he was gone.
He was still trembling with rage when he slowly reached out to open the file.
He took a look at it, letting the information sink in.
Nile Dawk screamed and used all his strength and pent up anger to flip his desk, the wooden structure toppling with a loud bang.
When the small blond had fallen asleep, Corporal Levi had decided that now would be the best time to tell his squad about what Armin had done. He had ordered them to assemble in a nearby room and proceeded to explain everything as best he could. He couldn't remember every detail but he got the important parts across.
"So he basically mind-fucked them?" Auruo said.
Beside him, Petra rolled her eyes and frowned "Corporal Levi would never say that."
Eld and Gunther sighed, both of them fully aware that an argument was likely to start any second.
"Actually..." Levi began.
They all turned to face him.
"You know what, never mind."
He sighed. He was getting too old for this.
"Wait, Corporal. Is this information confidential?" Gunther asked.
Levi thought about it for a second. He wasn't stupid. He knew that there was a reason Erwin had ordered him to tell his squad about Armin and what he had done. Though, what for was still a mystery. Erwin had told him to tell his squad, and he had done that- the rest was up to them.
"Do what you will with It." he answered "I've got to go back and keep watch on the kid."
He walked out, leaving his squad behind with their thoughts.
"Hey, we should invite that kid to poker night!" Auruo suggested with a smirk.
Eld and Gunther laughed and found themselves agreeing.
"Man, hope his poker face is as good as his bluffs. I want him to sit by me so he can learn a little something." Eld said.
Gunther elbowed the blond man in the ribs "Are you kidding me? The kid is sitting by me!"
"Absolutely not!"
The three males froze at Petra's voice "He is a little boy that just went through a traumatic ordeal. I am not going to let you three corrupt him with your booze and gambling!"
They protested in harmony, but Petra stood firm.
"No!"
The men pouted petulantly and sat down, while Petra smiled at her victory.
Levi had learned a very long time ago how to keep alert in everyday situations. A childhood living in the underground where crime was an everyday thing and an adulthood spent fighting titans had made him into a very light sleeper.
So when Erwin touched him on the shoulder to wake him from his guard duty, Levi opened his eyes instantly, fully aware as though sleep had never harbored him.
Judging by the rays of sunlight that were shining through the window, he figured that it was already morning.
He stood up and faced his Commander. Erwin was slouching and there were bags under his eyes.
"You look tired." He pointed out.
"I should, I have been awake for at least 36 hours," Erwin replied
"So...I'm guessing you already know what I'm about to ask you?"
Erwin glanced over at Armin's sleeping form before turning back to Levi "You are going to ask me why I had you tell your squad about Armin's actions."
Levi nodded.
"Very well, it was simply a precautionary measure to insure that the Military Police did not cover up what had occurred. The best way was for some information to leak from some credible sources to the general public. And what better sources are there than Humanities strongest soldier and his hand-picked squad."
Levi looked at him skeptically. "Me and my squad are credible sources? You do realize that most of them think we're insane..."
"Yes, a majority of the civilian population often question our sanity, but ultimately they judge us through our actions. Why do you think that despite the less than favorable reputation of the Survey Corps, you are still seen as a shining beacon of hope by everyone?"
"Because they judge us through our actions."
"Exactly. Armin's actions are what we will be commending, not his character. And the people will do the same."
"But there isn't a guarantee that my squad will start spreading the info."
"That is true. Eld, Petra, and Gunther may be reluctant to share something like this without your direct approval, but Auruo on the other-hand..."
Levi felt a tiny bit amused.
Auruo was kind of a loudmouth.
"How long do you think it will take for word to spread?" Levi asked.
"A day, or maybe two at most. I feel confident that in enough time it will be a factor in the debriefing."
"Alright, you should get some sleep. You look like your about to pass out."
"Very well, if you need anything, I will be in my quarters."
Levi watched him leave before sitting back down and returning to guard duty.
Pushups weren't hard. Annie had been doing them all her life. From her training with her father to the regular workouts at the academy. She could do one hundred easily. She never thought in a million years that pushups would be difficult. Somehow Keith Shadis- the sadistic asshole instructor of the Academy- had figured out a way to make it so. He was screaming in her face for each pushup she struggled through. , added on to the fact that he conveniently decided to do this in the pouring rain made it ten times worse. She was shaking with numbing cold and consequently her fingers slipped form. Each sudden face first landing in the sloshing soil only resulted in more screaming.
At least she wasn't the only one, Mikasa was also here, and by her heavy breathing and sweaty pale face, she wasn't faring any better.
Luckily, for now he had decided to focus his attention on Ackerman.
"Is this how far the top trainee in the academy can go!? My mother can do better! That boyfriend of yours, Jaeger, isn't around for you to cling to! Step it up, Ackerman!"
Annie felt a little feeling return to her face as her lips turned at the corner. That was kind of funny.
"And what the hell is so goddamn funny Leondhart?"
Damn it. He noticed.
Shadis stomped over to where she was sending wet mud over her shivering form.
"Laugh it up, Leondhart, because you're a goddamn joke! You've been fucking up all over the place!"
He was just spitting bullshit, she told herself dismissively, she wasn't going to let this get to her.
"There is a broken trainee out there because of your shit!"
Annie growled, but kept her head down so he wouldn't notice.
"If Arlert was here I wonder what he would say."
The sting of the cold faded with the passion of anger swelling in her. 'Don't you dare speak for him.'
"Thanks a lot for screwing up my damn leg!"
Armin would never say something like that. She knew it for a fact, and it still did nothing to calm the almost overwhelming urge to punch the man in his face.
"You've doomed him to a life of scooping up the king's shit cause of your crap!"
She felt something inside her snap. Her chattering teeth clenched hard in and her jaw set painfully. She was seconds away from lunging at the man before a small bit of mud hit her on the side of the face stopping her in her tracks.
She looked to the side and locked gazes with Mikasa.
Annie didn't need her to talk to know what she was saying.
'Calm down.'
Thankfully, Shadis had decided to focus back on Mikasa leaving her time to get her bearings.
After that, she managed to go through her punishment without incident.
Annie and Mikasa stood up. Both tired, wet, and stained with mud as they watched Shadis walk away. Desperate for a bath and some sleep, Annie started to make her way to the trainee quarters.
Mikasa was walking by her side and upon noticing her, Annie gave her a sideways glance through wet fragments of her hair. "Thanks by the way..."
"I'm not doing it again."
"Didn't ask you to do it the first time."
Silence.
"But you're welcome..."
This was so awkward. They were both probably the most socially inflexible people in the academy.
"You've been acting strange lately,"
Really? She hadn't noticed.
"You're really angry, you've been snapping at everyone." Mikasa grabbed her shoulder to make her stop walking. "Is it because Armin's gone?"
"No," she replied.
'Yes.' She thought.
"I like you better now that I know you care." Mikasa said, then her face darkened and her eyebrows lowered over her damp eyelashes. "But stay from Eren..."
Annie shrugged her hand off, "Whatever."
She stepped away, but not before Mikasa told her one more thing.
"You were much better when Armin was around..."
Annie sighed and looked at her filthy hands, studying each grain in the crevices of her skin, "Yeah, I know." she whispered.
And done, hope you guys like it! some Erwin smith this chapter! he plays a big part in this story along with Armin and Annie so expect mind games XD

Seseorang: another favorite T.T, i feel really bad for taking so long! yes my little Armin is a mindfucker to his very core, i can't wait till he realizes it himself more in the manga. and i think the Annie Mikasa fight was everyone's favorite part lol, it certainly was mine! I think fans were hungry for a fight two strong and capable women. and according to you and several others i delivered (thats a relief!). more Aruani moments will be coming but this is a long story so it will take time, so be patient with me =)
rockytaing: Perfect? well thank you ^^. secret book of armin is one of those fics that i hold extremely close to my heart for reasons i don't really wanna divulge, but when i saw that it went for so long without updating i decided that i wanna be like this author who decided that he would put an effort into displaying Armin as the character we all love.
Zara: thanks! making characters as close to Canon as possible is always something i put alot of effort into. im glad im succeeding!
Fuzzy Conchita: haha lol, that pun! yes mr handsome has some..plans, and i believe that Sassy levi is a must in any fic lol. some of the fics out there portray him as way too angsty. butterboy arlert? lol! your killing me XD. i guess i fulfilled all your wants except the updating thing, again sorry about.
Seqka711: haha lol sometimes i am the exact same way, i forget a story and then i check my favorites or my email and go like "What's this" and then an hour later im like "How the hell did forget this amazing thing!" and yeah i got a beta and she is amazing. and im also learning and trying to make fewer grammar mistakes but they almost always happen anyway.

supboyyyyy93: lol i am so sorry, i did the exact opposite!i feel like crap right now.
shingekilover: thanks for the compliment and review, and i will don't worry.
Moochiki: Yeah it was, but sometimes it is necessary as i want to set some things in motion and usually for me if i manage to portray a central theme or message i usually like to end the chapter there. expectations are quite high right now lol and while that makes me happy it is also scary! chapter 10 did not turn out exactly as i wanted it to be for a few reasons but the meat of the story is starting so be ready for it =)
Gyarii: Yeah! and he has done this like 3 times in the show and no one seems to fucking remember!
Brook Uchiha Daughter of Zeus: Yes, i honestly wanted that character to be in pain because believe in consequences for your actions and that scene was really important to me.
pansy25: Yeah, the asshole disrespected the survey Corps so who better fit to teach him a lesson then the ever sassy Levi.
Again i want to give a massive apology to everyone, i hope you guys have not lost faith in me and my ability to write this story!
See you next time.
