Author's Note: Hey guys! Sorry for such a long wait! School is a butt, so I was unable to muster time or muse to write anything decent, but Ymirage managed to get me to write something up before the end of the term. So here is the second instalment of my Fairy Tail fanfiction, hehe! This chaptaer is fluffy, and somewhat clichéd, so be warned. But other than that, sorry about the wait! I'll try to get another update to you soon!
Chapter 2 – Welcome to Fairy Tail
It was the evening of the next day when the two arrived in front of a large building that was located on the coast of Magnolia Town. At first sight it looked like a poor build shack; it was as if amateurs had patched together a building without any true knowledge of a carpenter. But if you were to look closely it was obvious that whoever built it took great pride in their creation. The warm colours of the carefully painted walls and neatly stacked roof tiles made this quite evident to the Dragon Slayer as she followed the wizard through the gates of the property. Above the guildhall's door was a neatly carved sign that read Fairy Tail.
"So, this is your guild hall?" Michiko asked Nebeski curiously.
"Yes. It was made by Master Mavis, herself; with the help of others of course." He answered this in his usual bored tone.
Anxious, Michiko followed the blond-haired wizard inside. It was the complete opposite to what she'd expected. Inside were rows of benches, a bar, and stairs leading to a small room upstairs; though she couldn't quite make out what was inside. As her pure blue eyes scanned her surroundings, she noticed there was also a Request Board next to the bar. It had a good handful of papers pinned to the cork, each of them with a decent amount of writing and pictures.
It's a good thing I can read… Michiko said to herself, relieved.
Nebeski led her to the bar, where a man with dirty blond hair stood, drying glasses that had been washed. When the wizard approached the man, he put down the glass and smiled at the young man.
"Welcome back, Nebeski! I see you completed your special mission for Mavis, too! Nice work."
Nebeski didn't smile back, instead he blinked at the man as though he didn't register what he said, but he replied anyway, "Thank you, Yuriy. And yes, I did. Do you know where she is?"
Yuriy nodded and then pointed to across the room where a young woman and a tall man stood, talking. Michiko stared at the two, curious. Was the young lady Mavis?
She is really pretty…
Then, the two made their way over to the guild master and the man. As they did, Mavis turned to see them and smiled widely, running to them then stopping abruptly when she was in front of them.
"Ahh! You're Michiko! I'm so glad you came! I was worried you weren't going to accept my request!" she stated cheerfully.
Michiko smiled in return, "Well, I kinda needed work, so…"
Mavis giggled…"Well, I'm so happy you've come!" She turned to the man who stood next to her, "Precht, could you go grab the stamp? I think it's in the cupboard upstairs."
Without speaking the man obediently made his way to the staircase.
Mavis then turned to face Nebeski.
"Thank you for getting her, Nebeski. I knew I could count on you. Was she difficult to convince?"
Nebeski shook his head. "Not to worry, Master. She wasn't overly difficult. I did manage to stop her from starting another bar fight." He informed Mavis, staring at Michiko intensely as he announced the last sentence.
Mavis grinned.
"Well, the first thing we need to do is make sure that she doesn't do that again. We don't want to go tainting our name, eh?"
Michiko nodded.
"Sure thing. I assure you I won't do that again." She promised.
As she finished her sentence, Precht returned to the group with a large stamp in his hand. He passed it to Mavis, who held her arms outstretched for the item.
Mavis turned to face Michiko once more.
"I suspect Nebeski has been through the rules and such on your way here?" she asked.
Michiko nodded.
"Wonderful!" Mavis responded, "So! Where would you like your guild mark to be? We accept most body parts, just try not to be… too creative if you know what I mean. You'll have to show it to clients if they request to see it."
Michiko nodded again, "I get you. I.. I suppose my back would be a good choice?" She queried.
Mavis' face lit up, "Ah! That's a wonderful spot!"
She skipped behind Michiko, and then noticed a space in her black, skin-tight top that was designed to expose the top of her back. She lifted up the stamp, but hesitated.
"Oh! What colour would you like?"
Michiko blinked, "Uhhh… Is dark blue and yellow okay?"
"Of course!" Mavis cheered.
Michiko could feel the stamp make contact with her skin as Mavis pressed it between her shoulder blades. It didn't take long for the area to heat up, with a tingling sensation running over the top of her back as the tattoo was created. The sensation soon stopped and the stamp was lifted from her back.
"Do you want to see it?" Mavis offered.
"Sure." replied Michiko.
Mavis led her to a large mirror in a corner of the hall. With her back facing the mirror, Michiko strained her neck around to get a good look at the bold tattoo that stood out against her pale Caucasian skin. Smiling, Michiko turned to Mavis.
"It looks awesome!" She praised.
Mavis grinned with delight at the Dragon Slayer's announcement. Quickly, he small woman grabbed the teenager's hand and, if possible, her grin grew wider. The blonde haired Master turned and then began to drag Michiko towards a door, with a small skip in her gait.
"I need to learn more about you, Michiko! You seem like such an interesting person!" Mavis declared as she pulled the confused Dragon Slayer along.
Michiko looked back at Nebeski, silently begging the mage to tell her what was going on. But the man's gaze followed without emotion, as though he was oblivious to her pleads.
Two hours later, Michiko and Mavis emerged from the room. They both bore solemn looks on their faces, as though whatever they had talked about was not quite pleasant. The guild hall was much busier than it had been two hours previously. Fairy Tail members were sitting at the long rows of benches, laughing, drinking, eating and sharing tales of their previous quests and daily gossip. A small smile could be seen forming onto the Dragon Slayer's face as she approached the bar. Nebeski was sitting on a stood, conversing quite deeply with Yuriy when she approached. The blond-haired mage looked at her and blinked, as though he hadn't expected to see her so soon.
"Did Mavis give you too much trouble?" He asked flatly.
Michiko nodded her head, "No, not at all. We just had to discuss something thing I'd rather not think about, that's all."
Nebeski nodded respectfully before standing up, and nodding a quick goodbye before walking taking a step away from the bar. He looked at Michiko and gave her a small gesture with his small hand to follow. Michiko did so, and he led her to the Request Board. The board now had a couple removed, Michiko suspected that someone had chosen them and had started their way to their client. Nebeski stood at the board and turn to face Michiko, whose eyes stared in wonder at the different kinds of jobs that were available.
"This is the Request Board. Every time we get a job request Master Mavis pins it up on this, and it is open for anyone who thinks they have the skill and right talents to pull it off and please the client." He explained.
He turned to face the board again and then spoke again.
"Is there any here that strike your fancy?"
Michiko studied each request carefully. They all seemed interesting. They all had a good reward in Jewels so none of them would leave her more worse off than the others. As she studied the sheets of paper, she noticed there was a smaller piece of paper half covered by a bigger one. She reached up and moved the larger sheet to the side to see what it was.
Pest Removal
"Help me remove a couple of pests from my yard."
Reward: 22,000J
Client details on the back.
The paper was quite tattered, as though it had been through quite a bit before getting to this cork board. Michiko narrowed her eyes at it before pulling it down and handing it to Nebeski, who had been quickly talking to a young boy with blond hair. When the boy ran back to a crowd of teenagers, Nebeski looked at the chosen quest and blinked. He shifted his blue and yellow gaze up to Michiko.
"Not this one." He demanded.
Michiko's mind was flooded with confusion. "What? Why? They just want some pests gone, is it really that much of a difficult ask?" She questioned.
Nebeski sighed.
"A few members have attempted that quest in the past. They have all returned battered and bruised." He stated simply.
The Dragon Slayer's eyes narrowed at the mage.
"Well, I'm going to remove this request from Fairy Tail's board once and for all. You can't stop me, either." She declared before snatching the request paper out of his hands and turning around and storming towards the Guild Hall doors.
She hadn't moved far when Nebeski called out to her.
"Wait! I'll come with you!" He called.
Michiko stopped and turned to look at him, an expression of disbelief, and a little bit of anger, in her eyes. It didn't take long for Nebeski to reach her and then place a hand on her bare shoulder.
"Another thing you should know about accepting quests," he started, "is that you must let the Master know that you have accepted it, so that the client can be notified before you arrive."
Michiko nodded, and jogged towards Mavis. The green eyed woman grinned at the sight of her newest member.
"Hey, Master. I.. just wanted to let you know that Nebeski and I are taking on this quest, here."
Michiko showed the small Master the sheet of paper. Mavis nodded.
"I'd expected you would pick out that one! Go ahead, Michiko! I have faith that you will have the strength to complete what others have not. Good luck! I'll let the client know!"
Smiling, Michiko turned to Nebeski, who had a triumphant gleam in his emotionless eyes.
As the two partners made their first step out of the guild hall together, Michiko stopped.
"What's wrong?" Nebeski asked.
Her eyes closed, and her face tilted down, Michiko took in a deep breath. "Nothing… Nothing to worry about, really. This is just… one of the best things to happen to me for a while, y'know?" She said calmly.
Nebeski nodded. "Yeah, this will be quite the memorable quest, being your first and all. Let's make it a success, eh?"
Michiko opened her eyes again, and tilted her head to face the sun up ahead.
"Yeah."
