Chapter 10: The First Wedding
It was Friday. It was September. University had already started classes for Haruhi and myself. It was my wedding day. I was marrying Haruhi Fujioka, my high school crush, my best friends ex-girlfriend. My bride was pregnant… with my best friends child, and now my father knew it wasn't mine. Those were the things I knew. Those were the things that had me pacing the chapel as I waited for the wedding to start.
**FLASHBACK**
"eh-em!" I heard my father cough from the doorway. "Kyouya, my son, my wonderful, smart, charming son… what does Ms. Haruhi mean by tell me the truth?"
I put Haruhi down and froze. What was I going to say? "I… Um…"
"Kyouya. What. Does. She. Mean?" his voice was steady and stern.
"Sir…" Haruhi tried to speak up but was cut off by my father.
"I didn't ask you!" He snapped at her turning back to me. "What aren't you telling me, Kyouya?!" He crossed the room and in no time was standing in front of me, just inches from my face.
I gulped and breathing heavy I said the only thing that came to my mind, "I'm a virgin."
He backed away from me and stared long at hard. I felt like I was in the investigation room and the silence was deafening. Finally, after a few minutes, the longest minutes of my life, he slapped me across the face. It wasn't the first time it had happen, probably not the last either, and like the first time Haruhi witnessed it my glasses flew off my face. I closed my eyes in pain before straightening back up and looked at the fuzzy version of him in front of me.
"That child is a Suoh." He stated with flared nostrils. "That child is a Suoh and you're claiming it as an Ootori… Why?" I could almost see his anger emanate from him.
"I care about Haruhi, I always have and I always will. I will not let her go through this alone," I stated trying to keep an sign of pain off my face and out of my voice.
"Sir… I asked him not to. I told him he didn't have to. I told him not to ruin his life for my mistake." Haruhi said speaking up for the first time.
"Then why did you let him?" Father said turning to her now. I watched as she straighten up and went after him with not a sign of fear in her eyes.
"I didn't 'let' him. He promised ME that he would help! HE promised ME he would always be around! HE promised ME that I would never be alone! HE told my father it was HIS child! I was the one that told him NOT TOO! YOU were the one that told ME I was going to marry him! YOU FORCED the wedding. HE was the one that made sure I was happy! HE wanted to do this and I LOVE him everyday for it! I didn't let him! I told him NO! YOU'RE the one FORCING us to marry! I just find nothing wrong with marrying the man I LOVE!" She poked her finger at him with every pronoun and with every sentence her volume increased. If I had found her scary before I knew she was truly the Shadow Queen now.
My father, who had not moved while she had yelled, nodded and turned to me. "You're a braver man than I, Kyouya. If I hadn't planned for you two to marry child or no child I would disown you for this…. For your own good I hope the kid looks like her." And with that he left the room.
**END FLASHBACK**
"Kyo-chan" Honey-sempi said to me from the door way of the small room I was waiting in. "Haruhi wants to talk to you."
Puzzled, I asked "How?" This marriage already had so many complications I didn't want to jinx anything by seeing her in her dress.
"She's on the other side of the door," he said sadly and walked out.
"Haruhi?" I asked as I walked over to the door holding it ajar.
"Kyouya,… I can't do this…" I heard her say barely louder than a whisper.
"If you don't want to…" I trailed off, hoping that she still did. As much as the kid would ruin me, I loved her and wanted to marry her anyway.
"No… no I just… I can't do this without trying to tell Tamaki about the baby… You understand?"
Tamaki! Of course… we never did try to tell him. I didn't exactly have a number for him though, that might be why we never tried. "How? He didn't exactly leave a calling number."
"I… I had Mori-sempi do some research after the proposal… He found a number to call and gave it to me today…"
My heart sank… what would he say? Was I going to lose Haruhi? Was he still going to get the girl after everything? "… You should call him"
There was silence on the other side of the door. "I don't want to do this alone, Kyouya..." she paused again. "Will you… will you help me? I'll put it on speaker, we can do this now and then… then we'll get married. I just…. I have to tell him Kyouya, I have to!"
A sad smile creped onto my face, I guess I'll still get my girl but first I have to talk to him. "I'll always be here with you Haruhi. Go ahead and call him, you wont be alone."
I heard her sigh and then type the phone number in. The phone started to ring and after four rings a lady answered. "Bonjour!"
"Bonjour Mama, is Tamaki Suoh there? This is Kyouya Ootori" I asked in French. Though it was not my favorite language I had been around Tamaki enough to know the basics.
"Oui, un moment!" the line started to play a piano solo as we were put on hold.
"Well… we have to right number." I told Haruhi, how I wished I could see her, hold her. I reached my hand around the door and felt her grab it squeezing tight.
"I'm afraid" I heard her whisper.
"It'll be okay…" I told her though I wasn't really sure it would be.
After what felt like a year of listening to that piano music he picked up the phone. As soon as I heard his voice all of the anger I had for him over the last three months came back to me. It took everything I had to keep my voice level and calm.
"Kyouya! Oh I knew you would be the first one to find my number! I'm surprised it took you this long! Oh I've had a wonderful time getting to know mother and Uni here is just amazing! How is Haruhi? And everyone else? Are they mad at me? I bet they are… I bet you are… OH but I just had to leave! I had to meet her Kyouya! I had too!"
"Tamaki… Haruhi's here with me" It was the only thing I could think to say. If I kept it short it would be over sooner.
"Haruhi… oh please don't giver her the phone…" there was silence and after a few seconds Haruhi finally spoke up.
"Tamaki-sempi… you're on speaker," she said softly, the way one speaks to a child that has made a mistake. I smirked at her use of sempi. She hasn't used sempi on me for months.
"Haruhi…" Tamaki whispered. "I am so sorry I left like that. I didn't know how else to tell you. Especially with the baby…"
The baby? The baby! "You knew!" I shouted from my side of the door. "You knew and you left anyway! You left her alone with no way of contacting her and you fucking knew!" If he was there in person I would have killed him, I would have beaten him to a bloody mess myself.
"I … I … um…"
"Tamaki… how?" Haruhi said. I could hear her on the verge of tears. I couldn't take it anymore I took my glasses off putting them in my pocket, closed my eyes and opened the door. I didn't even have to look, she fell into my spread open arms. And I hugged her to me for dear life.
"I… I saw the positive pregnancy test in the bath room the night we watched the movie…" That didn't sound right, Haruhi said she didn't know for another two weeks, the day she found his note.
"That was my first test Tamaki, the first one is usually wrong. I took two more after that, that were negative…" And that clears that up. "I wasn't necessarily pregnant, you had no right to assume and even if it was true, which, by the way it is, you should have stayed. Why didn't you stay?!" Anger was starting to enter her voice on the last sentence. I was still hugging her to me and her body was starting to shake.
"Haruhi… I'm sorry. I can't be a father right now! Why didn't you just get an abortion? I figured when I left you would."
"I would never," was all she said. It was all she had to say.
"Tamaki, this is your mistake and like usual you ran away. You destroyed her life and mine because you are a coward. You are not my friend and I am ashamed I ever called you my best friend. I hope you enjoy your life Tamaki, but if you excuse us, we have a wedding to attend." I heard Haruhi end the call and squeezed her in my arms.
"He knew, Kyouya… he knew… and he left!... I loved him!... I loved him so much!... Kyouya I hate him!... I never want to see him again!" Haruhi said between sobs as her whole body shook. I kissed the top of her head and rubbed her back; I had no words for her, no advice, all I had was comforting hug.
Minutes passed with us like this, me holding her as she cried. All I could think about was how that coward had just left when he knew. The first thing I did was tell her I would always be there for her and it wasn't even mine. He ran away. He ran away from her, from me, from his child, from everything. The bastard, that self bastard, I would find a way to ruin his life.
"Haruhi, Kyouya?" It was Honey-sempi that showed up first.
"Kyouya? What's going on? You're not suppose to see her just yet!" Kaoru said next.
I let go of Haruhi and said "I haven't opened my eyes, don't worry I haven't seen the dress."
"We called Tamaki," I hear Haruhi whisper.
"What did that bastard say?" I could hear Hikaru grinding his teeth as he asked.
I kept my face neutral opening my eyes in here direction, though they were blurry blobs. "He knew about the baby."
"HE KNEW!" all three of them screamed. I could see Haruhi nod her head out of the corner of my eye. I could see that they were about to explode like they had when they first found out but Haruhi raised her hand before they could.
"We can talk later. Right now I would like to marry the man I love," she said and then she grabbed me by my tie and kissed me. It was a hard kiss, and a wet one from the tears but it was a kiss and she had said she loved me and that was all I needed.
I pulled back form the kiss and turned to the two red headed blobs in my sight, "Help Haruhi finish getting ready boys. We have a wedding to get to!"
