When she and Ino finally got back to the office, Temari was holding one bag of purchased items while Ino touted four bags in all. The other blonde hadn't found a dress to wear to Hinata's wedding, but she had found a bunch of other things she wanted instead. And somehow, Temari wasn't really surprised at that turn of events.
"Did you find your dress?" Shikamaru asked when the two of them barged into his office. Or more specifically, Ino barged into Shikamaru's office and Temari trailed behind her, watching the interaction of her genius boss and his childhood friend with tense amounts of trepidation and dread.
"Nope! But I found something super cute to wear to Hinata's bachelorette party," Ino said, smiling widely. She rustled around in one of her bags before pulling out a rather racy black top. The neckline was low-cut, and the back of the shirt was basically non-existent. Shikamaru's eyes narrowed when he saw it.
"Where do you have to go in order to wear something as ridiculous as that?" Shikamaru griped. Ino pouted at him, sticking out her tongue in rebellion.
"You sound like my dad," she teased, smirking when his frown deepened. "We're going clubbing, obviously. I know you didn't get the memo, but people our age tend to like going clubbing." She stuffed the top back into the bag and then turned to smile at Temari. "Temari's going to come with us!" The comment made Temari blush in embarrassment, holding onto the one shopping bag she carried. Ino had dragged her to a bunch of different shops and forced her into a multitude of clothes. Within the larger shopping bag she held was a smaller bag. It also contained a rather risqué top that she was instructed by Ino to wear to the bachelorette party.
"You're corrupting my secretary?" Shikamaru drawled. Ino's head whipped around to glare at him. They argued back and forth for a while, Ino getting progressively more worked up as they went on. It was probably because Shikamaru was unfazed by Ino's yelling, which in turn made her angrier. While they argued, Shikamaru stood up and walked around his desk, leaning against the front of it puffing on a cigarette.
"You're such an old man!" Ino said, walking forward and swiping the cigarette out of his mouth. Temari expected Ino to grind it in the ashtray on Shikamaru's desk, but she didn't. Instead, she placed it between her lips and took a long drag.
"Oi. Those are bad for you," Shikamaru said. He snatched them out of her fingers as she blew the smoke in his face. Ino grinned saucily at him despite his unfazed expression. He ignored her triumphant expression and looked over at Temari. "I finished most of your filing, so you can clock out for the rest of the day," he said. Temari looked at him in surprise. She hadn't expected to be dismissed so early. Ino laughed at her surprised reaction.
"Don't worry; Shikamaru's competent when he wants to be." The genius glared at her for that, but Ino ignored him and continued smiling sunnily at Temari. "I'm having lunch with Hinata tomorrow. You should join us!" she said. The offer made Temari smile. Even though it was painful, Temari had to admit that falling in love with Ino was really easy. She could see now why Shikamaru had.
"Sure, that sounds fine." She bid them good bye before reaching to shut the door behind her. Before it clicked closed, she saw Shikamaru's arm wrapping around Ino's waist, and Ino's fingers sneakily stealing Shikamaru's cigarette again. And Temari wondered if Shikamaru's kisses tasted like cigarettes.
