Chapter 3: Rin Kagamine
"O-Onii-san?"
Kaito looked up once he finished taking his shoes off to see his little sister looking at him with wide, innocent eyes, her small head tilted to the right ever so slightly in curiosity. "Why didn't big brother pick us up today?"
A small smile formed on his lips as he ruffled the little girl's hair and answered, "I got in a bit of trouble at school, so I had to stay there today for a bit longer." He straightened himself up and looked around the living room. "Where are- OW! WHAT THE-?! MMPH...!"
A snicker could be heard as Kaito turned around to glare at the culprit that had hit him. Or, to be more precise, pranked him. "Big brother isn't so smart, huh?"
The blue-haired boy crossed his arms over his chest as he (desperately) tried to NOT hold on to the attacked area. "I thought you said you debugged all the floorboards-"
"You thought," the younger sibling responded, her tone playful so she could spur his brother into annoyance, "but I lied~"
Kaito gave out an annoyed 'tsk' but said nothing else to the youngest of the pair of twins. He walked into the living room and began to look around for the missing twin. "Kageito? Are you here?" He straightened his back from looking under the coffee table and put both of his fists on his hips. "Please come out. I'm not in the mood for playing hide-and-seek with you, Kage."
There was no answer.
The boy was just about ready to shout, but thankfully, the youngest in the family stopped him from doing so by tugging on his school shirt. "Onii-san, Kageito ran off to hide in his room once we came home."
"She's right," Kaito turned towards his blonde sister, who was now casually sitting on the couch while flipping through channels on the TV, "the little scaredy-cat ran up there once we got here."
"Why? What did you do, Kikaiko?"
Kikaiko raised her hands up in annoyance as she said, "Why do you always blame me when he goes missing? Goddamn, I swear, I didn't do anything!"
Kaito muttered a small apology, but kept his suspicions. After all, Kikaiko was Kageito's twin, so she must now something... "Since you don't seem to know anything, why don't you go upstairs and bring him up."
The question was more of a command than a request, but even so, Kikaiko pouted and started to complain, "Oh heeeeell naw!" She flailed her arms around in an over-exaggerated matter and continued with her oncoming rant, "That kid's like a freaking chameleon. He probably walked down the stairs and is in this room right now, watching from the shadows like the stalker he is...!"
"I prefer the term 'observer', dear twin sister."
Everybody but Kaito, who only sighed, jumped when a black and white figure emerged from behind the couch. Kageito ignored the kind-of rude reaction and looked at his brother with a small smile. "What are we having for dinner?"
"I've got no idea," he said, proceeding in turning around so he could head towards the kitchen. Once he got there, he washed his hands on the sink while he looked up through the window-less hole in the wall in front of him. "How does some simple onigiri sound?"
"Onigiri sounds good, big brother."
"Mmm! I could use some nice onigiri right now!"
"Onii-san's cooking is the best. I don't really mind what we have..."
Kaito smiled at the responses and continued in making onigiri for his brother and sisters.
"Hey! Kaito! You got mail!"
Kaito looked up from fumbling with his school tie and asked, "Junk mail or bills?"
"Neither," Kikaiko walked up to him, her school uniform smooth and crisp, unlike her brother's at the moment, "it's actually a letter."
At this, Kaito raised an eyebrow but didn't question her. He simply took the letter from his sister's hands, the tie now forgotten and dangling from his neck. He muttered something under his breath when he read whom the letter was from and hesitantly began to open it. He quickly scanned it and frowned when he got to the last sentence.
"Well?" Kikaiko asked, her arms crossed over her chest. "Who's it from?" She then took notice of her brother's upset, if not angry, expression and let her arms drop from her chest and next to her sides. "Don't tell me it was from-"
"It doesn't matter," Kaito threw the letter to the floor, his hands reaching up to continue in fixing his tie, "she says the usual. Nothing important."
"So she's not coming back-"
"She says the usual," Kaito repeated, his voice now bitter, and he felt his entire morning, possibly his entire day, had been ruined by the dreaded letter.
Nothing else was exchanged between the two siblings as Kaito helped Kageito and Kaiko with their school uniforms.
Rin Kagamine let her eyes wander off when her father began flirting with her classmates again. It was annoying, to say the least, so while he was busy being...himself, the blonde took the opportunity to look for someone to talk to. Len was currently getting an earful from the crazy man, so he was out of the question... That left... No one. Everyone else was nothing but a stranger to her. Except...
Happy that she now had something to take her attention, she hastily ripped a piece of paper from her notebook and began scribbling on it. After she was done, she crumpled it up and flicked it towards a certain blue-head's direction, hoping that her unimpressive aim wouldn't mess this up...
... It hit the boy right below the neck, and all she could do was watch as the crumpled-up thing rolled into his uniform sweater and down his back. She sighed and continued in making another one. Once she was done, she closed one eye and tried carefully to at least aim at his head. Sneaking a glance at Leon for reassurance, she looked at Kaito straight at the back of his head and, after a bit of hesitation, threw the thing into the air.
The throw wasn't the most perfect thing in the world, but it accomplished the goal of getting his attention. The piece of notebook paper made it safely over the teen's head and onto his desk, causing him to look down at the thing in mild surprise. A bit hesitantly, he smoothed out the paper and read the neat handwriting inside.
Nothing to do, so wanna chat? My dad's such a bore...
Kaito turned the small piece over and wrote his reply, "Sure, why not. Why's your dad so...y'know...anyway?" Satisfied, he crumpled the paper back up and threw it over at Rin's direction with precision, and allowed a small, victorious smile to grace his lips when he saw he made it at his intended target.
The piece landed between the blonde's cerulean eyes, causing her to blink in surprise before sending a glare over at the blue-head's direction. Shion only shrugged and resumed to pay attention to the bickering blondes in the front, but it wasn't long before Rin's answer hit him in the head again.
Jerk, was that necessary? Oh, and why should I tell you? It doesn't concern you, New One.
By now, the piece of paper was full, so Kaito decided to rip out his own piece and write down his response. He threw it back at Rin, and the duo kept on as their conversation went like as follows:
Just curious. You don't seem to have the best father-daughter relationship in the world.
So what if we don't? And stop talking about my dad, let's talk about something else. ANYTHING.
Touchy subject much? Fine. How's your day been?
What a basic question. Ugh, waking up to my father never starts a great day, so what do you think? How's your siblings?
Kaito's eyes immediately widened. How could she have known that type of information? He never mentioned his siblings to anyone. Unless...
Did Len tell you I have siblings? There can't be no other explanation...
He could see Rin smirk from the corner of his eye, but he decided it was best to not dwell on it. The response he got, though, made him even more curious about the whole thing.
For your sake, even though I usually wouldn't care, I'll say he did. Also heard he got you into detention a few days back. Had fun with Al's fury? Aha...
The blue-haired boy was about to write that no, the hour and a half of silence was torture, when Leon suddenly decided to point him out. "Shion, mind sharing with the class what it is your conversing about?"
Not again... "Small, meaningless topics. Nothing particularly important..."
Leon looked at him with suspicion. "Ah-huh, and who exactly are you sharing notes with? Don't think I haven't noticed the pieces of paper flying across my room."
Busted. "W-Well, um-"
"He was talking to me."
Kaito looked at the blonde with a bit of surprise as she continued, "I got bored of you arguing with my best friend, so I decided to start a conversation with one of my other...friends." He didn't know if he should feel happy or offended by how she described their relationship. "Have a problem with that?"
For once, Leon seemed to be at a loss for words as his mouth hung open. His eyes were the very description of sadness, but they morphed into angry slits as he glared daggers into Kaito's skull. "Yes, I have a HUGE problem with that. Don't talk to my daughter in such a casual manner, Shion-"
"Dad, stop it! I'm sixteen, almost seventeen! You need to stop treating me like a child!"
"No matter how old you are, you'll always be my little baby. You can't talk to boys so easily, Rin, not everyone's so trustworthy!"
"You need to get over yourself! What happened happened and there's no changing it! I accepted it, now why won't you?!"
"It's not something I can so easily get over! You were so little, and... And..."
Leon was looked as if he was on the borderline of breaking down, but Rin payed no heed to it. "Y'know what? I'm not having this stupid discussion with you! We're done, so just go back to teaching, Leon."
The blonde man let a shocked, nearly heartbroken gasp escaped his lips. He looked at his daughter with a an odd mix of uncertainty, disbelief and dejection before turning his back towards his students.
"Turn your books to page ninety-seven."
"Oh, Rin-chan, I heard about your argument with-"
Len held a hand up to stop Gakupo from continuing. "Don't start with that. Trust me, that's the absolute last thing she wants to talk about."
It was now lunch time, and Kaito found himself sitting with the mysterious quartet yet again as he watched Rin poke at her food on his left. It was hard to admit to himself, but seeing her so angry and downcast for the first time made him worry. He was kind of reminded of his sister, Kikaiko, and how she went into a bit of a depression upon entering middle school...
"Is my sadness contagious or something? What are you frowning about, Shion?"
Kaito snapped out of his thoughts and turned to face Rin. "N-Nothing, I was just reminded of something..."
The blonde girl scowled but didn't comment on it and kept on picking at her food. Strangely enough to the blue-haired boy, though, Len began mirroring her actions as he, too, played around with his mashed potatoes.
They weren't kidding when they said these two were practical twins...
The thought caused Kaito to laugh, earning him good glares from the two blondes as they simultaneously said, "What are you laughing about?"
Luka and Gakupo joined Kaito on his laughing. They were so busy giggling that they didn't even notice the reassuring smiles the two 'twins' gave each other before even they merged their laughs in as well.
The group spent the rest of their lunch time talking about small topics concerning the school, and once he left, Kaito felt as if the four weren't such strangers anymore. Sure, he still had a lot to learn, but at least they were a bit closer...
"So you had a little bonding experience with them, huh?"
The blue-head would've jumped a bit, but he managed to keep himself calm as he turned to see the one person he hadn't seen in days. "Miku, you should really stop creeping up on me. And how did you know that? Did you spy on us?"
"I don't need to spy," she said, her fingers tightening their hold on her books, "all I have to do is look into those blue eyes of yours. You're a very open book, Shion-san."
Kaito didn't understand how she could possibly read into his thoughts like that, but it was something he would have to ask about later on. "I'm pretty sure you don't know everything about-"
"If I remember correctly, you have younger siblings to look after, yeah? Two sisters and one brother under the care of one teenage boy who doesn't seem to have neither a job nor the will to-"
"Shut up!" It took a lot to get Kaito angry, and this was one of those few things. He turned around to face the tealette head on as he continued, "My siblings don't concern you."
Miku's eyes widened at his sudden outburst as she bit her lip in regret. "I-I'm sorry, it just kind of escaped from me..."
The pigtailed girl stared silently as Kaito muttered some incomprehensible curses under his breath. Once he was done, he lifted his head up and gripped onto the strap of his backpack. "I get the feeling that my siblings aren't the reason you decided to confront me today."
"A-Ah, yes," Miku nodded as she brought her books up towards her chest as some kind of reassurance. "I have a bit of advice for you, and I dearly hope you follow it or it will be the end of you, Shion-san."
A bit reluctantly, Kaito nodded for the petite girl to continue. Miku gave a small nod back and opened her lips to speak her suggestion, but was interrupted by a certain blonde.
"New One! What're you doing standing around here for? You've got club activities!"
Kaito looked at Rin with a furrowed eyebrow. "Club activities? I don't remember signing for any-"
"Nonsense, it's practically mandatory that everyone joins a club! I'll just have to show you around." The bow-wearing girl finally made it up towards the duo, glaring at Miku's direction as she did so. "C'mon, idiot, we don't have all day!"
The pigtailed girl waved shyly with one hand at Rin as a greeting. "Hello, Kagamine-san."
The blonde paid no mind to the girl as she took Kaito's wrist. "Do I have to force you over there?"
"W-Wait, Miku was about to-"
"There's no time, now let's go!"
"But my siblings-"
"Len's on it, now stop complaining!"
Kaito didn't exactly trust Len with his siblings, but what could he do? With a sigh, he allowed himself to be dragged by the surprisingly strong blonde as they checked out the school's clubs.
Meanwhile, Miku shook her head at the sudden occurrence and turned to head straight home, all the while looking up towards the sky in thought.
He's got it, Mikuo. What do I do?
