"What do you mean your leaving?!"Ed heard Roy yell from upstairs.
"I mean I'm leaving!"Riza's angry voice came.
"Why?"Roy said angry "What the hell did I do to you?!".
"If you don't know, I'm not telling you!"She snapped.
Footsteps were heard on the stairs accompanied by the thump of a suitcase.
"Riza!"Roy was heard coming down the stairs after her.
"I'm sorry Roy!"Riza sounded close to tears "I can't do this anymore! We need to take a break.".
"I'm sorry."Roy said quietly after a minute "I promise I won't keep secrets from you again.".
"You broke a promise Roy!"Riza cried "You said you'd protect him! Do you want him to end up like the Elric's?!".
"Don't do this Riza."Roy said "Don't leave. I promise I'll do better.".
"Like you promised last time?!"She said, angry again.
There was a pause followed by the door slamming.
"Riza wait!"Roy said.
It was to late. The door slammed again. After it had slammed twice more, Ed woke in his bed in a cold sweat.
"Just a dream..."He thought to himself.
Although he knew it wasn't. It had been four years sense he had visited Edward Elric's grave with Elisya. Everything had continued normally for a few years. That was until Ed had turned eight. Riza and Roy begun to have problems. This lead to Riza moving back into her dorm in the soldiers quarters at central. This had happened about a year ago. Now, Ed spent most of his time at Riza's apartment and only one or two days a week at Roy's. His alarm clock went off and he rolled out of bed and began to get ready for school. He was in fourth grade now and his hair had grown the slightest bit longer. He pulled on his blue pants and black shirt. His jacket came down to his waist and was the color of the military uniforms with similar silver lines running down the edges and around the collar.
"Ed sweetie!"A female voice came from the other room "You'll be late!".
"Coming mother!"He excited his room.
Silence was observed in the kitchen until Ed picked up his school bag. A book fell out. Before he could pick it up, Riza had reached down to grab it. She frowned when she saw the title.
"Ed I know why your studying alchemy but,-"She said.
"I'll find it. For Elisya."He said.
"Just don't neglect her. If you fail, don't regret it."Riza said.
"I won't fail."Ed took the book back "And I will always be there for her.".
He turned to leave.
"Your staying at your fathers tonight."She said.
He nodded and left without another glance at her. Riza sighed. She loved her son but, he was like his father. Once a friend was in trouble, he would do anything to help them. Ed continued down the sidewalk thinking when the sound of footsteps came from behind him. He looked behind him and scrambled to get out of the way as Elisya threw herself at him and hugged him.
"Take it easy Elisya!"Ed pulled his friend around to face him and smiled.
"I'm ok Ed!"She said "It's not a big deal. Come on we're going to be late.!".
She pulled him down the road and to school. The morning was uneventful except for Ed getting yelled at a few times because he kept reading alchemy books.
"Honestly Edward, don't you ever run out of alchemy books?"The teacher asked after she had reprimanded him.
"I'm re-reading them because I didn't understand them very well when I was five."He thought.
Outwardly, he remained silent. Soon the day had ended and Ed was walking Elisya home. Her orangish hair had grown out and she wore it in two long pigtails. She walked by him and he found himself staring at her in the dimmed sunlight.
"What?"She asked.
He shook his head.
"Nothing."He said.
"Ed?"She asked "Can I tell you something?".
He nodded.
"Your my best friend. Will you stay with me until the end?".
Ed smiled.
"I'll always stay by you. There won't be an end.".
Elisya pecked him on the cheek making him blush. She smiled and raced inside her house. Ed continued down the street. He needed to think.
"Non of the books mention the stone so where can I find it? Do I have to make it?"He thought to himself.
It was this question he pondered over until he looked up. He hadn't realized he had walked into the cemetery. This hill looked familiar. As soon as he turned around, he fond why. There sat Edward Elric's grave, lit up as bright as ever. He sighed. Maybe he would make this his new thinking spot. He really liked the atmosphere. He sat down to ponder by the tree and it wasn't long before he fell asleep. When he woke up again, he realized something was wrong. The world seemed frozen in time as he stood. He froze. A boy stood facing the gravestone. Ed gasped as he turned toward him, pleading in his eyes.
"Your that boy from four years ago."Ed spoke quietly.
The boy nodded and approached him. Ed backed into the tree. The boy reached out and took his hand in his own, opened it and placed a small pebble in it. He closed Ed's hand around the pebble and backed away.
"Find them please?"He spoke "For Al?".
"Ed?!"A voice called as the dream faded "Ed?!".
Ed woke to see his father standing over him, shaking his shoulders. His look of panic gave way to relief as his son woke. He let him go and stood up.
"What are you doing here?"He asked him.
"Thinking."Ed responded "What are you doing here?".
Roy looked surprised for a second but then recovered.
"Visiting.".
Silence.
"Let's go home.".
Ed nodded and stood up. He felt something in his hand and opened it to find a small black pebble with white lines on it. The same pebble the boy had just handed him in his dream. He closed his hand around it and decided. He would come back tomorrow to investigate further. This was getting too weird. At home, Ed entered his room and sat on his bed. He studied the stone. The white lines formed some kind of symbol. Tracing the stone with his finger, he came to a realization. His eyes grew wide as he stared at the rock in shock.
"There's a transmutation circle drawn on it!".
He raced to his book shelf and tore a book from it. Flipping the pages, he stopped and glanced from the stone to the image on the page. The circles were the same.
"No!"He thought "Who would do that?! That's a soul binding circle.".
He replaced the book on the shelf and went to set on his bed and ponder this fact.
"If his soul is bound to this pebble, why would he give it to me?"He asked.
"Ed you have school tomorrow!"Roy called up the stairs.
"OK."He responded.
He placed the pebble in a small pouch and set it on his night stand. The lights went out and before long, he was asleep.
The next day Ed woke early and dressed for school once again. He left the house without saying goodbye. He couldn't. His father had to go in early that morning and had already left. Dawn was just breaking when he stepped out to begin his walk to school. Elisya jumped him on the way to school again. He mumbled a hello which made her frown.
"Ed? What's wrong?"She asked.
"Nothing."He smiled.
"Your not mad at me?!"She started to cry.
Ed threw his hands up.
"No! No! Please don't cry!"He said.
She smiled, leaned over and pecked him on the cheek. He blushed scarlet as she took off toward the school. He took off after her. By lunchtime, the teacher was baffled. Ed always had an alchemy book in hand but, today he seemed lost in though concerning another matter. After school, he met up with Elisya to walk her home. He didn't say a word.
"Seriously?"She said "What's bothering you?".
"Don't worry about it."He smiled.
"You know you can tell me anything."She said.
"I know. I'm not going to worry you though.".
"Your worrying me right now."Elisya said.
"It's nothing."He said.
"Edward Alexander Mustang!"Elisya snapped "Are you going to do something dangerous?!".
"No."He hugged her "Don't worry. I've just been thinking about things.".
"OK."She commend down.
He let her go so she could enter her house. She sighed and walked inside. Ed continued down the road, doubled back and ran for the cemetery. He raced up the hill and stopped in front of the grave. Quickly, he took out the pebble and looked around.
"Where are you?"He whispered to nothing.
No answer. He sighed and walked over to observe the stone.
"How would this pebble be connected to him?"He pondered.
The sunlight glinted off a small seam in the top of the stone he hadn't noticed before. Slowly, he pried at it with his finger nails until it slid out. A small circular hole had been carved in the stone. He didn't know why he knew this but, he knew the pebble had to go in the crevice. He sat it there. It looked so small compared to the hole, which was about as big as his hand. Nothing happened. The stone sat there as it had sat in his room. He reached down to pick it up but, as soon as his fingers touched it, it glowed. He withdrew his hand quickly, knocking the stone off the grave. A searing pain ripped through his shoulder and then everything went black.
