Chapter 4: Coming Home
"OH MY GOSH! RIIIIIIIN!" SeeU yells from the top of her lungs as she heads towards her sister's bedroom. When she makes it there, she all but rips the door off its hinges and stomps inside in an annoyed manner. Rin, whom had been calmly reading a magazine beforehand, jolted up with a high 'eek' in complete surprise.
"What's wrong?" She immediately questions when she sees her older sis make quite some noise from inside the closet. Wait a minute... "What are you doing?"
"Fashion emergency, Rin! I DESPERATELY need your- Ah, here they are!" SeeU vaguely responds from inside the way-too-big-to-be closet. "Girl, have I ever told you of how I just ADORE your slouch boots? They're gorgeous!"
Rin sighs as she swings her legs over the side of the bed. "You're obsessing over the black ones, yes?"
"Yeah! Y'know, the ones with the cute belt on the bottom?"
"Oh, those." The younger replies before laying her back down on the soft mattress. "What do you want my boots for anyway? Don't you have your own?"
"Riiiiiin~ I'm not a supermodel like you are, so I don't get boots as nice as yours!" An annoyed 'hmph' follows after as SeeU pouts childishly. She chose to ignore the 'but you can afford them anyway' that came out of her sister's mouth and stepped out of the closet with Rin's slouch boots in tow. "Whatever, I'll see you later." Upon noticing her sister's more or less lazy position on the bed, a frown appears on her face as she begins to scold her. "Aren't you gonna get dressed?"
The smaller blonde arches a brow. "Why? I'm free today, so I don't really care."
"And did it ever cross your mind as to why you're so strangely and suddenly free?"
"No..." Now this was starting to get a bit weird. "Why, is today a special day?"
"DUH!" SeeU explodes, succeeding in startling Rin once again. "What's today?"
"... Thursday?" Rin tries, only to have SeeU jump onto the bed and land on top of her back, causing some pain on Rin's part.
"NO! YOHIO COMES OUT FROM COLLEGE TODAY!"
The room is bathed in complete silence afterwards as Rin tried to let the words sink in. Yohio was coming out of college... Oh. Oooh. Yohio was coming out of college. Which meant...
"OH GOSH!" Rin shrieked as it finally dawned on her. She jumped up and down in excitement (causing SeeU to slide down towards the floor) before she eventually calmed herself down. "I thought he was coming back in, like, three months!"
"That stupid-head decided it would be a good idea to surprise us!" SeeU yells back as she gets up from the furry carpet covering the floor. She dusts off her skirt before turning around and heading towards the door. "Thanks for the boots!"
Rin doesn't even register her sister leaving thanks to all the giddiness building up inside of her. It had been nearly a year since she had last seen her elder brother in person, and gosh, she missed him so much! Out of all her siblings (excluding Rinto, but only because he was more of a built-in best friend), Yohio is surely her favorite. He was a kind man that treated everyone gently and with patience. When it came down to it, he could also be ridiculously silly and incredibly charming. Yohio also cared deeply for those closest to him, and if he ever saw a dimmed face, he would make it his duty to brighten it up. Rin was incredibly shocked to learn he was still single (in accordance to the media); she would've thought a girl had come by and claim him by now! Disappointing, to say the least, but it didn't really matter.
A sudden ding reverberated from her pocket, and Rin took out her smartphone to see she had gotten a message from Yohio titled 'Hey baby bunny'. With a smile, she opened up her inbox and tapped on the most recent one. It read as follows:
From: Big Brother Yohio(:
Subject: Hey baby bunny :D
Sent: THURS 4/24/14 2:47 PM
Hey baby bunny! :D
I'm sure that as I'm writing this e-mail, SeeU or, idk, Lui or Rinto maybe? Anyway, I'm guessing you've been told I'm coming home. Well, I am! :D I graduated, Rin! Too bad they make our graduations private, it's kind of a bummer you and the fam couldn't be there! Dx Mom did make it though, so it was still special. Anyway, I can't wait to see you! I probably would've sent this as a text message, but my phone's dead and currently charging, so this was the next best thing! I mean, do you know how much drama would erupt had I sent it via social messaging? x) In any case, I feel excited to be able to see my bros and sisters again~ College was nice and all, but I missed you a lot. It gets kinda lonely without you guys, y'know? So I'm supposed to board a plane at 3, so expect me in about half an hour or so! I'll be looking for you all once I get out and into the airport! My bunny have better be there, or I'll be disappointed... :c
Rin giggles at the short message and puts her phone back in her pocket, completely missing the post script she might've seen had she scrolled down a bit more.
P.S. I'm bringing someone very special to me along with. You've been ranting about it, so here it is. See ya later! ;)
Len drums his fingers on the surface of the armrest next to him to serve as a distraction. The afternoon in which he should've been greeting his sister back from nearly a year of zero contact decided to screw it and send him a text message instead. "I hopped on the wrong plane," his sister had said. "Whoops." Followed by, quite annoyingly, a laughing emoji.
A freaking laughing emoji.
He rolled his eyes at the memory and decided to take out his phone. Piko was the last person to be taking out his phone during lessons, so... Maybe Rin? At the thought of her, Len suddenly found himself thinking about what she was doing. Could she be having crazy times with her family? Who knows. Should he even text her? She gave him her number for that exact reason, but what if she was busy at the moment? ... Why are these stupid thoughts going through him right now anyway? Usually he would just go ahead and do it, regardless of the receiver's schedule.
Deciding to just damn it all, Len puts his thumbs over the touch keyboard and begins typing. "Hey. I'm at the airport waiting for my sis, so I'm pretty bored. Are you busy?" And... Send.
To his surprise, he didn't have to wait long for a reply. "Hey, what a coincidence! I'm at an airport too! Pretty weird, yeah? xD I'm waiting for my big bro! He's taking forever though. :c"
Len never really was one for emojis, but seeing Rin use them was kinda... No. There's no need to stray to such weird thoughts. Shaking his head for good measure, Len sends another message. "Yeah, it is weird. Never thought you'd be doing the same thing as me..."
"It's kinda funny. cx So how's it going with you anyway? You better not be failing school!"
"What are you, my dad? I may or may not be failing a couple subjects here and there... Maybe."
":o Oh, you're such a bad boy! xp"
"Shut up, I am trying, I'll have you know!"
"'I'll have you know'? Guess you aren't a bad boy after all. Oops. :/ xD"
"Whatever. As if I care about what you think, Ms. Mega-Star-Supermodel."
"Whatever to you too, Mr. I'm-so-good-I'm-bad."
"Nice comeback. Not. Anyway, how's your career been?"
"The press are restless. Do they even sleep? I always imagined them as people who train themselves to sleep with their eyes open, tbh. They'd look like this at night: o.o XD But seriously, the press are restless."
"Must be hard. Not~"
"Hey! Take it from someone with personal experience. One time, I even caught a group of them camping outside our mansion. Like, literal WTF. It scared me for days. Don't tell anyone though. cx"
Just when Len was going to reply back with a nice laugh and a response to the 'promise', his phone decided to die on him. He should really keep better track of his battery drainage... With a shrug, Len looks around the airport for anything that could keep his attention if even for a couple seconds. He spots a magazine rack not too far off, but should he seriously? It looked like those teen magazines girls at his school liked to talk and gush over. But there was literally nothing else for him to do! Ah, damn...
Len reaches over towards the rack and takes an issue as fast as he possibly could. The front cover was a bit too colorful (as expected of a teen magazine), with the word 'Utaite' in average handwriting on the very top. The cover was a picture of... Oh. Len's eyes widen once he realizes what it is the main article's about, and he, quite reluctantly, turns to the indicated page. "#Rinkuo still going strong? A date with the power-couple!" The title itself was enough for a swirl of bad to settle on his stomach. Was he getting a stomachache? Yeah, that was probably it. He hadn't eaten breakfast, so that was all it could be, right? Right.
"Our team has tagged along with the much-loved celebrities and uncovered that, despite all the obstacles that come with fame in the way, the two's love is still going strong! Wonderful news, right? Rin is one lucky gal! Mikuo's like her much-deserved Romeo, don't you think? His words were proof of that! When we asked them if their relationship still rang true, this is what the hottie had to say! "As long as I get to see her and love her for the day, I'm happy for the rest of the month." Isn't it adorable?"
The rest pretty much covered their entire date, which kind of unsettled Len because dates were supposed to be a bit more private. Looks like Rin wasn't kidding when she said the press was restless...
"At this point, the two had left the restaurant. We followed them at the ready in case the date had yet to close, which was definitely the case! Turns out Mikuo's more of a romantic than we give him credit for! I mean, how many girls can say that their boyfriend had literally whisked them away to a fairytale with a, and get ready, horse-drawn carriage? Yes, you read right! Way to go, Hatsune! Doesn't this give him more points in the hearts of teen girls?"
Reading the article and looking at the pictures, Len could only conclude that Rin was incredibly...happy with Mikuo. And the photo in where she was leaning on him inside the carriage with a serene expression was more than enough to prove it... Len keeps on staring at all the photos for a little while longer before he turns the page and tries to concentrate on the next article. Don't get too into it, Len. Don't get too into it...
"Len!" He hears his father call, causing him to put the magazine back in its proper place. "Your sister should be here now. Let's go greet her."
"Finally!" Len excitedly answers back, his mind now completely blank of the article he had read and filled with thoughts of his older sister. "I'll have to get her for stupidly getting on the wrong plane. How could that even happen anyway?"
Mr. Kagamine lets out a little laugh, but otherwise provides no reaction as he waits for his daughter, Lily, to appear in person after so long.
Rinto puts his hand on top of his twin's head with a bit more pressure than necessary. "Can you please calm down? We're all excited, but seriously, you look like you're on a sugar high or something!"
Mikuo, whom had gotten an invitation from his girl to come with (much to Rinto's dismay), let out a loud laugh. "Let her be. It's kinda cute, don't you think?"
The older twin frowns and crosses his arms over his chest but doesn't say anything to Mikuo as he glances over at Rin. "Tell me again why you invited him. It's still not sinking in."
Rin inwardly groans, for the reason why only lets the nervousness she doesn't want creep on her. "Yohio wanted to meet him in person."
"Hopefully he gets the same vibe I'm getting about this dude." Was the only answer Rinto gave before he paid full attention to his phone. Rin had always wondered who the heck it was he was always texting, but it wasn't her place to ask. It was his love life after all, but she couldn't help but worry after the fiasco that happened a couple years ago. Never before had she seen her twin/best friend as heartbroken as he had been that day...
It doesn't help her to stray towards such thoughts. This in mind, she immediately turns to think about Yohio. She found it odd at first that he wanted his university life to be as secret as it could possibly be, but she could understand why. University was filled with so many experiences and firsts that the press would've probably bad-mouthed him for everything. That would also be the reason why high school wasn't an option for her and her siblings. Life would be so much easier without people feeling the need to know what celebs are doing every second of the day...
"HEY GUYS!"
Rin snaps her head up to see Yohio running towards the family. She doesn't even register the boy clutching his hand as she shots up and practically flies towards her big brother. "Yohio!"
Yohio laughs amusingly before he lets go of the other young man and envelops Rin in a warm hug. "Hey, honey bunny! I missed you, kiddo."
"I missed you too," Rin mutters and is nearly lost in her brother's loving grip when suddenly the whole family envelops Yohio into a huge hug. The Hibikis share a small laugh together before they eventually let go, some more reluctant than others.
Afterwards, Yohio moves on to greet each sibling properly. "Rinto, you look the same as always! No girl yet?"
Rinto answers no, but the small blush on his face was enough to betray him and say he was thinking of one. Yohio chuckles, makes a mental note to bug him about it later, and turns towards SeeU with a bit of a frown. "You're pretty pushy, y'know? It's the middle of my ceremony and suddenly I get a text saying you want me home immediately. You do know my phone ended up ringing on stage while I was getting my diploma, right?"
SeeU nervously laughs but says nothing as she inches closer towards Rinto. The oldest Hibiki shakes his head and smiles at the next one. He keeps going until he lands on Rin, who eagerly clutches Mikuo's hand. "So, tell me about him."
Rin takes a small breath in, but before she could say anything, Mikuo takes a step forward with his left hand outstretched. "It's nice to meet you. My name is Mikuo Hatsune, and I'm Rin's boyfriend."
Yohio smiles slightly and shakes the boy's hand. "My name is Yohio Hibiki, and I'm Rin's big bro!" He lets go of Mikuo's hand and gives out a small chuckle. "Also, there's no need to be so formal. You're totally okay."
Mikuo grins and takes a step back to Rin's side, the latter with a pretty shocked expression on her face. "R-Really?"
She watches with hidden surprise as Yohio nods his head and explains, "Let's just say I've been paying close attention to the media." He winks and, before Rin could even understand his statement, he pushes a blonde boy forward while letting an arm rest on the newcomer's shoulder. "Anyway, you know that special someone I was talking about? Well, here he is! Introduce yourself, Ollie~"
The young man, "Ollie", flushes in embarrassment as he stammers out, "Y-Yea, my name is Oliver Edwards. It's very nice to meet all of you... Uh..." He looks at everyone with a dazed expression before he shakes his head and bows slightly in respect. "I-I'm sorry! I just wasn't expecting for Yohio to have this many brothers and sisters..."
Yuu, the second youngest of the siblings, laughs and accidentally elbows Rinto in the stomach, which earns him an annoyed look from the latter. "You're not the only one!"
Rinto nods in agreement and looks at Oliver directly. "Most people who haven't met us all in the same room react the same. It's overwhelming."
"Hey, you're not from Japan, are you?" SeeU bluntly asks with a grin. "I can hear the accent but can't place it."
Oliver slowly shakes his head with a smile. "No, I'm not from here. I'm actually from Manchester, England. My family moved here because of my father's job transfer."
As the rest of the siblings brought up their own questions, Rin kept on staring at the boy's face. Well, to be more exact, her eyes seemed to be focused on the fact that Oliver's right eye was covered with a white medical eyepatch. What could have happened to his right eye? Was it... Was it missing? Was it madly injured? Was that area of skin burnt? All these questions swirled around Rin's head like a hurricane, and it amazed her even more that her siblings seemed to have not noticed. That or they did notice and were thinking the same thing with a facade of politeness on the outside. She trusted the latter as the case as she steps out to finally greet this Oliver Edwards personally. "Hello, my name is Rin Hibiki."
The Brit smiles warmly at Rin, not completely unaware of the thoughts circling trough her head. "It's very nice too finally meet you! Yohio talks about you an awful lot, so I was quite excited to meet the famous sister."
"Really?" was the only thing Rin could mutter out at the moment. She'll just have to push rude thoughts of the eyepatch aside and hope Yohio gives an explanation later on. If there's anything her mother has drilled into her head growing up, it was 'don't judge a book by its cover'. Oliver seemed like a sweet boy, and the only thing she could see in his amber...eye was genuine warmth. Maybe she'll even grow to be so used of the eyepatch that it didn't faze her in the slightest. Maybe. For now, she just had to learn.
Speaking of learning, Oliver was happy to see all of Yohio's tales rang true. Rin seemed nice enough, and who knows? Maybe they'll even end up being friends. It would be nice to have someone other than Yohio to keep him company for once. Sure, most of the other university students acted nice towards him, but he could see it in their eyes. That small glint of uncertainty and fear. He could see it in Rin, too, but he hoped dearly that it would soon grow to fade. That went for most of the other siblings as well. They regarded him with a friendly manner, but it was clear that some of them thought his eyepatch strange. With hope, they'll warm up.
"Hey," Yohio calls out as he surprises Oliver by draping an arm over his shoulders. "I hope you guys are getting along."
Surprisingly, Rin and Oliver both nod simultaneously. "Yeah."
Yohio grins in pure joy, causing small smiles to appear in both of his most favorite people in the world. "Awesome! How about we head on home, yeah? I'm exhausted."
"You sure don't look exhausted," Rin remarks as she playfully pokes Yohio's cheek. "If anything, you look ready to go home and play around some more."
"And who could blame me? I missed you all!"
Rin giggles and Oliver's smile widens. They were all definitely ready to come home.
Teto muses over her recent issue of Utaite magazine with a grin. Defoko, the Utaite editor, watches her with an unreadable expression as her boss finishes off reading and exclaims, "This has got to be the best article I've ever dug up, don't you think? We even beat Vocalia when it came to deadlines! Haha!"
Defoko nods in agreement. "Yes, it's a pretty successful entry."
Teto smiles brightly and was about to go off in a rant on how much Vocalia sucks when a message from the receptionist in the lobby rang through. "Ms. Kasane, someone's in the lobby that wishes to see you."
The head's smile drops as she scans the schedule she had out for today. No important appointments came up, especially at this hour. So who the hell...? "May I have this person's name?"
"It's Mrs. Kamui from Vocalia magazine, miss."
Holy crap! Teto internally screams as she shots up from her seat. Defoko remains unfazed as her boss hides the latest issue in one of her desk drawers and pats her clothes to smooth out any unprofessional wrinkles. With a clear of her throat, Teto calmly asks for the receptionist to bring her up. The lady agrees and, in less than five minutes, Luka Kamui elegantly walks inside the room with all the class she possessed.
"What's the meaning of this?" Luka calmly asks as she sits down in front of Teto's desk with grace.
"What ever are you talking about?" Teto asks back as she puts on the best innocent facade she could muster. Honestly, the lady in front of her brought puke up into her throat. How dare she come in as if she owned the place? The thought only makes her anger grow, but Teto refuses to let it show.
In turn, Luka also tries to bubble down her anger as she gently placed two magazines down on the desk. "Dose this ring a bell?"
Teto doesn't let the issues face her as she screwed her innocent act and glared Luka down. "Listen honey, there's no reason for you to be pissed off over this. All I did was find out the facts and investigate. Is that suddenly illegal?"
Luka frowns at Teto's language. She can cuss at her all she wants, but Luka will keep calm and act like a proper lady. "But it can't just be a coincidence that you release this certain article," Mrs. Kamui turns towards a bookmarked page on one of the magazines without looking away from Teto's eyes, "five days after we release this article." She does the same towards the second issue, and the way she handles it as if she rehearsed the action beforehand irks Teto to no end.
"No, it can't be coincidence," Teto agrees, and just when Luka felt this meeting was going in her direction, Kasane kept going. "It's just a matter of which production team is more hardworking. And clearly," the Utaite head closes the Vocalia magazine with a proud grin, "we kicked your ass."
Mrs. Kamui scrunched up her nose in clear annoyance before taking her magazine back with a 'humph'. "Honestly Teto, this is serious. If you want to prove to me that you're worthy of a competition then don't go around stuffing your nose into my magazines for sources."
Teto looks at Luka as if she's grown another head for just a fraction of a second before a small chuckle comes out of her lips. Luka's look of confusion only manages to fuel her amusement as her giggles grow to full blown-out laughter. Even Defoko, whom had been watching in complete silence, raises a brow at Teto's antics.
"Y-You really think...!" Teto gasps out in between roars of laughter. "'Competition' she says! Ahahaha! Oh God, haha! I can't breathe...!"
After a few more minutes, Kasane manages to calm herself down, much to Luka's relief. She knew Teto was insane, but now... "Just what was so funny, Kasane? I demand an explanation!"
"It's quite simple," Teto answers as she tries to make herself as professional as possible. "I think you're stupid."
At Luka's gasp of pure shock, Teto stood up and crossed her arms over her chest. "You think you're so high and mighty that I need to 'prove' myself to you. Thus, I call bullshit on your earlier statement."
"Now, Teto-"
"Also, I believe I've proven myself a worthy competitor the minute you stepped fresh into the press. I am a force to be reckoned with, Ms. I'm-the-queen-and-those-beneath-me-should-kiss-my-ass." Teto finishes off with an aggravated huff of air as she glares down on Luka. The latter has a volcano within her that was well and ready to erupt, but she refused to stoop to Kasane's level. Instead, she merely muttered out a 'good day' and left with the same grace she had when she entered. Kasane will surely pay...
The moment the doors closed, Teto let out a small yell and sat back down with more attitude than necessary. "That materialistic bitch! Agh, she pisses me off more than her husband does!"
To relieve her from her stress, she began throwing small objects at the opposite wall. Defoko had her back to said wall, so to avoid getting hit, she dodged every single object that came her way in such expertise that it seemed as if she went through this daily. Once Teto could feel her nerves settling down, she sank deeper into her chair and started to massage her temples. The situation was just so utterly stupid; Utaite is a company of nearly ten years of age, while Vocalia just barely started out last year. To think that the Kamui family had the nerve of challenging her! Ooh, it just made her so mad!
Ugh, there's no use in staying angry like this. If she wants to play like that, then so be it! "Defoko, go inform Ted! We have a new issue to send out in a week!"
A.N./ Teto's starting to become my favorite character, to be honest. I'm gonna have a lot of fun with her in the future! cx Also, it may seem like it, but this won't become YohioxOliver. It could be onesided (if that's what you guys want!) but overall, it would be more of a brotherly relationship. I'm thinking of making it YohioxMaika. What do you guys think? As I'm sure you've noticed, I didn't include bandages into Oliver's description because this is the 21st century and people are rarely seen with bandages in public. People don't exactly wear eyepatches either, but I wanted to keep in something to cover the eye instead of giving him a glass eye, y'know? Also, this chapter was pretty long! I was expecting this to be at least 3k but it ended up being 1.5k words longer! :D Hope you enjoyed!
Treble and Bass: Thanks! I do try to include as much description as I can so the story doesn't appear too short or rushed. Kagamine fluff will follow on soon!
violetmistress: Ha, so am I! That's why I had more fun than I should've writing it. Maybe I should just write a Rinkuo one-shot? cx
Sorrow. Pain. Regret: (Had to include spaces because FF wouldn't take it otherwise. :/) I'm glad you're enjoying the story so much! :D I hope this chapter was enjoyable as well. Trust me, I intend on finishing this one.
Lolly1o1: xD Dont worry, Kagamine fluff will follow soon enough!
