"Ed. Hey wake up!"
"Five more minutes mom!"The preteen mumbled and rolled over again.
Edward stood over him, impatiently tapping his shoulder. He sighed in frustration.
"Ed wake up!"He shook him.
"I'm up! I'm up!"He sat up and looked sleepily around.
"Good morning!"Edward smiled.
Ed looked at him for a moment then at his clock. Then he looked back at Edward.
"It's Saturday."
Edward nodded eagerly. Ed sighed at his ghostly twin and shook his head.
"Never mind. Let's go pack."
He climbed out of bed and walked over to his dresser to get dressed. He selected a pair of blue pants and a orange shirt. Edward stood to the side with a look of worry on his face.
"Are you leaving today?"
"Tomorrow. Today-"He turned to him "We gather information on any stone sightings and you teach me more alchemy."
"It takes more than a day to learn alchemy. Maybe we should leave in a couple years?"
Ed glared at him.
"Who knows how long it will take to find the stone! Elisya could be dead by then! Let's get some provisions stored so we can leave early tomorrow."Ed stomped halfheartedly toward the stairs.
"I'm sorry!"Edward followed him.
"She doesn't have long left and I need your help to find the stone quickly. After that..."He looked at him "I will help you find all of your soul stones even if it takes the rest of my life."
"Okay."Edward said quietly.
Ed tiptoed into the kitchen and opened the cupboard. There was a small loaf of bread, a few noodle cups that Roy had stolen from work, and some apples. He bagged said items and turned to the opposite shelf to grab a canteen. Once he filled it with water, he bagged it and crept back upstairs. The food was added to some books and a couple pairs of cloths in the small suitcase. That done, he turned to Edward. Silence.
"So…."
"What do you know about transmutation circles?"
"What kind of transmutation circle?"Ed asked.
"A human transmutation circle."
"Isn't that illegal?"
"Is it?"Edward asked.
"I think so. How is the stone connected to those circles?"
Edward paused a moment then shrugged. Ed jumped up from his bed in exasperation, causing Edward to step back.
"Then why did you bring it up?!"He said.
"Ed?"Roy cracked the door open.
The young boy jumped and turned to face his father's concerned look with a nervous smile. He was sure his face was red from embarrassment.
"What do you want for breakfast?"Roy broke the momentary silence.
"A-Anything's fine dad. Try your best."
"I'm not that bad a cook son."Roy smirked in amusement.
He closed the door and headed down the hall to begin cooking. Ed sighed in relief and turned back to Edward but he had disappeared. The smell of crisp toast filled the air as Ed made his way down the hall and into the kitchen. Roy joined him at the table with a cup of coffee.
"Who's that?"Edward whispered.
Ed jumped in fright and turned to see the ghost kneeling next to him and pointing at Roy. Said man was now looking at his son in confusion and concern.
"Ed?"
"I'm fine."He waved it off and sent a glare at Edward.
Roy continued to stare a moment before his eyes met the clock on the wall behind Ed. His eyes widened in fear and shock before he jumped up and scrambled around the kitchen.
"Shit! I'm late! Your mother is going to kill me!"He grabbed his keys and gloves then paused at the door.
He waved at his son then left in a rush. Ed continued to eat his breakfast, calmly and quietly. Edward took a seat across from him and studied the room.
"Roy Mustang, my father."
"What?"
"You asked who he was earlier."
"That was your dad? You said he's an alchemist, right?"
"The flame alchemist. He was your boss when you were-"Ed cut himself off unsure if this was a sensitive subject.
Edward looked down and picked at the corner of the table.
"When I was alive? It's okay to say it."He smiled, although it was strained.
"Hey."Ed stood to clear his dishes "We'll find your soul stones and help Al heal. We leave tonight."
"Your alchemy lesson-"
"I've been studying sense I was four. We need to leave tonight because I found a lead on the stone."Ed started to leave the room "We need to go to Resembol to find someone who used to know you. Some of your old Alchemy books may be there too."
"How are you going to get the money to travel?"
"I have enough to get there and we can figure it out from there. Elisya isn't getting any better."Ed's mind was made up.
Within ten minutes, Ed was walking down the sidewalk toward the central train station. He had dressed in blue pants and an orange shirt. Edward followed after, nervous. It was not unusual for a child to be out at this hour to walk to school so he was not questioned. He had almost arrived at the corner to cross to the station when he was called out to.
"Edward! Hey Ed!"The blonde preteen turned to see a strawberry blonde haired girl running up to him. His whole plan crumbled right then and there.
"E-Elysia! What are you doing here?"He felt his face turn red.
"Where are you going? School's that way."She asked with a worried look on her face.
"I was going to see if my father was at the station."He lied "He said something about being there this morning and he left this at home."
He held up the suitcase. She frowned at him.
"Why are you lying? I saw your dad go into the main headquarters ten minutes ago."She said "Don't you trust me?"
"I do. I don't want to worry you."He confessed "I'll be at school in a little while. I just have to do something first."He hated lying again but he knew she would tell.
She looked at him uncertain.
"Promise me that whatever your doing you will be careful?"
"I promise."He smiled "And you be careful too."
"I can walk to school safely!"She cracked a smile.
He smiled back and waved as she ran off.
"See you later!"
"Take care Elysia."He said.
She disappeared. Edward turned to him in confusion as they entered the station.
"Why did you lie?"
"I don't want to worry her."He mumbled cheeks still flushed.
"You seem to like her a lot."
Ed turned even redder. He couldn't deny it. They were doing this for her after all. He walked up to the ticket counter and put the money on the table.
"One ticket to Resembol please."He stated.
The women looked over the counter at him in slight amusement but she counted out the money anyway. Having the right amount, she gave him his change and a ticket.
"How old are you sweetie?"She inquired.
"I'm small for my age. I'm seventeen."He fibbed.
He forced down the guilt and put on a serious expression. After a long and awkward moment, she let him go. Ed inwardly sighed in relief as he boarded the train. He had to stop lying so much… Soon the engine began to chug slowly out of the station. The young boy looked out the window at the buildings as they slowly went by faster and faster. Every familiar thing soon disappeared. There was no turning back now.
"Are you sure you want to do this."Edward asked from next to him.
He gave a slight nod that only the ghost boy saw.
"I will save her."He looked at the bright country land out the window as it flew by.
They were off to Resembol.
