Luck of the Unwanted~

Chapter 18

I looked out into a black plane. No matter which direction I turned, I saw nothingness. Is that possible? I look down and see myself but everything else is lined in darkness. I hear sounds but I can't make them out. I hear them emitting from all around me. Where am I? I can hear people talking and they sound so close yet…. far away? The voices are getting closer but my eyes feel so heavy. I hear breathing and whispering. What is this place?

As I made a fail attempt to open my eyes, something shook. It was like an electric current went throughout my body. I felt lighter and tried to open my eyes again. To my surprise, it worked this time.

I opened my eyes and looked out to the clear blue sky. The birds were soaring and the clouds were floating. It was peaceful. I couldn't hear anything other than the wind blowing and the insects calling. I was on the school roof and from here I could see a majority of Magnolia, and it was beautiful. The only thing that really bothered me at the moment was the feeling of someone's gaze on me. I looked over to my side and saw Natsu's face inches from mine.

When he noticed I was awake, he leaned back a bit so I could sit up. When I did though, the feeling of warmth retreated and was gone. What had I been lying on? I looked to the side and the warmth that had left had now returned somewhere else: my face.

Natsu laughed at my expression and I found myself pouting at that. He smiled after that and the mood relaxed again after that. Well almost. I still couldn't figure out why I had been in Natsu's lap but I figured I would enjoy this a bit before questioning. That was until Natsu stood up, stretched, and ran a hand through his already messy locks of pink hair.

I looked beside me and yet again saw that my whiteboard was waiting there respectively. It's funny how much everyone takes care of this thing for me. I always somehow wake up with it beside me like it is following me.

I grabbed a hold of it and gripped the marker as my hand started to move on reflex and spelled out the words quickly across the page. I held the board up just high enough for Natsu to read it. When he turned around he looked at me before going on to the board.

'What happened?'

"Well…. What do you last remember?" Natsu asked coming closer to me and taking a seat beside me leaning against the wall.

'I remember starting the race and the rest is a bit blurry.'

"Well after that, you collapsed and Coach Laxus asked me to take you to the nurses' office."

'So why aren't we there?'

"As often as you get hurt, you always end up waking up to the white ceiling or bright lights. Wasn't it nice to wake up to the blue sky for once?" Natsu asked pointing out to the sky. He had a point. But then again, I have one last question.

'So why was I in your lap?' I wrote a bit shaky at the thought of how close Natsu and I were. He looked up and thought before looking back towards me and answering.

"Well, you fell and hit your head pretty hard on the track. I didn't want you to have to lie on the cold, hard concrete." Natsu said matter-of-factly. The warmth started to slowly creep up on my face yet again.

I still can't seem to figure him out. I can't ever tell what he is thinking. In the beginning, he didn't want a thing to do with me, then he acts like he cares, makes a complete 360, and finally starts to act concerned. What goes through his head?

Natsu POV

That was close. I can't believe I almost kissed her just then. What came over me? She is my adopted sister whether I like it or not. You can't be going around kissing your sister even if you have been through a lot with said person.

I sat up a little to give Lucy some room to sit up as well. I stood up and stretched enjoying the freeness my legs now had. Lucy had been out for a few hours and school was already let out. The sun was going to be setting soon. She sat in silence before looking to her left and seeing that I had brought her whiteboard for when she woke up. Grabbing her marker, she began to write at almost superhuman speeds.

She asked me a bunch of questions and in the end, she blushed, much to my amusement. I couldn't help but almost laugh as she wrote her very last question down. Her hand writing wasn't as neat as previously, and she seemed to be getting a darker shade of red by the second.

'So why was I in your lap?'

The question kind of stunned me. Why did I put her in my lap? I could have used my school bag or something as a pillow, so why did I choose to lay her head in my lap? My mind raced for an answer before a thought finally popped into my head.

"Well, you fell and hit your head pretty hard on the track. I didn't want you to have to lie on the cold, hard concrete." I replied, proud of my accomplishment at hiding my real intentions. I still don't understand what happened but at least Lucy bought it. She looked a bit… relieved?

"Anyway, we better get going. It will start to get dark soon." I said standing up and offering her a hand.

She just sat there.

I shook my hand in front of her face but she just gripped her marker and started to write yet again.

'How long was I out?'

I thought about the question. We had gym together 6th period so about five hours maybe?

"Around five or six hours I think." I said as she took my hand and stood.

'I was out that long?'

"Yep."

We were silent after that, making our way down the stairs and out the front doors of the school. There were a few stragglers so I guess that was why they hadn't locked the doors of the school.

We walked in silence for a bit. It didn't seem to mind Lucy, but I was starting to get a little restless and had to fight the urge to try to make conversation. Especially since it would be hard for Lucy to both walk and write and me to walk and read.

But I couldn't.

"Lucy?" I don't know why I asked that. She can't reply. Yet. I don't care what the doctor thinks, I will make sure she gets to listen to her voice again.

In the corner of my eye, I saw Lucy look in my direction, acknowledging that she was listening to what I was saying.

"You need to be more careful. You are like a magnet that attracts injuries. Every time I turn around, something bad has happened and in return you got hurt because of it. You need to stop being so reckless Lucy. I don't want you to get hurt. Whether I act like it or not, you are one of my best friends and I can't afford for you to get hurt. You got out of the hospital yesterday. You shouldn't be pushing yourself so hard for something so stupid." I explained to her, not even bothering to look her way. I was so embarrassed. Here goes the last bit of pride I have.

"Your legs gave out on you because they couldn't handle the strain you were putting on them. You weren't physically prepared for something like that. You were knocked out for three days due to trauma, and you got up and pushed your body passed the limits. It isn't healthy." I finished as we were now reaching the door to the house. Once we got to the steps, Lucy turned and looked my way, a kind smile on her face. She shoved her board towards my face and I read the note on it.

When did she-

'Thank you.'

"For what?"

'Caring. I haven't really had parents to tell when to not do something.'

Ahhh so that was what it was.

Abruptly, the door swung open revealing a flour covered Wendy in the doorway with an apron on and batter on her face. What was she doing?

We walked in the door and Lucy looked like she was about to have a heart-attack.

Lucy POV

Wendy snatched the door open and was standing there still in her school uniform with an apron on, flour covering her from head to toe, and even some batter on her face to almost perfect the look.

"I am so sorry to ask this of you guys, but mom will be here soon and I seriously need your help." She said walking onto the porch in her socks, grabbing Natsu and I by the hand, and dragging us into the house.

When we finally got the kitchen, I almost died.

The cabinet had been knocked over and there were cans, boxes, and bags of almost everything you can think of sprawled onto the floor. Not to mention a full bag of flour was spread around the room as well.

"Wendy, what the hell happened?" Natsu asked enraged.

"W-w-well… you see.."

"Spit it out Wendy."

"I was going to make some biscuits so you guys could have something to eat when you got home. I got the biscuit mix and flour along with the other ingredients and made the batter and put them in the oven. As I was putting the flour back up, I stumped my toe on the counter and grabbed onto the cabinet for support, dropping the flour in the process. Not only that but then the cabinet started to wobble and almost fell on top of me. I am so sorry for asking this of you, but I really need your help cleaning this before mom gets home." Wendy begged as she bowed. I couldn't help but notice a smirk tainting Natsu's face.

"And what will I get out of this?" Natsu asked as I smacked his arm. It wasn't hard enough to hurt, but he definitely felt it. In return he yelped and grabbed his arm in response allowing a smile to grace my features.

'Just help the poor girl.'

"Hai hai." Natsu said sitting the cabinet and sitting it back up before grabbing a broom, as I grabbed a few cans off of the floor. Wendy looked at us almost disbelievingly, as if she couldn't believe we were helping her. She bowed once again and started to help me collect the cans and boxes.

It didn't take us long to finish the job, and the kitchen looked great in the end. Only when we heard Grandine pulling in the driveway did we all start to freak out.

"Ok calm down. If she walks in and sees us all in here, she will get suspicious and will question us. Wendy here, being the innocent, perfect child she is, will end up pouring out everything, and there is a chance we will all get grounded." Natsu explained as we huddled together like football players.

"Oh come on Natsu, it isn't my fault! Since when is it such a crime to be good?!" Wendy exclaimed. Looks like I won't really have much say in this conversation….

"Whatever. We are going to go in the living room, turn on the tv, and act like nothing happened. Got it?" Natsu asked and we all nodded our heads.

"One. Two. Three. TEAM!" and with that, we scattered towards the living room.

"Wait!" I turned back and look only to see Natsu going back into the kitchen. Out of habit, I followed him, much to his notice.

He reached into another cabinet and grabbed a bag of pretzels. He grabbed about two and crumbled them up in his hand before letting them fall onto the countertop. I inwardly flinched at the action after all of the hard work.

"It is too clean. She would definitely notice it more if it was clean rather than dirty. This is the best way to ensure our secret."

I guess that makes sense. But we are running out of time.

I looked at Natsu panic written on my face and we sprinted threw the dining room and into the living room just as the door opened.

Grandine opened the door and smiled at the three of us before looking up at the tv to see what we were watching. When she saw, her face scrunched up in curiosity.

"Why are you guys watching something on dams?" She asked making her way into the house with a few groceries for supper I'm assuming.

"Oh you know…. Hydroelectric power is pretty important." Natsu said nervously.

"Ok…." Grandine said as she wandered off into the kitchen.

Once Grandine got out of earshot, Natsu looked over and glared at Wendy.

"Why did you turn it to dams?" Natsu asked furiously.

"I don't know! I just turned the tv on and apparently dad was watching something on the History channel. How was I supposed to know that some stupid dams documentary was going to be on?" She whisper yelled back.

"Well maybe you should have looked to see if it was at least remotely believable!"

"I just did what you told me to!"

"Since when did you start to listen to me?"

"Are these biscuits in the oven?" Grandine asked from a few rooms away.

"Yes mom. I thought we could have some to tide us over until supper is done." Wendy yelled as she continued to glare at Natsu. It is amazing how she can keep up so many facades at the same time and remember which face she uses for which. She is so sweet to everybody but then Natsu comes along and it is Sparta.

"Natsu, did you not clean up your crumbs again?" Grandine asked yet again.

"Sorry. I promise I will next time." Natsu said not taking his gaze off of Wendy.

"One more thing…. Why is the cabinet against the other wall?"

Oh no….

And I am back! Sorry for the scare guys! I was going through a lot and the hate messages were not helping. I would like to thank everyone who reviewed and managed to cheer me up. This chapter is dedicated to you! I literally considered to just stop fanfiction and after reading everyone's messages and reviews, it gave me the support i needed to write this.

After the last message, I decided I didnt want to make this a heavy chapter so I tried to update this with a light-weight, sort of care free vibe to it. I really enjoyed writing this after the short little break I had, and it made me realize how much i would miss fanfiction if i stopped now.

To all of you haters:

NOTHING WILL MAKE ME QUIT DOING WHAT I LOVE!

I got around 60 reviews all telling me things that i could do to improve the story or telling me that I cant let people get to me like that and i am eternally grateful. Fanfiction is almost like a vent that i used to get rid of pent up feelings. It is what i use to express my quirky style, and that is why my stories range in genres. I enjoy writing for you guys and enjoy reading what you think.

Also, i found out that I have many silent readers. Thank you for being there when i needed you! You guys brought this story up to 210 reviews, and over 200 followers. Because of that, i will do what my friend suggested and upload another chapter some time this week as a reward. Not to mention, this story was also excepted into a community!

I love you guys will all of my heart and i hope to hear back from you! Over and out~
