Luck of the Unwanted~
Chapter 23
Natsu's POV
It was starting to get late and almost time for curfew. Normally I wouldn't have cared, but who wants to be late to get presents? When Gray asked me, I passed it off as Lucy's first Christmas , and he somehow bought it.
We made our way to the car and left. Turning on the radio, I sang a few lyrics while Lucy looked out of the window most of the ride. Every once in a while, she would look over to me and smile, but I couldn't figure out why.
Once we made it home, I walked in the door leaving it open for Lucy to walk through once she got out of the door. Walking in, she closed the door slowly and quietly, allowing no one to wake up.
Under the tree were presents wrapped and placed neatly under the tree. Soon Lucy was beside me staring at the tree.
"Well maybe we should go get some sleep." I said, as I started to walk towards the stairs. A few steps later, I felt something tugging at my sleeve. Turning, I noticed it was Lucy. I notice how close we really were as we went tumbling to the ground.
Somehow, as we fell, I managed to shift my weight so wouldn't crush her. In the end, I landed on my knees hovering over her.
And at that moment, everything I had been feeling revealed itself. All of those times that I felt conscious of her presence, why I wanted to protect, why I wanted her to be near me. All of those feelings surfaced in that one action and I started to feel myself getting closer and closer to her. When my lips touched hers, everything seemed to be at peace.
I quickly parted from her, realizing what I had just done. I looked at her, as she faced towards the floor, bangs covering her eyes. I stared at her for a few seconds. Just as I was about to apologize, a strange voice spoke. One I had never heard before.
Lucy POV
As I fell, and Natsu's lips touched mine, a whole new feeling overcame me. Something welled up inside me, prying away inside me to try to get out. I looked at the ground after we parted, and sat there a few seconds trying to figure out what is happening. Just like that, something that hadn't been heard in years was once again unlocked. Something I thought I had thrown away a long time ago.
"N-Natsu?"
My voice came out hoarse and quiet, almost like I croaked instead of spoke.
"Lucy?" Natsu asked as he shifted his weight off of his knees.
At that, I looked up at him as tears filled my eyes. He stood there, frozen, until a grin broke across his face.
"Lucy? Lucy did you just speak?" Natsu asked animatedly.
"It… h-hurts." I said as I grabbed my throat. It was almost like a cat was using the inside of my throat as a scratching post. My voice didn't sound as bad as it did last time, but it still sounded pretty rusty.
"If it hurts, don't talk. I just, I cant believe you can talk. It's almost like a real Christmas miracle you could say." Natsu said with a laugh as I smiled at him. I think you could probably say that he is more excited about this than I am.
Suddenly there were shuffling sounds coming from upstairs and Natsu and my gaze quickly shot in the direction of the stairs. We both looked at each other and nodded, already knowing what we were going to do.
It was after 1 o'clock, and Grandine would most likely not believe us if we told her we had been here for a while doing… things….
Natsu and I quickly made a run for the kitchen, knowing we didn't have time to get to the stairs, up them, and in our rooms in time. Therefore, we ran to the kitchen and hid behind the island.
As Grandine descended the stairs, she scratched the back of her head and yawned before looking around the room. Shrugging, she made her way towards the kitchen and towards our hiding spot. I looked at Natsu for any clue as to what our plan of action should be, but he only looked lost in thought.
The closer she got, the more desperate I became. I looked at Natsu, frantic this time, and tried to uncover some sort of plan from his face. Suddenly, his face lit up and he motioned me to follow him.
When Grandine came into the kitchen, she immediately bee-lined for the fridge, directly where our hiding place was. As she got closer, we moved slowly so she wouldn't see us around the other side of the island, like in some sort of spy movie.
She poured herself a glass of milk, and down it in one go before going following our path of escape making us continue to "walk" in a crouched positioned sort of like a crab. She soon walked back up the stairs and out of sight as Natsu and I finally let go of the breath we were holding.
"Ok maybe now we should go to bed." Natsu stated as he stood from his crouch-like position. I nodded following his movements. I was about to follow him up the stairs as well, but he didn't move. I gave him a quizzical look, but he didn't move.
"Before I go to bed will you speak one more thing? After all, the first word you said was my name." Natsu boasted raising his eyebrows and smirking. I felt a light brush come over my face and smacked the back of my hand against his chest.
"Well I was going to but you ruined it." I said. It feels weird to talk. Almost like a taboo of some sorts. It's just not supposed to happen. I am supposed to be chasing down my white board or looking for a marker, not speaking using words and communicating.
"Well too bad because you just did."
"Shut up."
"No, I like to hear your voice. It's sweet and calming." Natsu said. I know he was trying to be sweet, but in a way it seemed to be a tad bit creepy.
"Thank you?" I said almost like a question. I wasn't sure what he meant by that, but I am going to take it as a compliment for the sake of my self- esteem.
"Yes, we should really be going to bed now or else Santa wont come." Natsu said giddily and he quietly ran up the stairs.
He doesn't know does he….
I woke up the next morning with a pair of eyes staring at me. At first I just passed it off as being in my dream, but once I did a double take I noticed there was something a little odd.
"Good morning Lucy-san! Do you know what today is?" Before I could even remotely answer, she got in my face and screamed the answer.
"It's CHRISTMAS!"
And with that she went scurrying down the stairs as Natsu was running in.
"Come on Luce! You saw the presents last night, let's go open them!" Natsu shouted as he grabbed my hand and literally dragged me down the stairs. Not only that, but when he started to drag me from my bed, my feet got tangled and I was sent spiraling into the air due to the momentum from Natsu making to so I was literally flying in the air behind him.
Once we got down the stairs and to the living room, all I could do was smile. Not only because it was Christmas, but because of the atmosphere, the energy in the room. Everyone just wanted to have a good Christmas. And they wanted to do that together.
"Good morning dear. I hope Natsu and Wendy weren't to hard on you this morning. Christmas is everyone's favorite holiday in this house so they often take it to extremes." Grandine explained. I smiled and she motioned to the tree.
"Well what are you waiting for? Open your presents!" She exclaimed as Igneel brought her a cup of coffee. I followed her instructions and made my way to the tree looking for a section of presents labeled 'Lucy'.
"Wow! This is awesome!" Natsu yelled behind me.
"This is soooo cute!" Wendy squealed.
I slowly and carefully opened each present and in the end, I was so happy, I could barely stand.
"Lucy are you okay? You look a bit sad." Natsu stated cocking his head sideways. I touched my cheeks and realized I had been crying. I shook my head no and smiled. Next thing I knew, I had jumped up and hugged Natsu's neck, which he gladly returned.
"Are you going to tell them?" He whispered so only I could hear.
"What's to lose?" I whispered back as he gave me an encouraging smile.
We soon separated and stood side by side. I took a deep breath and looked at Grandine and Igneel head on.
"Lucy has something she wants to say." Natsu said as Igneel got a puzzled look on his face.
"Say? But I thought…. don't tell me." Grandine spoke as a grin came over her face.
"Merry Christmas everyone. Thank you so much for everything!" I said with a smile.
