Wow….Looks like I've finally hit the inevitable….I knew this was gonna happen eventually…I just didn't want it to come…Yep as you all can tell it's been over a month since I last updated… :( And unfortunately that's probably gonna be a reoccurring trend from now on… But enough of that…Chapter 39 commence!
The entire forest shook as Wiggler charged for both Yoshi and Birdo.
"YOSHI! BIRDO! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!"
Mario's voice shouted, Yoshi and Birdo remained glued to their spots.
"GET OUTTA THE WAY!"
Luigi's voice also cried out, followed by Peach and Daisy.
"She's WAY too giant to fight head-on…
…..
There's gotta be some way to take her on….."
Yoshi blinked as the realization that Wiggler was merely 10 feet away from them broke him out of his moment of thought. Taking his wife's arm Yoshi quickly leapt out of Wiggler's path. Yoshi felt his body hit the ground, Birdo landing right next to him. A frustrated growl from Wiggler caused Yoshi to jump to his feet.
"YOSHI! BIRDO! THIS WAY!"
Mario and the others called, waving their arms urgently. Before Yoshi or Birdo had a chance to respond a loud roar caused everyone to flinch.
"STAY OUT OF THIS! YOU MEDDLESOME PESTS!"
Without warning Wiggler charged past Yoshi and Birdo just barely missing them and charged towards Mario and the others. With not much time to react Mario, Peach, Luigi and Daisy scattered. Letting out a frustrated growl Yoshi suddenly had an idea. Despite Wiggler's enormous size there was still only one of her and six of them. Perhaps they could use their numbers to their advantage. Yoshi quickly turned to Birdo, as the rest of the group ran over towards them.
"Birdo…We all need to run in separate directions…." At first Birdo looked terrified of the idea. Mario, Peach, Luigi and Daisy looked at Yoshi as if he were crazy. "Wiggler is obviously way too big for us to fight her head-on….But we can at least confuse her." The group seemed to understand where Yoshi was going with his plan. "She can't chase all 6 of us, if we're all in different spots and most likely she'll end up becoming too disoriented that we may be able to find a way to take her down!" Before Yoshi could say anything else, the group could feel the ground begin to shake.
"EVERYBODY SCATTER!"
Yoshi shouted, giving a reassuring nod at his wife. The group immediately complied and ran in different directions. Wiggler suddenly came to a halt as she watched the 6 individuals split. Yoshi's plan seemed to work as Wiggler's eyes struggled to follow all 6 friends. Frustration apparently in her eyes, Wiggler let out a growl. Yoshi smiled as Wiggler remained immobile. The group formed a large circle around Wiggler, however they avoided staying idle to keep Wiggler as distracted as possible. Quickly looking around Wiggler's frustrated look suddenly turned to a murderous smirk as her eyes locked onto her preferred target. Without hesitation Wiggler bolted for her intended victim. Yoshi's smile turned to horror as a familiar cry rang out.
"BIRDO!"
Yoshi called out in terror, as his wife broke the circle to flee from Wiggler. Despite her fairly decent speed Birdo could not outrun Wiggler for long.
"THIS WAY! YOU DESPICABLE WORM!"
Yoshi jumped startled as the shouts came from his 4 friends. All 4 of them throwing rocks at Wiggler allowing Birdo to get out of harms way. Yoshi let out a sigh of relief however it was short lived.
"I WARNED ALL OF YOU ABOUT MEDDLING!"
Wiggler bellowed, causing some of the leaves from nearby trees to blow off.
"NOW YOU CAN ALL SIT BACK AND WATCH!"
The ground began to shake and rumble as the group of 4 felt the ground heave from under them. Before any of them had time to react a huge hole opened from under them. Screams echoed as Mario and the others disappeared into the hole.
"NO!"
Both Yoshi and Birdo yelled. Wiggler let out a booming laugh.
"TRY GETTING YOURSELVES OUTTA THIS!"
Yoshi let out a growl as he stared at the hole which his friends had disappeared into.
"NOW THAT THOSE MEDDLING FOOLS ARE GONE! BACK TO BUSINESS!"
Knowing before it even happened Birdo made a run towards the large tree as Wiggler charged at her again. Despite being a long distance away Yoshi ran as fast as he could towards his wife. Birdo came to a halt as she made it to the tree, she quickly turned around to face the monster coming right at her. Despite her fear Birdo stared directly at Wiggler with a firm stare. Yoshi watched shocked as Birdo stood planted at her spot, Wiggler was closing in fast. Yoshi let out a whimpered gasp as reality hit him, he was way too far away to be able to make it to Birdo in time.
"BIRDO!"
Yoshi cried out, as Wiggler gained speed and rammed towards Birdo with all her might. A loud crash shook the forest.
"N-no…..NO!"
Yoshi choked, as dust clouded where Birdo and Wiggler had been. Despite being exhausted Yoshi forced his body to run faster. He finally made it to the tree and was met with a shocking sight. Wiggler laid on the ground and appeared to be unconscious, a large indent was visible in the tree's trunk, which was obviously from Wiggler's head making contact with it. However there was no sign of Birdo, letting out a whimper Yoshi quickly ran over to the seemingly unconscious Wiggler. Panicking Yoshi looked for some sign of his wife, terrified that Wiggler had managed to succeed in her goal. However Birdo was nowhere to be seen. Completely overwhelmed with denial Yoshi felt his legs give out, he felt his knees hit the ground.
"No….NO!
WHY!
Birdo…"
Yoshi felt moisture hit the top of his hands, looking down he saw several droplets on the ground. Breathing heavily Yoshi quickly turned his head towards Wiggler, he felt his face burn, his entire body twitched uncontrollably. Yoshi felt a low hiss escape his throat as he forced himself to stand. His face burning even more profusely he stomped towards Wiggler, not even knowing what he was going to do. Just as Yoshi was inches from Wiggler a soft whimper caused him to stop where he stood.
"That's what you get for insulting my daughter you evil creature…"
A weak labored voice gasped, just several feet from where Yoshi stood. Startled Yoshi quickly looked around in every direction trying to find the source of the voice.
"Are you alright Dear?"
Yoshi felt his heart stop, as a figure stumbled from behind the tree into plain sight. Yoshi didn't even have time to think as his legs involuntarily broke into a run. He ran towards the figure and locked them into a tight hug.
"Birdo…..You're alive…." Yoshi whispered tears threatening to fill up in his eyes again. Yoshi felt a hand touch his face.
"I'm sorry I worried you Dear…."
A soft voice whispered.
"It was the only way I could think of to knock her out of commission…"
Yoshi responded with an even tighter grip.
"I'm just glad you're safe…." Yoshi whispered back, looking up his eyes meeting his wife's.
….
Yoshi suddenly yelped in pain as he felt something slam hard into his abdomen, knocking him into a large boulder.
"HOW TOUCHING!"
Yoshi felt a familiar tingle run down his spine.
"YOU AND YOUR WENCH MAKE ME SICK!"
Yoshi quickly looked up and was immediately filled with anger. Wiggler stood where she had just moments before been unconscious. Birdo sat several feet from her, obviously in shock. Yoshi quickly became aware of what had hit him.
"DON'T THINK OUR BATTLE IS DONE JUST YET! I STILL HAVE A WENCH TO TAKE CARE OF!"
Wiggler spat, without another word she rammed Yoshi with her lower body, knocking him another several feet, strangely the force wasn't as hard as it seemed it should have been. Yoshi felt his body hit and slide across the ground, wincing in pain he struggled to stand as a familiar cry rang out.
"Birdo…" Yoshi choked, forcing himself to stand and quickly looking in the direction of the cry. To his shock Wiggler was already a good distance ahead of him, looking off into the distance Yoshi ran towards a distant boulder. Yoshi didn't even pay attention to what was around him as he suddenly found himself at the edge of a large ditch where a large pool of lava led to a small patch of familiar ground. Yoshi was confused to see that Wiggler was nowhere in sight. Yoshi let out a breath of exhaustion when suddenly a strong jolt of foreboding struck him. Quickly looking down Yoshi was petrified, down at the bottom of the ditch laid Birdo, she appeared to be unconscious. Yoshi's gasp of fear was interrupted by a familiar rumbling sound and a loud laugh.
"LOOKS LIKE I'VE GOT A CLUMSY WENCH TO TROUNCE! *laugh* SHE CERTAINLY IS YOUR CLUMSY SPAWN'S MOTHER! *laugh*"
Yoshi's eyes shrank in fear as the greatest nightmare of his life was being replayed right before his eyes. Wiggler charged down the steep incline towards Birdo, who still laid motionless. Yoshi felt a large surge of adrenalin rush through his body, letting out a loud growl Yoshi leapt from his position and charged towards Wiggler. Birdo suddenly stirred as she slowly glanced behind her, she let out a whimper as her eyes caught sight of the creature. Wiggler's eyes were filled with an insanity that informed Birdo that this may well be the final moments of her adventure. Despite her immense fear Birdo forced herself to keep a firm face, she wasn't going to give this monster the satisfaction of taking her down completely petrified.
"Come and get me you FOUL creature…."
Was Birdo's last thought as suddenly something jumped in front of her.
"Yoshi…" Birdo gasped her voice weak, looking up at her husband as he stared Wiggler down.
"I love you Birdo!" Yoshi's voice suddenly sounded his voice almost cracking, as Wiggler made a lunge for them. Yoshi clenched his teeth as Wiggler was an arms length from them. Not even thinking and overwhelmed by the pulsing adrenalin Yoshi made a lunge for Wiggler.
"NOT
MY
WIFE!"
Yoshi screamed as he to the shock of himself and his wife lifted Wiggler over his head and flung her over his shoulder. A high pitched scream echoed into the forest, however it quickly ceased. For what seemed like forever, neither Yoshi nor Birdo moved nor made a sound. Completely taken aback by what had just transpired. Letting out a deep breath Yoshi slowly turned to look behind him. Wiggler was nowhere in sight, only the pool of lava was visible.
"We…We did it…"
Yoshi felt his legs give out as he stared at the lava, before quickly turning his attention to his wife. Birdo immediately threw herself into Yoshi's arms, giving a few quick sobs before looking Yoshi in the face.
"Y-you did it Yoshi! *laugh* You did it!" She laughed squeezing him as tightly as she could.
"YOSHI! BIRDO! WHERE ARE YOU!"
Both Yoshi and Birdo jumped startled.
"Mario?" Yoshi asked quietly as suddenly 4 familiar figures appeared at the top of the ditch.
"Oh Yoshi! Birdo! You're alright!" Peach called her voice full of relief. Mario, Luigi and Daisy looked down into the ditch, relief also on their faces. Yoshi turned to his wife, Birdo smiled. Yoshi took Birdo's arm gently and helped her to her feet. They both made their way up the ditch. Mario and Luigi reached their hands out as they helped Birdo up the slope then finally Yoshi.
"You okay there buddy?" Mario asked as he and Luigi pulled Yoshi up the slope. Yoshi glanced behind himself and stared at the lava pool his face held disappointment. "Yoshi?" Mario's voice sounded as Yoshi felt a hand to his shoulder. A pained expression etched on his face Yoshi turned to look at his friend.
"I don't understand…." He whispered, staring at the ground. "The clue said to come here…" Yoshi's voice held frustration. "But there isn't a Star…." This time Yoshi's voice held sadness. The 5 remaining friends' faces fell, realizing the sad truth. Birdo went to take Yoshi's arm however he quickly looked up, his face determined, yet it still held a hint of sadness. "Let's go….." He said firmly as he made his way towards the exit. Mario and the others gave sympathetic glances at Birdo before turning back towards Yoshi. Birdo stared at her husband, before staring at the ground. Several moments went by before she slowly walked to join her husband.
"Let's-a-go….." Mario whispered solemnly, Luigi and the others nodded. Slowly making their way out of their friend's nightmare…..
I think this may be the LONGEST chapter I have posted thus far! I hope it makes up for the long wait…
Also this chapter marks a momentous occasion…. As of today A Complicated Destiny has now hit 100 pages! O_O ….One….Hundred…Pages…I think I'm gonna cry…I never imagined I'd write ANYTHING this long before… I GREATLY THANK ALL OF YOU who have been with A Complicated Destiny since the beginning! : ) It's because of you all that it's made it this far! So THANK YOU EVERYONE!
*Silence*
….Wow…What a blow for poor Yoshi…Forced to relive the greatest nightmare of his life…Only to find it fruitless…. :( ….. *silence*
