(I'm super sorry I haven't added anything here in awhile, I have a bunch already written on tumblr, I have just gotten lazy in transferring them! Feel free to remind me if it gets to be more than a few weeks next time!)
This is a birthday gift for the lovely Cassie (queenvampirebarbie)!
She requested: Set in Nola. Caroline's been living there but they're just 'friends,' it's Klaus' birthday and Caroline throws him a party! That was Caroline's gift to Klaus, but what he wants is a birthday kiss from her!
"Caroline, love, would you please tell me where you're taking me?" Klaus asked for what must have been the tenth time that night.
Caroline just laughed and shook her head, grabbing his hand and pulling him further down the street. Any further complaints died on his lips as he tightened his fingers around hers and continued to follow her.
If someone had told him five years ago that Caroline Forbes, the only person in the world who could still make him feel human, would move to New Orleans after she finished college, he would have laughed at them, though secretly he would have jumped for joy. Now that it was a reality, he was still shocked she was there, never truly believing she would show up on his doorstep in less than a century's time.
But then again, she hadn't, not really. She had said she was tired of all the Mystic Falls drama and she wanted to get away. But she wasn't ready to leave completely. She still had her mother to worry about and she didn't want to leave the country and risk something happening while she was away. Admirable, of course, but still immensely frustrating for him. He wanted to show her the world, all of it, but he supposed he could begin with one of his favorite cities.
And that would have been wonderful, showing her his world, his home, watching her face light up at every new sight and experience. Yet he didn't really have that, either. Because they were still 'just friends.' Caroline had been quite clear when she showed up at his home. She was there to get away, to experience new things, to let him share those experiences with her, but only as a friend. She wasn't ready for forever yet, she had said.
And Klaus could wait, he would wait, for her. But he wasn't sure if having her by his side, day in and day out, yet not actually having her was better or worse than if she had remained away. But in the end he would take what he could get; any time with Caroline was worth the heartache of not being able to hold her, touch her, feel her like he had that one glorious day in the woods. Fleeting touches helped, though, even if they were merely friendly in nature and not romantic. The feeling of her warm hand in his as she dragged him down the sidewalk was enough to sate him. For now.
"Okay, here we are!" Caroline declared, coming to a stop in front of a familiar bar.
Klaus gave her a puzzled look. "Sweetheart, we come here almost every night, why didn't you just tell me where we were going?"
"Because it was a surprise," the blonde said, grinning mischievously as he looked at her with a raised brow, wondering what she was up to.
"What do you-"
"Surprise!"
A chorus of voices greeted him as they stepped through the door, causing his eyes to widen in shock. Not much could surprise the thousand year old hybrid, yet Caroline had managed it with seeming ease.
"What is going on here?" Klaus asked suspiciously, narrowing his eyes at the familiar faces that surrounded him.
Caroline rolled her eyes. "It's your surprise party, duh!"
"My… party for what, love?" he questioned, earning him and incredulous look from the blonde vampire.
"I told you he had forgotten," Rebekah said, a superior look on her face as she approached the two.
"Fine, you were right," Caroline conceded, rolling her eyes once more at the smirk that appeared on the other girl's lips. "I still think it's ridiculous that he didn't remember his own birthday, though."
Klaus regarded the two blondes with surprise. "You planned a birthday party for me?"
Rebekah snorted, which still sounded surprisingly dignified coming from her. "Don't look at me, I've lived with you long enough to know better. This was all Caroline's doing."
He looked at Caroline, raising a brow in question as she blushed under his gaze.
"Um, yeah, well, you did say you loved birthdays… before, when, um… well, I just thought everyone deserves a birthday party," she stuttered, grinning awkwardly.
"Don't be so modest, darling! This one certainly knows how to throw a shindig, Nik," Kol said as he joined them, throwing his arms around Caroline and Rebekah's shoulders as he winked at Caroline.
"Ugh, Kol! Isn't there someone else you can bother?" Rebekah groused, shrugging him off of her almost as quickly as Caroline did.
"Now, now, Bekah, no need to take your frustrations with Marcel out on me," he mocked, barely managing to avoid the elbow she aimed at his midsection. "Besides, this party is lacking one important element: dinner."
"There is food over there, Kol," Caroline glared, crossing her arms over her chest. "Just because there's no one for you to snack on doesn't mean there's nothing to eat."
Klaus continued to watch the exchange with amusement. He was secretly glad Kol frustrated Caroline to no end; he had certainly had his fill of love triangles with a sibling. Besides, their bickering was always a good source of entertainment, and tonight appeared to be no exception.
"-Seriously, Kol! Fine! If you promise to behave yourself tonight I will give you Bonnie's number after!" Caroline was saying, hands fisted at her sides as she stared the annoying Original down.
"Deal!" Kol answered immediately, reaching out and grabbing her right hand and shaking it in a show of sealing the agreement before he disappeared back into the crowd with a grin.
Caroline shook her head as she watched him go, wiping her hand on her dress in an exaggerated show of disgust.
"Your witch friend is not going to be pleased with you," Rebekah chided, shaking her head.
"She'll survive," Caroline said, waving her off. "Besides… she actually asked me to give it to him last week, so…"
Rebekah gave her an impressed look. "I underestimated you Caroline. You'd better watch yourself around this one, Nik," she said, giving the younger girl an appraising look before heading over to the bar where Elijah stood.
Caroline looked at Klaus, feeling oddly awkward now that they were alone again. "Sooo, what do you think?" she asked nervously, tucking a curl behind her ear.
He watched the movement with rapt attention before he answered. "Well, you certainly haven't lost your touch for hosting events," he said, observing the balloons and streamers situated around the room. Klaus also noted that he actually knew everyone in attendance, and not only knew, but could at least stand them, something that he had a feeling was also Caroline's doing.
When she kept looking at him expectantly he continued, "Of course I love it, sweetheart. Thank you."
The wide smile that lit up her face brought a smile to his own.
"Good," she teased, reaching down to grab his hand again, a habit he was certainly coming to enjoy, and began leading him towards the food. "Come, on, let me show you around," she said enthusiastically, and Klaus was more than happy to oblige.
As the evening turned to night, and then began to head towards morning, Klaus decided that this was one of the most enjoyable birthdays he had spent in a long time. And it was all thanks to Caroline.
He had spent the night chatting with old friends and new acquaintances, pleased to not encounter a single person whose heart he would rather rip out than converse with them. Klaus had certainly experienced enough parties that had been used for social tactics and plots more often than not, so it was refreshing to not have to worry about political maneuvering or threats on one's life for once.
The party went off without a hitch, most likely due to Caroline's deal with Kol. Klaus had caught his brother on the brink of mischief more than once, yet he always ended up backing down, especially when Caroline was watching. Klaus had no idea what was going on with his brother and the Bennett witch, but it must be something for Kol to act like a civilized human being for a whole evening.
As the celebration began to wind down, Klaus found himself on the second story of the bar, leaning on the railing as he overlooked the party goers down below.
"Mind if I join you?"
Klaus looked up at the sound of her voice, a smile immediately crossing his lips. "Not at all, love, please," he said, gesturing with his glass of bourbon to a spot next to him.
"So," Caroline began, fiddling with her own glass of bright pink liquid as she leaned on the wooden rail. "Having fun?"
"I would call your party a success, yes," he said with a grin, downing the last of his drink before turning to face her. "Tell me, sweetheart, why did you really go to all this trouble?"
"Oh, it wasn't any trouble, really," she assured him, meeting his eyes. "You know me, party planning is kinda my thing!"
He merely raised a brow at her, waiting for her to continue.
Caroline sighed, realizing he wasn't going to drop it. "Well, we're friends, Klaus. It's what friends do. And besides, I told you already, everyone deserves to have a birthday party."
Klaus gave her a small smile, satisfied with her answer. For now.
They continued to watch the party below in comfortable silence for a few minutes before he spoke again. "Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it still customary to give the guest of honor a gift?"
The blonde laughed, nudging his arm with her elbow from where they both leaned on the rail. "I did give you a gift, remember? This great party," she said with a wink. "Why, what were you hoping for?"
"A kiss," Klaus blurted out before he could stop himself. He closed his eyes in regret when he heard her sharp intake of breath, mentally kicking himself for possibly pushing her away with his unwanted advances. "Caroline, I-"
"Okay."
"-didn't mean… What?" he asked, eyes flying open as her words registered.
"It's your birthday after all," Caroline said quickly, not meeting his eyes.
"Sweetheart, you don't have to-" he tried, only to be interrupted by the younger vampire once more.
"I want to," she said, her eyes widening in surprise at her own words. "I mean… Shut up, Klaus," she added, preempting any comments from him.
Klaus began to open his mouth to say something regardless, when suddenly he felt her lips on his own, his mind immediately going blank, save for memories from that day years ago.
His hand found its way into her hair, holding her close as her lips continued to move against his. Her mouth parted, her tongue slipping between his lips, which happily separated for her. She sighed into his mouth as their tongues twined together, her hands flying to his neck, grasping his shirt collar. He could taste the fruity tang of her drink on her invading tongue, delighting in how it seemed to fit her perfectly as his other arm wrapped around her waist, pulling her close-
When the sound of glass shattering and cries of surprise tore them apart.
Klaus looked down at the girl still in his arms, lips red and parted as she caught her breath, staring up at him with wide eyes. They both looked down, searching for the source of the unfortunate noise that ended their kiss. Below them stood a rather annoyed looking Elijah, broken glass around his feet as well as a pink puddle that seemed to also continue in spatters up his pant legs.
Rebekah stood next to him, staring knowingly up at the pair. "Perhaps you should secure your drink better the next time you decide to make out with my brother, Caroline," she called up to them, paying no attention to the rest of the people who had gathered around when the drink fell.
"Oh my god," Caroline whined softly, turning in Klaus' arms and burying her face in his chest.
"Well, this is certainly a party to remember," Kol called loudly from the crowd below. "I'll be sure and tell Bonnie all about it when I call her tomorrow."
Klaus couldn't be sure, but he thought he heard a muffled 'I hate your family' come from the girl pressed against his chest. "Just wait until you've spent a millennia with them, love," he mused, comfortingly stroking her hair.
He felt more than heard another groan before she lifted her head to look at him again. "Tell me you still have those daggers."
Klaus chuckled as he looked down at her, noting how she hadn't balked at the idea of a thousand years spent with them; spent with him.
