Another mini drabble prompt: one night stand and falling pregnant
This one got a sequel request, so look for that later :)
AH/AU
"Well fuck."
Caroline stared hard at the little plastic stick, as if the force of her glare could make one of the two lines disappear.
"Well? What's the verdict?" a voice asked from the other side of the bathroom door.
The blonde groaned, sinking down onto the toilet lid, knees suddenly feeling weak. "My life is over." One night of fun and BAM! End of the line.
The door slowly creaked open, a brunette head of curls poking in through the gap. "So it's positive, I take it?" Katherine asked, lips curving into an unusually sympathetic smile.
"Why does this always happen to me?" Caroline moaned, head hanging low. "The life crapping all over me part, not the pregnancy thing," she clarified, lifting her head up to look at her best friend with a scowl. "No, this is a whole new level of hell."
Katherine chuckled deep in her throat as she walked fully into the room. "Oh come on, Caroline. Pregnancy isn't so bad! If I can do it, so can you."
Caroline shot her a glare. "That's easy for you to say! You and Elijah planned it. I just made a stupid mistake!" One that had felt amazing at the time, but still. Getting knocked up had not been part of the deal.
The brunette's gaze softened as she crouched down next to her friend, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. "Well, it doesn't have to be a mistake…"
The distraught woman looked up, brow furrowed in thought for a moment before she sighed. "No, I guess not. But I think I want to keep it… Is that weird?" Caroline asked, biting her lip nervously. "I mean, it was only a one night stand, I don't even know where to find the guy! But…"
Katherine offered up a gentle smile. "The heart wants what it wants, Caroline. It's not weird, trust me."
"Thanks Kat."
"And about finding him…"
Caroline's eyes narrowed in suspicion. "Katherine…."
The brunette's mouth twitched into a more familiar smirk. "Well, remember when I said I didn't see who you ran off with that night?"
"Yes…"
"Well, that was a lie."
"Katherine!"
The smirk widened. "And I just so happen to know who he is. Quite well, actually. And where you can find him."
The look in her friend's eyes filled Caroline with even more apprehension instead of the comfort she had been hoping for.
"Well here goes everything," Caroline mumbled to herself, taking a deep breath before raising her hand to knock on the door. "Katherine better be right about this."
Her heart leapt into her throat as soon as the door opened to reveal an all too familiar head of blonde curls and piercing blue eyes; eyes that looked at her in confusion for a moment before widening in recognition. Eyes that she had only seen for one night a month ago.
"… Caroline?"
"Klaus." she said with a nod. "Nice to know you remember my name."
She saw a flash of what might have been hurt in his eyes and she felt a bit guilty for her remark. Maybe she shouldn't take her frustrations out on him but it was his damn fault she was in this situation to begin with! Or at least half of his fault, anyway.
"Um, can I come in for a minute?" she tried again, forcing a nervous smile on her face.
He only hesitated a moment before holding the door open wider and stepping back, allowing her space to enter. "Sure, love."
Caroline found herself inside a rather nice looking loft, noting the various canvases stacked against easels and walls, vaguely remembering him saying something about being an artist that night. She had definitely been way too preoccupied the last time she was there to notice anything besides his bedroom.
After almost a minute of awkward silence Klaus cleared his throat. "Was there something you needed from me, Caroline? Did you leave something with me by mistake, perhaps?"
Caroline felt a laugh bubble up from her throat before she could prevent it. "Actually, it's kind of the other way around," she muttered, unable to suppress a smile at the utter absurdity of the situation.
"I don't follow," he said, looking confused.
She looked up at him then, expression falling serious once more. "You should probably sit down," she sighed, looking around for something to sit on.
Klaus led her over to a couch, sitting hesitantly beside her. "That doesn't sound promising."
Caroline gave him a half smile. "Well, I guess that depends on how you take it," she offered cryptically, sighing again when he continued to look at her in confusion. "I don't really know of a good way to tell you this, so I'm just going to come right out and say it," she began, taking a deep breath before pausing.
He just looked at her anxiously, waiting.
"I'm pregnant. Yes, it's yours. Yes, I'm keeping it. No, you don't have to be involved. Yes, you can be, if you want. No, I'm not expecting you to marry me or even date me. No, I didn't know who you were before that night and I only found you today because Katherine is my best friend. Yes, your brother's wife-Katherine. Yes, she knows. No, he doesn't. And yes, I know how crazy this all sounds."
Klaus watched in increasingly stunned silence as the gorgeous blonde in front of him gave her speech in one breath. It was quite impressive, actually. Or at least he would have thought so if he weren't so shocked by what she had to say.
Taking his silence as an answer, Caroline started to rise. "Okay, well, if you change your mind, here's my number. Call me or whatever," she said quickly, placing her business card on the table, trying not to sound as disappointed as she felt.
A hand shot up, grabbing her arm before she could get more than two steps.
"Caroline, wait."
She looked back, surprised to see Klaus looking at her in wonder.
"I'm just a little shocked, sweetheart. Please don't go yet."
Caroline sat back down with only a little hesitation. She looked at him in silence, waiting for him to go on.
"It's… a lot to process," Klaus said slowly, hand still gripping her arm unknowingly. "I don't really know how to react," he admitted, giving her a small smile. "But I can't say I hate the idea."
She felt herself smiling in response. "Well, that's something I guess?"
He chuckled. "I suppose so, yes." His face turned serious then. "Before we discuss this any further, I have one thing to ask of you."
"What is it?" Caroline asked hesitantly, unsure of where this was going.
"Have dinner with me."
Well, she certainly wasn't expecting that.
"What?"
"Dinner. A date. With me."
Her eyes widened in surprise. "But, what- why? I said you didn't need to do anything like that."
Klaus gave her a smile, the same smile that started this whole damn mess in the first place, she noted. "I know, love. But I want to. Honestly, I wanted to see you again ever since that night, but you were gone before I woke up. Perhaps this is just fate giving us a second chance."
Caroline snorted. "Well, next time fate can be a bit less heavy-handed about it. But okay, a date."
Klaus smiled, his hand gliding down her arm to curl his fingers with hers- the mother of his future child.
"But the food better be amazing to make up for the wine I can't have anymore."
He chuckled, bringing her hand to his lips, placing a kiss on the back of it. "Of course, love."
