"Caroline? Are you alright, love?"
His concern was met with further sounds of retching through the bathroom door, thankfully followed by the toilet flushing and sink running only moments later. The door finally opened, a paler than usual Caroline emerging with an embarrassed smile.
"Sorry about that, I'm better now," she assured him, walking passed Klaus as if nothing had happened and rifling through her purse.
He followed her, puzzled. "Are you sure? You're not ill, are you? Because we can always go out another night-"
"No, I'm fine," Caroline responded quickly, giving him a reassuring smile. "Just a little morning sickness is all. This will help," she said, holding up a small hard candy she had retrieved from the depths of her handbag. He could just make out the word 'ginger' on the wrapper before she unwrapped it and popped it in her mouth.
"… it's seven o'clock at night."
"Tell that to my stomach," she snorted, rolling her eyes as she searched for her shoes. "I wish it only happened in the morning."
"Alright, but are you really sure-"
"Klaus! Calm down. I'm pregnant, not sick! This is just one of those wonderful side effects I have to live with; I'm not putting my life on hold just because of a little nausea," she told him, determined look on her face. "Besides, a few more weeks and it should be gone. Hopefully. Now, where did you have in mind for dinner tonight?"
Klaus observed her for a few moments as she pulled on a pair of heels, muttering something about wondering how long until she couldn't wear her babies anymore, before he answered. "I was thinking Mexican."
"Nope."
"I'm sorry?" he asked puzzled. They had gone to a Mexican restaurant a few weeks ago and Caroline had raved about it.
"I can't eat Mexican anymore. Not unless you want to watch me puke all over the restaurant."
"I thought you loved Mexican food, sweetheart?" he questioned, genuinely confused now.
Caroline gave him a look as if he should know what she was talking about. "I do. But the baby doesn't. Or the hormones don't, whatever. Anyway, the spice combination just doesn't sit right with me anymore, I can't even smell it without feeling sick now."
"Oh, I see. Well, what would you like then?" Klaus was still mildly confused, but just chalked it up to another pregnancy quirk and left it at that. He should really read those books Elijah had given him. It had only been a few months since he found out about the whole thing and already he felt behind.
"God I miss tacos…" Caroline murmured, looking up mournfully at the ceiling for a moment before looking back at him, considering his question. "Hmm, well I have been craving pizza lately. With extra cheese, god yes, so much cheese! And pineapple. But no ham though, that's just gross."
Klaus merely quirked an eyebrow, choosing not to comment on the flavor combination. "Anything you want, love."
"Great!" she exclaimed, brightening up as she picked up her purse and moved to grab her coat. She smiled up at him when he walked up and helped her into it. "Such a gentleman."
He gave her a dimpled grin. "Only the best for my girl," he said softly, leaning in to give her a gentle kiss.
"Mmm," she murmured her agreement before twisting out of his arms with a grin. "Now about that pizza…"
