Chapter 6

"What do you mean he doesn't exist?!" I scream into the phone. My voice echoed in the back seat of my car.

"I'm saying there is no such record of a Jasper Whitlock anywhere in Texas or New York or any other place for that matter. Jasper Whitlock does not exist." Demitri's cool voice replies back to my angry one.

"That can't be Demitri. He has to exist; you just can't make up a name like Jasper Whitlock. Do some digging and call me when you have some real information!" I snapped as I hung up the phone. This can't be. You just can't make up a name like Jasper Whitlock, it's almost impossible. It has to be a real name and he has to exist. I don't know what I will do if I don't know anything about this man.

"FUCK!" I scream in the empty of the car. I throw my phone on the seat next to me.

"Turn the car around", I command the driver to do as I pick up my phone and dial my mother's number.

She picks up on the 2nd ring, "Isabella shouldn't be on your way to your date with Riley Biers? Do you know how many times I had to apologize on your behalf and how long it took me to have him agree to meet you again? Now honey before you get mad at me, I'm not telling you get married and have children off the bat with him but at least give him a chance. He could be really good for you, he could be just what you need your life. Just", she takes a deep sigh and her voice softens, "just give him a chance… Please?"

I freeze as I hear the pleading tone in her voice. My mother never begs, yes she may insist but never begs. Maybe she really does want me to settle down and think about more than work.

"Of course mother I'm on my way there now. I just had to stop at home to change a little bit."

"Oh great, I hope everything goes alright and call me back with the details" you could hear her smile over the phone. She even gave a squeal of excitement. She hung up before I could reply.

I wasn't even mad at her, I just smiled. I cleared my throat and spoke to the driver, "Take me to the Italian restaurant on East 87th. I commanded the driver.

"Yes ma'am."

I really hope that I don't regret agreeing to go that date.

10 minutes later we pulled up to a snazzy looking Italian restaurant, Amore Ristorante; Love Restaurant. The driver opened the door and grabbed my hand to help me out of the car.

"Don't go too far I'm going to need you to help me make a quick escape if this doesn't go well", I say jokingly as I smooth my outfit out.

"Will do Miss Swan."

I turned towards the driver and gave him a little nod as I turned to walk towards the entrance of the restaurant. Why does it feel like I'm walking towards my death? Every time my mother sets me up on one of these dates, it always ends in disaster. It makes me hate men even more, especially the rich ones. They think the sun rises and sets for them. They think that every girl would be lucky to be by his side. They are pompous, snotty, spoiled, self-centered, and rude young men and wish I would have never met them.

As I walk towards the hostess I'm preparing myself for disaster.

"Hello my name is Margret and I am your hostess. Do you have a reservation or do you wish to set one?" Margret is a very pretty girl with a sweet and friendly smile. It's not forced like most hostesses' smiles and I can't help but smile at her.

"I have a reservation; Biers for two. I know I'm a little late." My tone was apologetic as I gave her a small smile.

Margret started tapping away on her tablet, "Ah yes I have here, you are in the upper level VIP section. If you would please follow me I will lead you to where you will be dining." She picked up a menu from under her podium and started walking towards the stairs. She led me upstairs to a dimly lit area where there were only 3 booths and only one booth in the far corner by the window was occupied. Margret led me to that table and I sat down.

"I'll get your waiter back up here as soon as possible. Thank you for choosing Amore Ristorante and I hope you enjoy your dinner." She gave a little bow and smile and turned around.

I look up at the man in front of me and am very surprised at what I see. His chocolate brown hair frames his thin, angular face perfectly, his hair is a little messy but it looks like it was styled that way, his deep brown eyes hold a glint of amusement or happiness; he has thin full lips that were quirked up in a little smile. He had a nice frame, broad shoulders that led to a thin waist. He was physically appealing, but I wasn't attracted to him. He didn't make me want to rip his clothes off.

"Miss Swan, it's nice to finally meet you. I will admit I was pretty disappointed when you stood me up a few days ago." Oh lord, his voice on the other hand made me want to listen to him talk all night. He had a seep voice but it wasn't really deep it was a deep voice that had a whimsical edge to it. Wonderful.

"I'm sorry about that. A friend of mine was admitted into the hospital I had to be for them, I'm all they have it seems." I spoke in a noncommittal tone as I took a sip of the water that was on the table.

Riley looked at me with an expression I could not decipher, until he saw the waiter walked up with a bottle of wine with a cloth wrapped around it.

He looked up at the waiter and his eyes lit up, "I hope that you don't mind, but I had already ordered a bottle of wine. I hope that you don't mind drinking a BORDEAUX, POMEROL, PETRUS 1978. I didn't know what kind of wine you drunk, white or red, so I chose one of my favorites." He sounded so worried that I reached across the table and grabbed his hand and gave it a little pat.

"It's fine; I love BORDEAUX, POMEROL, PETRUS 1978." I looked up at the waiter and gave him a nod of encouragement to start pouring me a glass. I slightly inhaled as the rich, fruity aroma filled my nostrils and senses.

The waiter slightly cleared his throat to get our attention, "Hello I'm Chris and I'll be your waiter. Can I start you off with a seasonal appetizer?"

I didn't want an appetizer, so I looked towards Riley and he shook his head no.

"No appetizers."

"Ah, well are you ready to order your main course? We have a wide variety of handmade pasta and seafood dishes."

"Riley, you can order first." I told him as I distractedly looked at my menu. Chris was right they do have a nice variety of seafood and pasta dishes and all sound delicious.

"Ok, I'll have the RISOTTO DI MARE. The… uhh… Acquerello carnaroli rice, lake perch, Manila clam, oyster, neonata sounds good."

"And I'll have the GNOCCHI ALLA SORRENTINA, potato dumplings, tomato & basil sauce, melted fresh mozzarella, as my first course and INVOLTINI DI POLLO SALTRANI, chicken breast pounded thin and stuffed with veal, spinach & cheeses, served with a sauce of black truffles & shallots as my second."

Riley and the waiter looked at me in shock.

"What?" I asked confused. I really don't know what the big deal is.

"You're eating a two course meal?" Riley's tone was nothing but astonishment and disbelief.

"No actually I'm eating three because when he comes back I'm going to order dessert." My voice was slightly muffled as I looked at the dessert menu. "You know what can I order my dessert now and you bring it to me after my dinner?" I looked up as I asked the waiter my question.

Chris looked completely flabbergasted, "Uh – uh y-y-yea-yeah… yes. Yes ma'am."

I turned my attention back onto the menu, "I'll have the uhhhh…. Tartufo."

As the waiter walked away Riley shook his head as if he couldn't belief something.

"Riley, what's the matter?" I innocently questioned. I knew exactly what he was confused about.

He gave a breathless scoff, "How can someone so tiny eat all that food? Most girls barely order a course and just eat salad."

I coyly took a sip of my wine, "Well Mr. Biers I am no like most girls. I may have been raised a certain way but I'm no different than your average girl who just doesn't care."

Riley raised his glass, "Well Miss Swan here is to getting to know each other better in the future." He had the most adorable smile on his face. I want to tell him that I'm looking for a relationship and that I don't feel that way about him… but I can't.

I gave him a small smile of my own, "I'll toast to that."

Dinner was a very fun and entertaining occasion. It has been a while since I was able to sincerely enjoy a dinner. Usually the only dinners I go to are the ones that involve contract signings and business deals. It was nice to be able to sit and relax and enjoy a laugh at dinner. It was a whole new experience.

Riley and I had a grand time and some of it is thanks to the 3 bottles of wine that we had. I feel sort of bad about all the wine we drunk, considering a bottle of BORDEAUX, POMEROL, PETRUS 1978 is priced at almost $1,400; it is a very expensive wine.

I was little tipsy but not by much, I could walk straight and see everything, kind of. I don't remember ever calling my driver, getting into the car, and telling him to take me to the hospital. I don't remember ever getting to the hospital or falling asleep at Jasper's bedside.

But somehow I did.
