The Other Girl
Inuyasha groaned as the sun peaked through his curtains and shined in his face. Thirty seconds later his alarm clock blared to life, so he hit the snooze button to silence the contraption. Soon his bare feet were padding along his carpeted floor, carrying his weary body towards the bathroom.
Returning to his room after a quick shower, Inuyasha finally directed his attention to the figure in his bed. Her blazing red locks a dramatic contrast against his white sheets. Ayame. He wrote her a note letting her know he had left for class and to use the spare key under the mat to lock the door when she left.
As Inuyasha made his way out the door and towards campus, he let his thoughts wonder. He often wondered how he gotten to where he was. Dating one girl while still being completely hung up on another. It was pathetic really, it'd been almost two months since the last time he'd seen Kagome. Two months he'd been living with a broken heart. She'd told him that she still loved him, that it wasn't the end for them, but that promise got harder and harder to believe the longer he went without a call or a text from her.
He'd held out hope for awhile, patiently waiting for her to be ready, for her to accept him back into her life. Miroku had convinced him that it wasn't worth it, that he was wasting his youth sitting by the phone waiting for some chick to call. He'd tried to explain to his friend that Kagome wasn't just some chick. She was the love of his life and he wanted her back, so he would wait.
And then things took a sharp left turn. He'd met with Ayame one night for drinks after their criminal justice final, the class had been a pain in the ass all semester and they both wanted to celebrate that the hellish experience was finally over.
One tequila shot had turned into two, which quickly turned into four, and as they say the rest is history. He'd woken up the next morning naked with the red head in bed next to him, also sans clothing, and a guilt strong enough to knock the wind from his lungs. He'd ran to the bathroom and emptied his stomach into the toilet, convincing himself that his sickness was only from the alcohol.
Since then him and Ayame had been on a few dates and she'd spent the night a couple times. They weren't serious and they weren't exclusive, but Inuyasha couldn't help but feel like an asshole. Cause whenever he wasn't looking Ayame in the face he was thinking about Kagome, and wondering what she was doing, how her life was going. Sometimes he wondered if she'd found someone else and if that was the reason she never called. His heart lurched at the idea and his blood boiled at the thought of some other guy touching her, or making her happy, but then he remembered they'd broken up. He no longer had a claim on her and technically he was seeing someone else too.
Inuyasha sighed and rubbed his face, he needed to stop acting like Kagome was coming back. She'd clearly drawn her line in the sand and it was high time he accepted it. He was over feeling guilty for being a red blooded male. The girl he wanted didn't want him back and it was okay to move on, he had to for his own sanity.
Kagome looked at her phone, clutching the tiny device in her hand. She tossed the object across her bed and hugged her knees to her chest. She growled to herself, wanting to slap herself for being so dramatic. It should've been easy. His number was the first contact in her phone. She literally just had to open it, but she couldn't.
Every time she even contemplated it her heart raced and her breath came out in short pants. She'd get light headed and feel like she was seconds from passing out. Fear gripped her stomach so tight she thought she'd throw up, and then she'd put her phone down and her breath would even out and her heartbeat would slow.
She wanted to talk to him so bad it physically hurt, but she was afraid of rejection more than anything else.
'You'd deserve it. After the way you rejected him how else do you expect him to react?' Kagome silently questioned. Her mind traveled back to the last time she'd seen Inuyasha. To the day he'd practically begged her to take him back and she'd snubbed him. She hadn't lied to him, she did need space and she did need time to fully heal, but more than anything she was afraid. She was afraid to love him again so soon after he'd wounded her heart and so she'd kept him at a distance.
But now it'd been almost two months and she had probably missed her opportunity. She hadn't texted him or called, not because she didn't want to, but because she physically could not do it. Sango had told her that maybe she just needed to try to let him go. She was young and attractive and still had her whole life to find 'the one.' But Kagome had already found him and she'd let him slip through her fingers.
Her phone rang and her heart skipped a beat, she quickly shot across her bed and then was thoroughly disappointed when Sango's name flashed on her screen.
Kagome sighed, "hello?"
"No need to sound so excited Kagome, it's only been a few hours since you last saw me." Sango said, her tone full of obvious sarcasm.
"Sorry," Kagome said sincerely, "you know I have a hard time not getting my hopes up when I hear my phone ring."
"Yes I know, which is why we're going out tonight and getting drunk. I'm also not taking no for an answer." Kagome rubbed her face and mentally groaned. Sango had been trying to get her to go out for awhile and she was just never in the mood, and apparently Sango was tired of it.
"Seriously Kagome, stop depriving yourself. You have a right to be happy you know." Kagome knew her friend was right, but that didn't change the fact that moving on was easier said than done.
"Fine, I'll go." The girl said begrudgingly.
"That's my girl! One of Miroku's friends landed a job at a law firm in California, they're throwing him a going away party tonight. Be ready at 9."
Consenting to the plans Kagome ended the call and headed to her closet for something to wear. For some reason she couldn't shake the idea that this was going to be a really bad idea.
When Sango and Kagome arrived the party was in full swing. Miroku met them at the door, greeting his girlfriend with a chaste kiss and sending Kagome a friendly smile. The dark haired male was never rude to Kagome and always acknowledged her when they were in the same space, but she always got the distinct feeling that she was on his shit list.
To be honest Kagome couldn't really blame him. She vividly remembered the look in Inuyasha's eyes when he walked away from her that day. If Miroku ever made Sango look like that he'd be on her shit list too.
Meandering away from the couple Kagome made her way into the kitchen, she needed something to drink. Maybe she'd look less lonely with a beer in her hand.
"Here, you look like you need this." Turning Kagome took the cold beer from the boy in front of her.
"Thanks." She said politely.
"No problem, I'm Hojo by the way." He extended his hand and Kagome took it. She sized him up and had to admit he was a decent looking guy. His sandy brown hair fell over his forehead and slightly into his eyes, which where also a light brown. She thought about making up an excuse and trying to make a break for it, then she saw Sango give her a thumbs up, silently to encouraging her to keep talking to the boy.
"I'm Kagome. Nice to meet you."
"I'm gonna get another drink okay?" Inuyasha looked down as Ayame spoke to him. He nodded in response and watched her walk off into the crowd in search of more alcohol. Inuyasha continued to hang back on the wall, sipping his beer and watching the other party goers.
Three and a half years of college, and he still hated parties. The young man downed the rest of his drink, wishing he had told Ayame to grab him something on her trip to the Keg. He thought about waiting for her return, but in the end he decided to head into the kitchen. He knew Miroku had put some extra beers in the fridge and he knew the trip would only take him a second, surely he'd beat Ayame back to their spot.
As he walked into the small area his breath caught when he realized he wasn't alone. Standing in front of him looking exactly as he remembered, was the girl he'd been desperately trying to forget for the last two months. Her tight black jeans looked painted on, and her top stopped midway to her navel, exposing some of her taught stomach. Her heels gave her some height, her raven hair fell past her shoulders just as it always had.
He backed up slowly, she still hadn't noticed his presence and he wasn't really sure if he wanted her to acknowledge him. He looked at the guy who was leaning in too close for Inuyasha's comfort. His fist balled at his sides and he had to resist the strong urge to knock the guys teeth in.
"Inuyasha! There you are, I was looking all over for you."
Kagome stiffened at the sound of the name she hadn't been able to forget in two months. Turning away from Hojo, Kagome felt the blood rush away from her head and down to her feet. He was standing there, so close yet so far. Their eyes met and the world stopped turning.
"Inuyasha..." She whispered his name, and her feet unconsciously moved toward him. She only stopped when she noticed the red headed girl beside him. His eyes turned away from her when the small girl next him called his name again and handed him a beer. He took it and before he could turn back towards her, said red head raised herself on her toes and gave him a quick kiss.
Kagome suddenly felt like a cold bucket of water had been dumped over her head. She snapped out the trance she'd found herself in and took a step back. The kiss was small, nothing passionate, but it didn't need to be. The damage was already done. The action was so simple, so habitual, that Kagome realized her worst fear had come true.
Inuyasha had actually moved on.
The click of Kagome heels on the tile had Inuyasha turning to look at her once more. The look in her eyes killed him and he wished he could rewind the last 5 seconds. Ayame's kiss had been so quick and he hadn't time to stop or dodge her, before he felt the pressure of her lips on his.
Pulling her phone out of her back pocket, Kagome looked at the black screen and quietly said, "sorry I've got to take this." She dashed out the kitchen and Inuyasha was left looking at the empty space where Kagome had once been.
"So hot, but so weird." Hojo too made his way from the kitchen, he didn't have time for crazy.
"Inuyasha?"
"You kissed me." He said matter of factly, his attention eventually returning to her.
"Yeah so?" Ayame said not really sure where he was going with this. The scene she'd walked in the kitchen had been so bizarre. She didn't think she'd ever seen anyone look at someone the way Inuyasha had been looking at that girl, or the way that girl had been looking back at him. Then it clicked for her. She remembered the day Inuyasha had suddenly gone rushing out of class. She'd looked out the window and watched as he ran outside towards a dark haired girl, who was sitting at a bench studying.
The conversation had been intense and last only a few minutes before Inuyasha came slinking back into class, looking more broken and defeated than anyone ever should.
"That was Kagome." She said it more to herself than the boy in front of her, but the way he flinched at the name confirmed her suspicions. Ayame was a bit awe struck if she was being honest with herself. She'd heard a lot about Kagome, when her and Inuyasha had strictly been friends. Finally she'd come face to face with the girl who had stolen Inuyasha's heart and then never had the decency to give it back.
"Go to her." The red head finally said.
"Ayame?"
"You've been waiting for her Inuyasha, and here's your opportunity to finally try and get her back." She grabbed his hand and continued her speech, "you love her and I saw the way she looked at you, so go before I decide to be selfish and change my mind."
Inuyasha wiped a tear from her emerald eye and placed a lingering kiss to her cheek.
"Thank you." He kissed the back of her hand before he raced out of the kitchen, leaving Ayame to wipe her tears as she walked home.
Guess who's back, back again. Jazzy's back, tell a friend.
