In the early hours of the morning Francis was up earlier than usual and getting ready to leave. He had to go to work today and couldn't avoid it any longer because if he did we would get fired. Plus he already burned up most of his vacation days and he couldn't afford to miss any more days. He had kids to look after again. He paused for a moment and thought about it. It was a strange feeling to have kids to look after again. Francis hadn't been taking care of kids for a while and now that he was doing it again it felt strange as if he had just found out he was a father and he had to take care of his kids after nearly fifteen years. He got the thought out of his head. He was taking care of the boys now, have to get back into the routine.
Francis was about to leave when he passed by the guest room and saw the boys sleeping peacefully. This brought back some memories of watching them sleep when they were younger. Such happy times. He looked at his watch and saw that he still had some time and he could wake Alfred and tell him that he's on his own for his Eagle Scout stuff. He walked over to the boy's bed and shook him gently.
"Wake up mon fils." Alfred groaned and put his pillow over his head.
"Papa... I don't have to get up for another couple hours..."
"It's not about that. I have to go to work today, do you think you and your brother will be able to stay here alone?"
"Yea... sure... have a party..." He waved his hand in a dismissive manner and then fell back asleep somewhere in his sentence. Francis chuckled and pat Alfred's head. Once he finally got ready his apartment door opened and he saw Antonio coming in wearing his pajamas. The blond tried not to kick his friend out and make him knock like a normal human being but he was trying to get the hell out of his place and get to work.
"Hola mi amigo! Where are you off to this morning?"
"I'm actually going back to work today because I burned out most of my vacation time with the investigation and Alfred was in the hospital for a week. I really can't afford to miss any more time nor can I afford to be late. Why are you here?"
"The office is closed up for a few days so I have off and I figured that I should visit Mateo and meet Alfred."
"They're asleep now, but if you want you can stay here like a creepy stalker and wait for them to wake up." Antonio flipped his friend off and sat on the couch. Francis laughed and grabbed his keys.
"Be a good Uncle Toni and don't get my sons into trouble!" That prompted an attempt at throwing a pillow at the man's head. Antonio stretched to wake himself up more and flipped the TV on to watch the news.
A few hours later Matthew woke up to hear the TV on in the living room. Dad must be watching the news downstairs. Matthew thought as he got out of bed and looked around his room. It felt so unfamiliar but then Matthew remembered where he was. He was at Papa's apartment. The teen had only been here for a few days and his surroundings were still unfamiliar. In the day he would remember where he was but at night he would make himself believe that he was back at home with Arthur.
Dad. That's the one thing that struck Matthew's mind. Ever since hearing his brother's words of doubting Arthur's real reason for letting them live with Francis it made the teen start to get skeptical about what he was told. Matthew was never a huge skeptic. In fact he would always believe things if there was something to back something up. He thought about Arthur's face the last time he saw him and the day Alfred landed himself in the hospital.
Obviously he had been crying that day but Arthur said he was going to get help for his alcohol addiction. Matthew didn't want to get his hopes too high on that possibility. The British man had said he would do it so many times before but every time he would go back to the bar and sometimes, if it got that bad, he'd hit them. But then again there was the day he last saw Arthur. The man looked sad yet happy at the same time. Maybe they were being abandoned after all. No. After they were left with one of Arthur's friends that time, Arthur said he would never abandon them again. Matthew cleared his head of the thoughts. There was no reason to doubt anything. Dad just let them stay with Papa so the three of them could make up for lost time. That's all.
Matthew walked out of his and Alfred's room and into the living room. A gleam of excitement flashed in his eyes when he saw Antonio laying on the couch. He ran to the man and hugged him right there. Antonio hugged back ruffling the teen's hair.
"Hola Mateo! Happy to see your Uncle Toni, huh?"
"Oui. It's been a while since I've seen you! Why are you here? I thought you'd be at work."
"I should be but the office is closed for a few days so I decided I'd visit you and meet your brother."
"Alfred's still asleep but he should be awake in a few minutes." Antonio lightly laughed then got up to make breakfast for the boys. He'd always wanted to meet Francis' family ever since he first heard about them. He already met Matthew and he was going to meet Alfred but it was Arthur he really wanted to meet. Ever since Francis had been friends with each other he really wanted to meet Arthur. After Francis had gotten kicked out of his home Antonio wanted to go over to his old place and smack his friend's husband but that wouldn't have solved anything. Plus it was kind of silly to even want to do that and he probably would have gotten arrested.
"*yawn* Mattie! Papa went to work so its up to one of us to make breakfast! It might not be me!"
"You don't have to shout Alfred! I was already up." Alfred looked at his brother and cracked some of his bones making Matthew jump at the sound.
"What was that for hoser?!"
"Just making sure you were really up." Alfred laughed and then looked at the figure in the kitchen. He instantly cowered and hugged his brother.
"Dude... There's a stranger in our kitchen..."
"That's Papa's friend Antonio!" Alfred nodded in understanding with his mouth in an 'o' formation. But then the name Antonio triggered some familiarity in his mind.
"Wait... is that the Uncle Toni you told me about that picked you up in the alleyway when you left home?" Matthew nodded. Antonio turned and threw a smile at Alfred over his shoulder.
"Nice to meet you Alfred! Call me Uncle Toni!" Alfred smiled and tried to fall asleep again but Matthew kept lightly kicking his side each time he did. Damn! If it weren't for Eagle Scouts then Alfred would still be asleep in his warm bed. But no. He had to be up and out of bed early today. The blond knew he should be taking a rest like the doctor said he should but Eagle Scouts come first! When breakfast was ready and done with Alfred was dressed and out the door.
He walked around the building and so far none of them needed any help. At this rate Alfred would never be able to get his last few hours in! No one in this building needed any sort of help. He was walking up the stairs when he saw the door to Francois' apartment. Papa told him not to go but Alfred's curiosity grew stronger. Maybe he could reach into the heart of the stranger and find what was so relatable. He could already tell that he was depressed about something but what is it was about was never clear but Alfred felt a connection.
Slowly he went to the door, his heart pounding in fear of what would happen if Papa were to catch him going to the one apartment he was never to go to. Francis would be furious beyond hell butAlfred didn't think it was fair for his father to judge this man like that. He knocked on the door and waited for a response but nothing came. He lifted his fist to knock again but the man answered the door with a cigarette in his mouth and a paper in his hand.
"What the hell do you want brat?" Francois spat. The Eagle Scout decided to ignore it and put a cheeky grin on his face.
"My name is Alfred and I'm with the Eagle Scouts. I have to get in a few hours of community service for the troop to fill up this year's quota for 14-year olds and I was wondering if you could have anything for me to do around your home." Alfred said actually keeping the grin on his face. The older Frenchman looked at the younger teen with unamused eyes. The line sounded rehearsed but the kid looked determined. Also he could get out of doing his chores.
"Fine. Get in here you little Eagle Scout fucker. I got a list of chores I was gonna do but I figure you can do 'em." Alfred went into the apartment and paused in his tracks when he saw what shape the apartment was in.
The walls were covered in dirt, grime, and even some food. The floor was covered in clothes and some more food, and even some dangerous weapons on the floor like a couple guns and a knife. Is it legal for a human being to live in this?! Alfred mentally questioned as he looked on to the rest of it. When he went to the kitchen he saw that there were dirty dishes and utensils in the sink and on the counter. There was even more food on the floor and Alfred thought he saw a rat or two dashing through. He slightly jumped and backed into a wall. Damn... I'm gonna be here for hours... He thought as he turned to Francois who was waving the list teasingly.
"Still want to take the job Eagle Scout?"
"Give me the list old man." The blue-eyed teen snatched the list from his hands.
"Good. I'll be in my bedroom if you need me, just give me a shout." Francois slipped out of the kitchen and a door slam sounded which Alfred guessed to be the door to the crazy Frenchman's room. Alfred should have listened to his father... but no matter! He had Eagle Scout hours to fill!
A few hours later Alfred managaed to get the apartment clean. It was tough but he made it. As he was dusting one of the shelves he came across a photo that took a stab at his curiosity. One of the people in the photo looked like Francois but there were other people who looked like Matthew, Arthur, and even himself. Alfred's duplicate had a tan as well as red hair and he was wearing sunglasses. He was wearing blue jeans, a white T-shirt, and a bomber jacket that rivaled to that of Alfred's own. Matthew's duplicate had longer hair than that of his brother's hair and it was about the same color. The duplicate was wearing a plaid shirt and blue jeans while holding a hockey stick in his hands. Arthur's duplicate had light blond hair with a little bit of pink and was wearing a pink sweater vest with a blue bowtie and khakiswhile he was holding a tray of cupcakes with a seemingly homicidal grin plastered on his face. Alfred laughed at how much his own family looked like everyone in the picture.
Suddenly the photo was snatched out of his hands. Alfred turned to see Francois' face which was teeming with anger, he could almost see the steam coming out of his ears. Growling, Francois grabbed Alfred by the collar and pushed him into a wall.
"What the hell were you doing with this picture?" He asked in a low tone.
"I was just looking at it... Please don't hurt me..." Something in the kid's voice made Francois widen his eyes as he let go of Alfred and lean against a wall. Slidding down on the wall he put his head in his hands as he crumpled up the photo and tossed it somewhere else. So many memories came form that line. Papa! Please! Don't hurt me! Francois fought the urge to start to cry.
"F-Francois...? Are you okay? I'm sorry I looked at the photo... It's just that they looked like my family a lot."
"If there's anyone that looks like you is my son. Give me your paper, I'll sign it then you can leave." Alfred wasted no time getting out a pen and paper and letting Francois sign it. When he was finished Alfred hurried out of the apartment. The door closed and Alfred pressed his forehead against it. Mr. Francois... You certainly are one mystery I'm gonna solve... Alfred thought and then someone grabbed his shoulder. He turned around to see the Arthur look-alike he saw in the photo. The man wasn't smiling like he was in the picture. He was frowning.
"I didn't mean to startle you. Is the man who lives in the apartment still in?"
"Yes sir. I was just leaving." Alfred hurried out. The man looked at the boy dashing away. Francois probably scared the poor thing half to death. He walked into the apartment like he owned the place and took a moment to look at the apartment. It was clean. Last time he had been here the apartment was screwed up and unclean. He looked at Francois on the floor silently brooding.
"Francois!" Said man looked up to see a former "roommate" of his.
"What the hell do you want Oliver?" The man, known as Oliver, scoffed and threw a package of papers his way. Francois picked them up and opened the package to see divorce papers. Francois could never deny that he didn't see this coming. With the way he and Oliver were going about these past few months it was to be expected but never once in those months did Francois imagine it would be like this.
"Really Oliver? After all we've been through. You want to end it here?"
"Take a look at yourself! Take a look at us and your sons! Before they got taken away they were petrified of you! I got petrified of you! You just aren't safe to be around anymore and I can't live with that and I can't have our boys living with you!"
"How are they?"
"Just fine without you. I'm trying to get them back." Oliver spat, "That's how we've been. Look. I just need you to sign those and I'll come back in the morning to pick them up." With that Oliver left. Francois looked at the divorce papers and put them on the coffee table. How did my life come to this? He thought to himself as he laid on the couch and stared at the reflection in the television. All he saw was a broken man who had everything and took it all for granted.
Alfred was at the dinner table picking at his food while Antonio and Matthew were eating. He couldn't get the image of the Frenchman out of his head. He was probably alone with that Arthur look-alike doing God knows what! If Francois could almost get that violent with Alfred then what could he and the other British man be doing? He didn't want to be thinking about it. Besides, he could never tell Francis he went to the apartment.
"What's wrong Alfred? Do you not like your food?" Alfred looked up at Antonio who was showing great worry in his face and then back down to the plate of food.
"I'm not hungry..." Alfred mumbled and pushed his plate aside.
"If you're not that hungry then could you at least eat a little bit of it so I don't have to lie to your father that you ate?" The response to that was Alfred taking one bite and then dashing off to his room. Matthew started to wonder what happened to his brother while he was out today. Something had to have happened otherwise Alfred would have been eating his food.
The remaining two at the table finished and were washing the dishes when the phone rang. Antonio picked up and answered.
"Hola! Francis Bonnefroy's apartment, how may I help?"
"Why the hell are you still at my apartment?"
"Hey Francis! How is your first day back at work?"
"Terrible. This one lady sent back her food twenty times saying that I didn't properly prepare her food. About the twenty-first time she finally kept it! I'm on my break now and I wanted to know how the boys were doing."
"They're doinig just fine! Alfred did his Eagle Scout thing and he ate. We just finished up and They're off to bed."
"Ok then. I'm going to be home in about on hour or two. You can leave them alone if you want."
"I think I'll wait. See you when you get here."
Francis got back to the apartment two hours later seeing his friend sleeping on the couch. For some reason he didn't have the guts to wake him. He placed a blanket over his friend who snuggled into the warmth. Chuckling softly, Francis moved on to the room where Alfred and Matthew were sleeping. They were both sound asleep. A smile crept on to Francis' face. He may have had a hellish day but all that mattered to him was that the boys were well taken care of.
He went to his room and took his laptop out to start looking for therapists. He said he was going to start looking for therapists that would take him and the boys. So far he hadn't had too much luck since they were so damn expensive! Seriously?! The blond was surfing the web for a good one until he came across Dr. Toris Laurinaitis. He was a young therapist but as said int he ad he could get the job done. Francis bookmarked the page and decided to email him when he could. Closing the laptop and putting it away, Francis felt his eyelids growing heavy and crashed down on the pillow falling asleep.
