Subtracting
Tally looked pensively at the pills. They were incased in little recyclable bubbles. She flipped the package over, barely reading the large block letters that any Pretty could read, 'Calorie Purgers'.
She couldn't help remember a story that Shay had told her, while they were living with the Smoke. The old fashion magazines had pictures of girls who were skinny to the point of being ugly. Shay had said that they had some kind of disease. The starving disease.
Tally felt her stomach ache with hunger pangs, a familiar feeling and sighed. She was skinny now, that was her new 'ugly' name. Skinny.
Slowly she walked over to the mirror and looked at her reflection. She felt herself go cold as she realized how thin she was. She turned sideways and knew that she was as small as some of the girls in the magazines.
But Tally knew she wasn't sick. She didn't eat to stay bubbly. The calorie purgers kept her alert. She and Zane knew what they were doing. They were beating the operation. Staying bubbly.
Tally sighed and punched out a pill, the tiny bubble encasing it crumpling. She opened her mouth and took swallowed, closing her eyes in satisfaction, the pill tasted like mint, pleasant, like everything in Prettyville.
After five minutes, she punched out another pill, taking another, just barely feeling the lightheadedness from eating the first purger.
Another five minutes another pill. Now Tally had energy to sit up, her mind was crystal clear. She remembered everything from Ugly days.
In an hour as the feeling started to fade, she took another pill. Shocked how empty the package had become. She was subtracting pills from the package. Six, five, four, three… She kept subtracting pills, subtracting her life.
