Lee arrived to his and Kara's quarters pretty late. Actually, he had been avoiding going there, afraid of how she would act around him. Helo had spent the last couple of hours trying to convince him to go back to his quarters, however, he was not successful. But at the moment, there he was, standing in front of the open hatch. He took a deep breath and entered the cabin.
The whole room was dark; Kara was probably sleeping in the bedroom. Wait, am I supposed to take the sofa? Lee wondered. Maybe it would be weird having the two of them sleeping in the same bed during a fight… He entered the bedroom anyway, in order to get his stuff. He could see her lying in the bed completely wrapped with the covers. She still had a fever, he concluded. That would justify the cold.
"I'm sorry," she murmured from the bed, taking him by surprise. He had assumed she was asleep. "I'm sorry about what I said this morning."
He somehow knew that she meant it. Kara Thrace didn't apologize often, but in these few times she did, she truly meant it. He didn't respond as he undressed his uniform.
"Okay, I get it Lee. You're not gonna make this easy," she continued after a couple of minutes of silence. "I deserve it."
"Shut up, Kara," Lee told her. He moved to the bed and lay by her side, turning his face to hers. She really looked bad: pale, dry lips… But what really caught his attention was the fact that the vulnerable look, the one she had in their first night together, was back.
"I'm really sorry I hurt you when I said that I didn't need you to take care of me," she stated. "The truth is that I do."
Lee knew that must be difficult for her. He could see in her eyes that she was afraid. Afraid he wouldn't forgive her. But how could he not? He needed her.
"I shouldn't have pulled the rank on you either," he finally said. It was true. He had used his commander position to boss her around…
"Hey, if you want to play 'I'm the guilty one', you can take all the blame, 'cause I'm not feeling like fighting for it," she tried to joke. Lee responded with a small smile. Her face turned serious again a moment later. "Helo says I'm fighting you because I'm not used to being taken care of. I promise I'll try to stop but you have to be patient with me."
"I will," he assured her, reaching for her hand behind the covers. "We survived out first fight, didn't we?"
Kara smiled. "So that means I'm off the hook? Just like that?" she inquired surprised. She had imagined that he would take a lot longer to forgive her and possibly still act kind of cold towards her for a few days. That's me, not him, she concluded.
"My conscience doesn't let me be mad at a woman in her sickbed," he replied, pulling her closer.
She sighed in relief against his chest. She still had a lot to work, a long fight ahead of her to get rid of her issues but at least Lee would be fighting by her side.
He kissed her forehead. "Gods, Kara, you're so hot," he told her worriedly.
"Thanks," she said jokingly in order to let him know that she was not feeling that bad.
"I meant it literally," he stated. "Did you take your meds?"
"Yes," she replied with a sigh. Let him take care of you, she told herself. It is the first step. "But it's not that bad. The fever was higher this morning."
"You sure?" he asked doubtfully. For all he knew she might just be pretending to be alright so he wouldn't worry.
She sighed. "I am good enough to be having a conversation with you, aren't I? I barely coughed since I started to take the antibiotics so take it easy," she told him.
"I'm staying here tomorrow, anyway," he told her. He asked himself if he was pushing it with Kara but he really didn't want to spend another day in the CIC wondering if she was alright.
Don't fight it, Kara told herself, dismissing the huge urge to tell him to stop babying her. "Okay," she murmured.
He smiled in relief. She was letting him in again. "You know what? Let's sleep now. We'll have plenty of time to talk tomorrow," he stated, pulling her closer. Their conversation was far from over. He was planning to ask her about that story related to her dad that Helo had mentioned but pushing it today was probably not a good idea.
"Damn," Kara murmured out of the blue.
"What?" he inquired.
"It's our first fight and I'm too sick for the make up sex," she said.
He chuckled. "Don't worry. We just have to do it extra hot the next time," he told her. "Gods know we'll have plenty of other times."
Kara sighed. Other fights were bound to happen, after all, they were Starbuck and Apollo, full of drama, issues and a sick need to be in control. Others would see their relationship as a clear sign of insanity; they saw it as a challenge. With that thought in her mind, Kara quickly fell in a dreamless sleep.
--
When Kara woke up in the following morning, Lee's spot in the bed was empty. On top of his pillow, there was a small note: Went to get breakfast. I'll be back soon. Love you. She smiled to herself – maybe having him taking care of her wouldn't be so bad after all.
Kara thanked the gods once more for Lee's forgiveness and made herself a promise to do all she could not to screw up this time – she could easily say that she had never been that happy in her whole life. Even though the man could be pushy, bossy and a royal pain in the ass sometimes, he was her home now. What a change, she thought to herself. One year earlier that situation would sound like a joke.
She was too distracted with her thoughts to notice Lee entering the room.
"Hey," he said, kneeling by her side of the bed.
She rolled to face him. "Hey," she responded.
"How are you feeling?" he asked, putting his hand on her forehead in order to feel it. "The fever is higher."
"It's because I didn't take the meds yet," she told him. It felt nice having someone taking care of her like that; it was almost as of Lee was part of the medicine itself, making her feel a lot better. She immediately called herself stupid for picking a fight with him just because of it.
"Breakfast in bed?" Lee asked her. He was planning to push her father's subject after breakfast, so, as her reaction was completely unpredictable to him, the best would be spoiling her before he touched that matter.
She frowned. Her appetite still sucked but she couldn't take the pills with an empty stomach and if she didn't take the pills, not only her appetite would get a lot worse but also her whole body… "Do I have to take it at all?" she tried.
"Well, I found Helo in the mess hall," Lee started. "He asked me to inform you that if you didn't eat everything I brought you, he'd tell me all the embarrassing stories of your childhood. I wouldn't mind hearing them but I'd rather have you eat breakfast."
Helo knew plenty of embarrassing stories about her; that was a fact. But wouldn't tell, would he? She thought. She hoped that he was aware she'd simply kill him if he spilled any of them. But once again, Agathon was under the impression that he could take her… "I'll eat. But just because I need to take the meds," she said. "And tell your frakwit of an XO that if he breathes a single word…" She trailed off. "Well, let's just say there will be a lot of blood spilled."
Lee laughed at her threaten. At least her sense of humor – he seriously hoped that she was joking – was still intact…
Half an hour later, they were both done with the breakfast and, once again, Kara felt like she had been eating paper the whole time… She wondered if it was because of her lack of appetite or because the natural taste of the food in the fleet. One would think its quality would improve now that they had access to the natural resources of a planet, but it didn't.
At the moment, they were both sitting up in bed and she was resting her head in his shoulder.
"So…" Lee started. He was really itching to know what had happened to her father. Helo had made it sound pretty serious. "Yesterday when I talked to Helo, he said something that made me curious."
She looked up at him. "What?" Had the frakker already started spilling the embarrassing stories? she wondered, already plotting revenge in her head.
"Can you tell me more about your dad?" he requested in a low, almost fearful, voice.
Kara pulled back several inches away from him and gave him a look that he identified as a mixture of resentment and sadness. He immediately regretted asking it at all as he knew for sure that he had touched a particularly painful nerve.
A/N: Here is the new chapter. Well, my sister suggested that I gave a preview of next chapter (which is not finished yet) to my reviewers, as I'm not sure if I will be able to finish it in time to post it this weekend due to college initiation and a short trip. So, those who review this chapter, will receive a small preview of what will happen next chapter. Of course, if you don't want it let me know in your review. Sorry about the delay of next chapter, I promise I'll try to post it as soon as I can. Review!
P.S: I noticed that I completly forgot to name the chapters, so I'm doing it now.
