AN: I apologize for not finishing this sooner; I've been busy with a lot of things lately, so again, I'm so sorry for not updating quicker. I will be guiding this group through a few more worlds before all this is over, so if you want, stay along for the ride! :) Just follow me and keep updated on my latest (maybe not so often) updates. Thanks for reading, and as always, Star Wars, Doctor Who, and Hogwarts are not mine, sadly.
As my ship hurled itself towards the last coordinates it had logged, I paced around my control console. I had a slightly elevated walkway, enough so I could work on him (my TARDIS) from underneath if I needed to. He was in great condition, so it wasn't wholly necessary to do so. Aryn held onto the last lever she'd pulled, looking at the screen and the journey we were taking.
"I was never here to see this," she murmured, her voice catching. "It was always—"
"Kaal," a voice replied from the hallway. Neville had let himself out, apparently. "From what I could tell, he was a soldier, yeah?"
"Yes," I said. "He and Aryn both. What were you, before becoming a professor?" I was incredibly curious as to how he and the others had gotten to know death so intimately.
"In my world, I was an Auror. I hunted evil men and women, and brought them to justice for their crimes."
"So you were kinda like a soldier, then?" Neville's eye twitched. I guess he didn't like the comparison.
"Essentially; we used wands and fists instead of your weapons." I saw that he had put his robe away, and wore regular clothes.
"Is that why you, Harry, and the Headmistress get concerned whenever fighting is involved? I've seen how you react to death, to fighting, and surviving. What happened?" Neville's eyes got misty all of a sudden, and I felt horrible. Maybe I shouldn't have asked. Maybe what had happened had been so bad, he didn't want to talk about it. "I'm sorry," I rushed. "I didn't mean to—"
"We had a war; it was an evil wizard, probably one of the most horrible men in all of our history." Neville took a deep breath, probably to steady his already turbulent emotions. "He had terrorized families for a few years before I was born, and when I was about a year, we thought he had died. Harry, the man you met earlier, survived his killing curse, and we thought the man had died because of it." He was about to go on when my TARDIS beeped that it was starting to land at the base. My eyes apologized for the interference.
"Perhaps we can talk about it later," I returned, getting ready for the plethora of questions that was about to swarm me. "We need to let the base know what happened." I paused, then thought about where we were. "You might want to get your robes back on," I mentioned, motioning to the outside of the TARDIS. "It's kinda cold." Neville went to grab his robes while Aryn and I braced ourselves for the onslaught of queries. We both nodded to each other, then opened the doors, and stepped out.
Yarek was there, along with Dassia and Trak. Considering their abilities, it didn't surprise me that they felt my presence again. "Hello, again." From the emotions welling up in me to Aryn's face, I could see they knew something was wrong. I swallowed a lump in my throat. There was no easy way to say this. "Kaal—"
"Has passed away," Dassia finished. She looked at Yarek and Trak, a brief look of sorrow shared between the three.
"Tragic, this is. Inform the Commander, we must. Have the body, do you?" Neville showed up with the coffin floating in front of him. Yarek's big green ears twitched. "Introduced, we have not been." I could see that it took Neville a second to process Yarek's words.
"Hello, sir. My name is Neville. I fought with Kaal in his final minutes, and he was a great man. I am sorry to be here in such grave circumstances." I motioned Neville to follow me, and the entire group flanked the coffin. Neville was using his wand to levitate it. Yarek, Trak, and Dassia all looked at Neville and his wand. They seemed perturbed that he was using it. We reached the medical bay; Jay'la looked up, momentarily happy until she saw the coffin behind me. Her smile vanished, and she looked to see who the occupant was. After finding Aryn, she knew.
"I'll notify the commander. He'll want to know." We stood silently, waiting for him to come to the bay and see for himself that one of his men had indeed died. I saw his dark hair and clothes before his face. When he lifted his face, I could see lines around his eyes. I'm not sure he expected anyone to come back in a body bag. I distinctly remember telling him this could happen. He stared at me, his dark eyes unreadable.
"So Kaal died. How did it happen?" It was Neville who spoke up, who told everyone there what Kaal had done. How he had saved hundreds of children, fighting the Sontarans until they had taken him out. He then looked at me, and I told them about his last words, how he had been so brave and selfless.
"He wanted his family to know that he loves them." Commander Gage and Jay'la exchanged a look that clearly told me that in particular was going to be hard on them. "Commander, why did he tell me that? To let his family know?"
"It's because he has a little girl and a little boy," Jay'la interjected. Her arms were crossed. She looked away. I didn't know. I hadn't bothered to ask. He had children? Then why did he—? It dawned on me. He wanted to protect the children at Hogwarts because he understood what it meant to be a parent worried about their kids. He did it so that their parents could hold them tight, and thank whoever they worshipped for sparing their lives. And now—now his own children would have to grow up without him, but would know that he had saved so many people doing his job. My eyes started to water. I had to turn around for a second to slip out a few tears. I turned back, my eyes slightly puffy. "I'm so sorry; I never meant for him to—for this to happen at all. He insisted on coming with us."
Gage smiled faintly. "He would have, especially since children were involved." He took a deep breath, and stood up straight. "Well, thank you for bringing his body and Aryn back. Now, if it's all the same to you, we should probably get back to work. Aryn, Jay'la," he said, motioning them to follow him.
"But, sir, that was only our first trip." The Commander gave me an incredulous look.
"You went to one destination, and got my troop killed?" he seethed. He pointed a finger at Aryn. "Back to your bunk, Decina. You're not going anywhere near that—whatever she is. Good riddance, Chancellor. Never visit again." He started marching out, then noticed that Aryn hadn't moved. "Decina! MOVE. NOW."
Her jaw was set, and her cold eyes glared at him. "No."
"As your Commanding Officer—"
"As nothing. I'm done with this." She ripped off her service insignia, handed him her blaster, and stood next to me. "I resign, and I'm going again with the Chancellor."
"You don't have to do this," I muttered to her. I didn't want anything bad to happen to her. She elbowed me slightly.
"I want to." Commander Gage leveled his gaze at the both of us while Neville was looking around at everything. I could tell he'd never been outside of England before. He glared at the both of us, his jaw tight.
"I have to tell your family about this," he replied. Aryn shook her head.
"I'll tell them myself. You don't have to worry about me being in the way any more, Commander. I can do this," she told him. The way she said it, it sounded more like she was trying to convince herself than him. "Goodbye, everyone. I'll see you when it's time to come back." She smiled, lips tight, and walked back into the TARDIS. I gave a feeble wave, and headed back too, Neville following me. The doors shut behind us, and I let out a sigh. My hand rested on the lever meant to start the engine, but I paused for a moment. To remember Kaal, to remember his sacrifice. A hand grabbed my shoulder, and I instinctively twisted it to disarm the person. I dropped the wrist after realizing it was Neville. He winced at the pain, but shook it off. "Sorry; should have known you'd have a fight reflex. The good thing is, we did what was right in bringing Kaal back. How about we remember him by going somewhere new and exciting?" I indulged in a small smile, and nodded. New world, here we come.
