Kara opened and closed her mouth. Tigh, the Chief, Sam, Tory and Ellen. No, that couldn't… Maybe Tory, she had never liked the woman, to speak the truth. And Ellen too, though she was slowly growing in Kara's consideration due to her actions on the algae planet. But the other three? They had been the leaders of the resistance in New Caprica! That was just so frakked up! "She's lying," Kara said.
D'Anna shook your head. "I can't lie to you now. Our debt to humanity is too deep for me to lie to you now! You can check if you want. Test their DNA. You will find three specific abnormalities in their chromosomes."
She sounds too sure to be lying, the old man though. But what that meant. His best friend… and his wife. They were cylons. "I think she's telling the truth…"
"But what do we do now?" Kara asked him. "How do we tell them?"
How did you tell someone something like that? 'Hey, how're you doing? Funny thing, did you know you're a cylon? Life sucks, doesn't it?' So. Frakked. Up.
"We don't," Lee suggested, turning to the two of them. It was the only exit he could think of. Not telling them a thing. What reason did they have to tell them? What good would it make? "You heard her. They too human. Telling them they were cylons would crush them. Gods know how it would. So we won't. We keep it a secret. It is better if they never know…"
"Commander Adama is right," D'Anna agreed from her bed. "Knowing would destroy them. I've seen cylons with sleeper missions breaking down when they found out their real nature. Boomer is one of them. Ignorance will be the best choice."
The Admiral hated to admit it but the toaster was right. Lee's idea was the right one to follow. He turned to Kara, who still looked troubled. "Can you keep it a secret, Starbuck?"
She thought of all the moment she had spent with this people. She thought of her friend, Erin, who was in love with one of them. Who had a child with one of them. The five themselves wouldn't be the only ones crushed – those who loved them would be too… It was for the better good to keep them away from the truth. "Yes," she said.
"It's settled then," Lee said. "For all effects and purposes, the final five were killed beyond resurrection long ago. We'll stick to that story. "
"One more thing," D'Anna said. "I can tell you where Earth is. It was revealed to me too. Your brothers and sisters wait for you in there."
"Earth?" Adama asked in absolute disbelief. "You'll lead us there?"
"I will. But I wanted to ask for something in return. I need to return to my people. To guide them into the right path or they won't stop. I need to save what's left of their souls. Maybe god will forgive us this way…"
The Admiral shook his head. "Impossible," he said. "You know too much now. About Earth…"
"Make me forget it, then," she said desperately. "The Eight you call Athena knows it is possible. Erase my memories of knowing Earth's after I lead you there. I give you my word that I will do anything I can to keep my people away from you. If I don't they will just keep coming. The attacks will never end and they will end up decimating you for good. Earth too."
She was asking for too much. Adama was willing to believe her about her revelation but letting her just go was too much. What if the whole thing had been a play? He was putting their faith in the hands of a cylon who had never given them a reason to be trusted before that day. "I can't make that promise now," he said. "Maybe after you take us to Earth."
The cylon nodded. "That's all I can ask for."
"Just one more thing," the Admiral inquired out of curiosity. "What happened to Baltar? We haven't heard from him since the exodus."
For the first time that evening, D'Anna chuckled. "He's living in his own paradise in a basestar with two sixes, I believe. I heard he impregnated one of them. Or both, I'm not sure. Maybe I can talk the others to get Gaius back to you, if you wish."
"No, thank you," The Admiral said immediately. The last thing he wanted was to ever see the guy again. "We are more than happy to let you have him."
---
"It is a trap!" Saul Tigh grumbled through the comms to Adama, who was now in Pegasus's CIC. "There is probably a whole cylon fleet waiting for us in that place she said Earth was. She's a toaster. What else can you expect?!"
The Admiral flinched. It had been extremely uncomfortable to address his XO at first, knowing what he really was. But hearing him say that was just weird… At that moment, he saw Lee had been the wisest by suggesting keeping the final five's identities a secret – Saul Tigh would be the first one to drop dead with the shock. He wiped those thoughts of his head and cleared his throat. "Athena volunteered to go ahead in a recon mission – Helo is going with her to avoid second guessing. If anything is wrong, we will shove D'Anna out of an airlock right away."
"I don't know, Bill…"
"I do," he said. "And I am the one who gets the calls here. If Athena and Helo communicate that the location D'Anna gave us is clear, we'll go there. Just handle things around Galactica while I'm gone – I need to stay here until the Agathons get back from the recon mission. If that place is actually Earth. I'll go to back to Galactica. I've always picture myself in the Old lady for the final jump."
He heard Tigh sigh. "If you say so… I just hope this whole thing doesn't get us all killed."
"Me too," Adama said before hanging up.
He was the same. Saul Tigh was just the same as he had ever been. He couldn't bring himself to think of his friend as a toaster. So, he had a bunch of implants in his brain – didn't seem to keep him from hating the cylons. Why should it matter? He held on to that wise part of his mind or else he would go mad. He wished Laura was there. He needed to tell her – at least to her… She was his confident, she would understand.
"Sir," Hoshi said. "Helo communicates they are ready to jump."
"Tell them to wait," Adama said. The first thing he had done after leaving the Life Station was to summon Laura, not only because she was the president but also because he wanted her there by his side at that moment. "The president isn't here ye--."
"Actually, I am right here," Roslin announced, stepping into the room and walking to Adama's side. They smiled at each other for a moment. "You can tell them to go…" she murmured.
He nodded and cleared his throat. Finally, the moment. "Tell them to go and find Earth for us."
Hoshi nodded and transmitted the orders to the pilots through the wireless.
"It's now or never, isn't it?" Kara whispered to him. She had absolutely refused to go back to her quarters to 'lose all the fun', as she had put it. So now she was standing between her husband and her father-in-law, holding her daughter with one arm, as the other was pretty much useless for now due to having been shot. Jamie was asleep, despite all the commotion in the room – little did she know that in a few hours they might have reached the end of their journey.
"I believe it is, Starbuck," the Admiral replied.
"The raptor has jumped," Lee announced, pointing at the DRADIS monitor. "Now, we wait…"
And the minutes passed – 1…2…3. Kara was sure that if her one of her arms wasn't holding Jamie and the other just couldn't reach her mouth, she would be biting her nails raw. Or punching someone's face.
4…5…6. The Admiral and the President laced their hands in a gesture of common support in that tense moment.
At some point, Jamie was passed to her father's arms where she kept sleeping peacefully, leaving her mother's healthy arm free. Kara unconsciously started tapping her fingers on the tactical table, receiving several glares minutes later because of the annoying sound she was making.
"Stop it," Lee murmured to her. "You're driving everyone crazy."
"I can't help it," she replied.
He watched her bite her lip as looked at the DRADIS monitor – she was nervous. Frak, who wouldn't be right now? "It will be fine," Lee told her, wrapping one arm around her waist. "If she lied… well… we'll just keep looking. We won't stop until we find Earth or some other place to stay."
"We'll get there today," Kara replied surely, closing her hand in a fist to keep herself to start the tapping again. Her guts had been telling her that since she had came back from the algae planet. She knew she shouldn't get her hopes up because she would be crushed if things didn't turn out like she expected but that feeling was so strong…
Moments later, Hoshi started to murmur something to the wireless and looked up. "Helo and Athena's raptor is contacting us again. They want speak to you, Admiral."
"Put them on the speakers," he said, a ceremonial expression all over his face. His hold on Laura's hand intensified.
"Sir, this is… this is just… I'm not sure how to put this in words," Helo's voice came through the wireless. "We found it. Earth! It's so… blue."
Kara chuckled. Describing Earth as 'blue' after all the trouble they had gone through in order to find it was something a little bizarre. Only Helo would make an analogy like that one. She looked at Lee, a triumphant smile on her face. "I told you," she mouthed to him.
"I believed in you," he replied. Oblivious to the rest of the conversation between the Admiral and the pilots, he kissed the top of his daughter's head – she would get to grow up on a real planet. She would get to live in a real house and go to a real school and see the sky, run though the hills… whatever she wanted.
"…Admiral, Earth contacted us as soon as we jumped here. Their president sends a message to you," Sharon was saying. "Do you want me to repeat it to you right now?"
"Go ahead, Athena," the Old Man told her.
"'Welcome, brothers. Make yourselves at home. We've been waiting for you to come'," she said.
A wave of clapping sounded through the entire CIC, followed by triumphant screams like the first runner of a race had just reached the finish line. The noise was unbelievable. They hadn't even made the announcement to the rest of the fleet.
"Let's get out of here," Lee suggested to his wife in the moment he saw his father kissing Roslin. He really didn't want to see that.
Starbuck rolled her eyes and kissed him fully in the lips. "Let them have a little fun, Flyboy."
---
On their way to the mess hall, Erin, Sam and Nate heard loud cheers coming from the CIC. The two grownups looked at each other with an eyebrow raised as if asking what the hell was going on.
Before they could verbalize the question, the hatch opened and Kara and Lee exited it, a fussy Jamie being held by the latter.
"Is there some party we didn't get invited to?" Sam questioned them.
Hearing his voice, Kara flinched. Frak, he was a cylon too… How was she supposed to act normal around him knowing he was a cylon? Well, to be accurate she had to admit he was the product of a failed attempt to create a cylon…
"You're awfully silent," Erin pointed. "What's going on? Is the clapping about something we're not supposed to know?"
Lee was the first to talk – he was always the one to get himself together first. "You'll know what the clapping is about soon," he said. "So… you two… together… and no fighting," Lee said. He could tell he was sounding stupid.
"Mommy and Daddy are getting married!" Nate announced happily. "They're gonna kiss now."
"Nate," Erin said through her teeth, a blush covering her cheeks.
"And they're gonna have a baby," the little boy added, looking at Jamie, who was chewing her fist . "Is he gonna be like Jamie? She was kind of noisy when she was smaller but she's cool now. We play in daycare. Or I play. She just watches and throws stuff at me. But it's mostly stuffed animals, so it doesn't hurt. It makes her laugh."
Jamie giggled in her father's arms. Just like her mom, Lee thought.
"You'll just have to wait and see, buddy," Sam said, ruffling his son's hair. "So, what do you think? Too sudden? Or maybe too late?"
Say something, Kara ordered herself. They'll think something is wrong if you don't. "Nah. That's great, congratulations," she said, forcing a smile upon her face. That felt so frakking weird.
"Thanks," Sam said. "How's the arm?"
Right, the arm, she remembered. Funny thing, just a few hours ago they had fought side by side. Against cylons, ironically enough. And he had probably saved her life and everyone's by rushing them to the temple. Now, here she was – freaking out because he was in fact a toaster, or a failure as one. Didn't seem fair in her mind… "The arm's healing." Remarkably, after the realization that she wasn't being fair, talking to him didn't seem so difficult. Still weird, but not as much.
"Did you get hurt?" Nate asked curiously.
"Yep," she replied to the little boy. "But your mom's boss fixed it. Now I just have to wait for the sting to go away."
Erin smiled. "Did he give you the pills? 'Cause I can go there with my man and kick his…" she remembered Nate was around "…you know, if he didn't. Talbot can be annoying sometimes."
Sam grinned and nodded at his fiancé. "See how she calls me her man," he said, causing her to roll her eyes at him. "But really, what's keeping everyone in the CIC so happy? Can't you give us a little hint?"
Lee and Kara's looks crossed and they silently agreed that breaking the news a little earlier wouldn't hurt anyone. He turned to the pair. "The road is over. We've found Earth."
---
Twenty four hours passed and Kara Adama stood nervously inside a raptor along with her husband, daughter and few other people. The ship had just landed. On Earth. They were about to step onto Earth's ground.
After the planet's discovery, the Admiral had decided to grand D'Anna her wish and, after her memories of Earth's location had been carefully erased with Sharon's aid, the cylon had been taken to a far location, given a raptor and allowed to leave and join her people. Hopefully they would never have to see them again.
The raptor's ramp slowly descended and the light filled its inside. Kara gasped at the vision in front of her. The grass of the open field they had landed on seemed so green. And the sky, everything, it marveled her like she was a child. She took careful steps out of the raptor, Lee always by her side, holding their baby girl, who was just as awestruck as her mom.
"This is it," Lee murmured to her as they took the first steps on Earth's ground. "Home."
She gave him a smile and leaned against his shoulder. "Home."
A/N: And here is the end of the bumpy ride to Earth. Just one more chapter - the epilogue - and we're done. So, how did you like everything. Now, the epilogue is almost finished - just need a little edge trimming. So, if you are generous with the reviews you might get it... tomorrow! Really I have an assignment to do, classes to attend and a suicase to pack (cause I'm going to London tomorrow night) but maybe I will make a little time (maybe during the portuguese history class, cause I already know it by heart) to get done with the epilogue. See ya!
