"Kol, are you a witch?" I asked cautiously. He looked at me with a renewed light in his eyes.
"I was, before I became a vampire. When we became vampires, there had to be a balance, so I lost my magic. I haven't had it in a thousand years." Kol said, playing around with the candles.
"Maybe now there is balance again. You died and came back to life as a vampire. This time, you died as a vampire and came back to life again, maybe that restored the balance, letting you have your magic back?" I suggested.
"I think it may be the spirits way of thanking me for saving your bother and aunt. I risked sacrificing myself to save them. They hold that in high esteem, saving people." Kol said, looking over at me. I smiled at him.
"Why didn't you ever tell me you were a witch?" I asked curiously.
"I chose not to think about it, because I knew I would never be that way again. But it seems in this world nothing is impossible." Kol said truthfully.
"Isn't that the truth. What were you dreaming about anyways?" I asked, wondering what had triggered the magic.
"I was dreaming of when I was human, I guess it was more of a memory then a dream, but before I woke up it had flashed back to me standing in your kitchen... but let's not focus on that. Elena, I have my magic back. However, we cannot tell anyone yet. It could very well be an advantage to us. I have a feeling that I got it back for a reason." Kol responded, instantly making me feel a pang of guilt, remembering that I had gotten him killed. I was worried because I had the same bad feeling that things were not going to be easy. "Elena, have you not been to sleep yet?" He asked, pushing my hair from my face behind my ear.
"No," I asnswered honestly. "I am worried that it's all not real, that if I go to sleep everything will be gone when I wake up." He leaned over to me, now sitting up in the bed, and kissed me passionately. A sudden loud crack of thunder sounded outside and he pulled away.
"Tell me that wasn't real? Elena, this is real, your family will still be here when you wake, I will still be here." I looked at him and smiled. "Oh, and sorry about the thunder, it seems I will need to practice keeping my magic in control. A thousand years makes one kind of rusty on the subject." He said laughing. He pulled me to his chest and laid back down, holding me close to his heart. I could feel the slow vampire beating of his undead heart and it lulled me to sleep reassuringly.
The next morning I woke to Kol's arm wrapped around me protectively and everything came rushing back to me in an instant. Elijah, Kol, Jeremy, Jenna, the veil dropping, Elijah's compulsion being lifted, my emotions, the torture. I looked over at Kol and started to tear up. I couldn't believe that Elijah had wiped my memories of Kol, and that Damon and Stefan tortured me endlessly. My emotions were at an all time high. I had done so many horrible things, killed so many innocent people. I started crying, not knowing whether it was happy or sad tears.
"What's wrong, darling? Why are you crying?" I heard Kol's sleepy voice saying as he sat up next to me, rubbing my back.
"I just- I can't wrap my head around all these emotions I am feeling. After being an emotionless bitch for nearly a month, I feel all the guilt and pain that I should have felt then. And I am overwhelmingly happy, surprised, and worried that the veil dropped and I have you all back, and gaining my memories back all in one day, I just feel like my head is going to explode." I said, still sobbing. He wiped my tears away with the pad of his thumb, and left his hand on my cheek.
"Elena Gilbert, do you remember the day we first met, at the ball?" Kol asked.
FLASHBACK
Damon and Stefan wouldn't leave me alone, I hated how they thought I needed bodyguards constantly. I may not be immortal, but I don't think anyone would try anything at such a big event, where there would be so many witnesses. I knew Damon was more on my side then Stefan so I asked Damon to preoccupy Stefan while I went to talk to Esther. I walked through the halls of the large mansion, waiting for any signal from Esther. Without any warning, I was surprised by someone who had flashed directly in front of me. He was devilishly handsome.
"Hello, my name is Kol, Kol Mikaelson, may I have this dance." I started panicking when I realized that he was another original, thinking he was going to kill me, I figured I would accept his offer and try to stall him as long as I could.
"You may." I said, trying to hide the fear from my voice. I laid my hand in his and we began dancing. We were not in the ballroom, but we could still hear the music.
"Elena Gilbert, I presume?" He asked curiously.
"Yep, that's me. Another doppleganger extraordinaire." I said sarcastically.
"You know, I knew Tatia, the original doppleganger. She was quite a manipulative bitch. She used both of my brothers, yet they still loved her. I wasn't really around for Katerina, but I hear she was the same exact way, and yet Elijah still fell for her." Kol whispered in my ear. I looked him straight in the eyes.
"I am nothing like Katherine. I may have the same face as them, but I will never be like them. Now if you will excuse me, I have a little date with your mother." I said with a stern look on my face. I pulled away from our dance and began to walk away. He flashed back in front of me in an instant.
"I don't believe we finished our dance, darling. So you are here to speak to my mother? What for?" Kol asked curiously as we began dancing again.
"I don't know, she just said she wanted to see me." I replied truthfully.
"Brave one you are. Mother hated Tatia with a passion, the reason she used her for the sacrifice. Use caution, she is likely to use you as well." He whispered to me.
"What do you mean?" I asked cautiously.
"She has already tried to kill you, twice. Have you not already realized this? You were the sacrifice for Nik's hybrid ritual, you were supposed to die, and stay dead. Now you are the source of blood he needs to make his hybrids. She knew that as well as knowing that he could very well drain you of your blood and kill you. You were only a means to an end. However, seeing as you will disregard every warning I give you, which I honestly don't even know why I did, I will just say good luck." I looked at him confused as to why he would warn me, instead of encouraging me to go to my death. He had behaved nicely towards me, after I was sure he would try to kill me. He bowed to me as the song ended and shot me a bit of a confused looking smile, then shook his head as he walked away out the front door of the mansion. Maybe not every Original was terrible. Elijah was good, somewhat. I guess I shouldn't be so quick to judge.
After I left the room with Esther, completely shocked by what had just happened, wondering if I was going to tell Elijah the truth or not. I hadn't wanted all of the originals to die, only Klaus. I began walking down the hallway to go back downstairs, when someone flashed infront of me holding me against the wall.
"Elena, have a nice talk with my mother?" He asked quietly, low enough that the rest of the vampire family couldn't hear.
"Be careful." I didn't know why I told him that.
"So her intentions are not peaceful, just as I thought." He said to himself. "Did she take your blood?" He asked calmly. I nodded.
"She didn't give me a choice and she didn't tell me why until after." I was afraid he was going to kill me.
"It is no fault of yours, mother hated us all after she turned us, when she was the one who took our lives away. Thank you for your honesty." He said.
"The champaign tonight is supposed to be delicious." I said, winking at him slightly, wondering if he would get the hint.
"Keep an eye out." He whispered in my ear before he flashed away. I was beyond confused at what had happened I had this strange feeling around this person I had just met. Scratch that- thousand year old original vampire that had been dead for a hundred years. He had been nice to me and warned me of his mother. I had thought he had every intention of killing me, instead he was warning me and in turn I had warned him as well.
I walked back downstairs and Elijah ran into me. However, for some reason, I didn't warn him like I warned Kol. As the Champaign was passed out, I glanced over to Kol, who winked ever-so-slightly, before pretending to drink his drink. After it was done, I had had enough of Damon and Stefan and just wanted to leave by myself. After making a scene, they finally let me leave. I got to my car and felt an unnatural breeze of wind come from behind me. I spun around quickly to see Kol leaning against my car, out of sight from anyone at the party.
"Your blood was in the Champaign, I could smell it, but only since I was looking for it. Thank you." Kol murmured to me. He had a strange look on his face, like he was in pain.
"Kol, are you okay?" I asked him. Noticing my concern, he turned to leave without saying anything. Before he got the chance to flash away, I grabbed his arm (which was much more firm than I imagined) and spun him back around. "Tell me." I said, more of a command, even though I had no power over an original, I had a feeling about it.
"I am fine, Elena." He said, clearly not okay.
"No, you're not. Tell me." I said again. He looked away, off into the night as countless emotions began to show on his face.
"Imagine feeling everything, every emotion, all at once, extremely heightened, after not feeling for a thousand years." He said, still looking away. Wait, what?
"You flipped your humanity switch?" I realized, not knowing I had said it out loud. "Kol, look at me." I said, not really knowing why.
"How did you do it?" He asked, I looked at him confused. "I turned off my humanity a day after I became a vampire. I have never had any urge to turn it back on in a thousand years. How is it that a 17 year old human can make me turn them back on in a split second, without even realizing it?" He said, looking back at me with a single tear dropping from his face. I was shocked. He turned his emotions back on because of me? He looked like his walls were on the verge of crashing down, walls that he had reinforced for a thousand years. I did the only thing I could think of.
I hugged him.
It took him a moment to realize what had happened, but as he realized my arms were wrapped around him, he quickly wrapped his own firm arms around me, and let it out. Honestly, I couldn't believe what was happening. I had a thousand year old Original whom I had just met, who had been "dead" in a coffin being lugged around the world for a hundred years, crying on my shoulder after I had just pretty much saved his life.
A few minutes later, I heard someone walking close by. Before I knew it, He had picked me up and flashed into the woods with vampire speed. Moments later, he sat me down in the middle of a large meadow, the stars were shining brightly. It was a breathtaking sight.
"Where are we?" I asked as he sat down next to me.
"A place I knew over a thousand years ago. I used to come here as a human." He said, looking up at the sky, leaning back on the grass.
"It's beautiful." I said as I leaned back as well, just staring at the stars.
