"When Caroline puts her mind to something, there's no backing down." Elena whispered in my ear.
—
We arrived to a small 24 hour chapel, which I had honestly never heard of such a thing before. Elena and I were the two witnesses to the brief and to-the-point ceremony. All joking aside, they were married with a bloody marriage certificate in less than 5 minutes!
"Elena, you are technically my sister now!" Caroline screeched after the ceremony was through, running over to hug Elena, who was standing right next to me.
"Welcome to the family, Caroline." I said to her, smiling. She smiled sweetly back at me as we walked out of the chapel.
"Nik, did you get a tingly feeling during the ceremony? I heard Caroline asking my brother. He looked at her strangely.
"You felt that too, did you?" Nik asked her curiously. She nodded. I looked knowingly at Elena, who was already smirking at me. We exchanged a look that said 'let them figure it out by themselves'.
"Kol, brother, you and Elena are welcome to stay with us if you wish, although you may wish to wait a few hours to drop by, for your own sake." Nik said, winking. I looked at Elena who had a disgusted expression and laughed.
"I believe that my wife and I will be staying elsewhere, that is, if it is still there?" I asked curiously.
"Just as you left it, brother. I never touched any of your things. Remember, we still need to have that talk later, considering you owe me some explanations. Drop by for dinner, will you?" Nik asked. I nodded quickly, after looking to Elena for an answer.
"Oh, and keep an eye out for the Salvatore's, they are searching for Elena and if they come near her, I won't hesitate to kill them. I know you and Caroline are quite fond of the younger one. If they find her, they will try to take her again." I told Nik, who nodded seriously and picked up Caroline bridal style, flashing away in an instant.
"So where are we going?" Elena asked as we got back in the car.
"We are going to our house." I responded, smiling at her.
"i swear, I am never going to get used to you having houses pretty much everywhere." She said, laughing.
"They are yours now too, darling." I told her as we drove to the house. It was a smaller victorian home, from the late 1800s, early 1900s. Elena's eyes widened as we pulled into the drive. "Is that expression good or bad?"
"Definitely good. It's not at all what I was expecting." She said as I held the car door open for her to get out. We walked down the stone path to get to the house and I jumped to the roof and lifted a tile to get my key. "Nice hiding place, I wouldn't have ever guessed." She said as I jumped back down
"I can't keep hundreds of keys with me at all times, love. I would look like a bloody grounds keeper. I have to find good hiding places." I told her, winking. Before walking inside, I placed a strong protection spell on the house. New Orleans was full of the supernatural, and I knew I had plenty enemies, especially here.
We walked inside and I showed Elena to our room. We weren't even there for ten minutes before I could feel someone out front, trying to gain entry. My spell stopped them, but whoever it was, the spell only made them more angry.
"Elena, stay here, someone is trying to get through the barrier." I told her, who looked up at me worriedly. I flashed down the stairs and looked out my window. It was a group of vampires, led by none other than Marcel.
I opened the front door and stood there smirking at him.
"Kol Mikaelson, never thought I would see you again. Last I heard, you were dead, for good this time." Marcel said, once again trying to gain entrance through the barrier. Failing, I walked up to the very edge of the barrier and stood face to face with him.
"You of all people should know that I never end up staying dead for long." I told him.
"And what brings you back to my town?" Marcel asked angrily.
"Last time I checked, my siblings and I built this town, and my brother took you in, even so much as giving you a name, Marcellus. I am here because I wanted to be here." I told him, wondering if he needed to be reminded of my power over him.
"And last time I saw you, you were being carted off in a coffin as your big brother fled the city, leaving it to burn. It's my town now." I could feel myself getting angry and I was trying my best to control my magic. "Now, tell me what witch used magic here so they can be... taken care of. I don't tolerate magic in my city, even at the request of an original."
"You know, I don't take kindly to people trying to rule over me. In case you've forgotten, I am an original" I said, crossing the barrier to his side.
"You see, even the originals in my town have to follow my rules, and one of my rules is no magic." Marcel said, getting closer to me.
"You know me, Marcellus, I've never been one to play by the rules. But my brother would be quite angry with me if I ended you without him present, so I will settle for them instead." I said, motioning to the night walkers he had with him. They all made their move towards me, but they were too slow.
Marcel was writhing in pain on the ground from the aneurysm I was giving him while I moved with grace, pulling the hearts out of each of the night walkers' chests. When I was finished, only mere seconds later, I made Marcel stand by the movement of my wrist.
"What did you do to me?" Marcel asked as he rubbed his head.
"That's my little secret, now isn't it? Unless you want to end up like the rest of your little minions, I suggest you leave. Oh and do take their bodies, my wife won't be happy to see hearts on our lawn." I said, taking the time to wipe my hands on his shirt.
"You don't tell me what to do, not even Klaus can do that." He said, pushing his chest out.
"I beg to differ. Now run along." I said before giving him one last push with my magic before I retreated back inside the barrier. I watched him call someone on his cell phone before flashing off. I walked back to the door where Elena was standing with her arms crossed.
"Was that really necessary?" She asked as I walked up to her.
"That was Marcel, darling. He is the one Nik is taking the city from. I had to show him that he can't control me." I explained to her.
"That doesn't mean you have to leave 7 dead bodies in the front yard, Kol." She responded, pointing out at the bodies.
"Next time, I promise to leave less of a body count. It's a war down here, darling. Even Caroline had to kill someone." I told her, walking in the house behind her.
"Fine, but that doesn't mean I like it. Now go take a shower, you have blood all over you." She said, motioning to my clothes, which were indeed covered in blood.
I flashed upstairs at vampire speed and took a quick shower as she had asked me to. Washing away the blood, I felt the remorse of killing wash over me, even if I knew they were necessary deaths. I hadn't killed very many people since my humanity had been back on, only the newly turned vampires at the bar to keep Jeremy from completing the hunter's mark. With my humanity off, I had been one to leave trails of bodies everywhere I went. I couldn't do that anymore. After getting dressed, I walked back down to where Elena was sitting on the couch, a cup of tea in her hands.
"I'm sorry, darling." I said to her as I sat down next to her.
"I know it had to happen, Kol. You are right, it is a war down here. But we've done our part. Caroline is here. The rest isn't our battle. We still have our own battles at home that we have to take care of." Elena said. It was true, this wasn't our battle.
"You are right, love. We have our own battles back at home. We will stay for a few weeks, just to make sure things are settled here, and to let you have a little time with Caroline, then we will go home. I have this feeling we will be needed here eventually, Elena. If the witches are being controlled to the point where they cannot use their magic, I feel obligated to help." I told her. It was true, I was a witch as well.
"I guess I hadn't thought about it that way. You will be needed here, and I go where you go. So I guess we are staying for a little while, huh?" She laughed. It made me happy that she was willing to stay with me, no matter what.
I am sorry it took so long to update... I've kinda gotten caught up in my other stories! But all is well, and I shall try to update soon. I love you all! -Bex
