Description: It wouldn't matter if everything went wrong. To her, as long as she was with him, every day was perfect.
"Oh my goodness!" Gina exclaimed, rushing through her house like a whirlwind. "Where is it?"
Her father came out of the kitchen and asked, "What are you looking for?"
Without pausing her frantic search of the cupboards, Gina replied, "My purse! Have you seen it?"
Suddenly the doorbell rang and she squeaked "Oh no!" She quickly raced toward the door to open it, only to see her purse lying on the windowsill. She laughed sheepishly, realizing she must have put it there earlier.
When she opened the door, she saw Lucas holding a bouquet of flowers. "Happy anniversary!" He had a huge grin on his face as he handed her the flowers.
Gina smiled back at him. "Happy anniversary." She stepped back, allowing him into the house. "Come on, your present's in the kitchen."
As the couple headed toward the kitchen, they walked past Gina's father. "Hello, Mr Louren." Lucas said politely.
The man in question shook his head with a sigh as he said, "Lucas, it's just Robert. Mr Louren makes me sound old." He chuckled and patted Lucas' shoulder as he went out into the back garden.
Lucas looked around and suddenly noticed that he was alone. Just as he was about to call out, he heard Gina's voice say, "Close your eyes."
He obeyed and felt himself being guided forward. He continued moving until she told him to stop. "Okay, you can open them now!" She sounded apprehensive, as though she wasn't sure if he would like what she had done for him.
Responding to her command, Lucas opened his eyes and was stunned by what he saw. There, on the counter, sat a two-tier chocolate cake. That wasn't what had captured his attention, however. Gina had carefully iced the cake with characters from Lucas' favourite Disney movie, Bambi. Around the bottom of the cake, she had written "Happy 1 year anniversary!" in green icing.
"Wow..." he said, having no idea to say. "I love it! Thank you so much!" He exclaimed as he hugged her.
"I'm glad you like it." Gina said shyly. "I don't know if it tastes alright but I used my grandmother's recipe and her cakes always taste amazing so it should be."
As he closed the lid on the box of the cake, he looked up at the clock and said, "Hadn't we better get going? The movie will be starting in 45 minutes."
Gina nodded and they walked to the front door. She grabbed her coat, purse and phone and yelled up the stairs to her mother that she was leaving. They walked out the house and Gina locked the door with her own set of keys which she then slipped safely into her purse.
The cinema was only a five minute walk from Gina's house so naturally they decided to walk there. They were planning on seeing a fantasy film. Lucas had never had much of a liking for action films and Gina didn't want to force him to watch a romance (even though he had been willing to, just for her). In the end, they had compromised and had chosen the genre they both enjoyed- fantasy.
When they arrived at the cinema, Lucas insisted on paying for the popcorn and drinks but allowed Gina to pay for her own ticket.
They sat at the back of the cinema and ate their popcorn as they watched the movie together. At some point, Gina noticed that Lucas had started holding her hand and she smiled up at him.
Once the movie had ended (and Gina had gone through a whole box of tissues), they headed outside. "Wanna head to that new funfair?" Lucas suggested as they headed in that direction.
The bright colours and carnival music caught their attention before they had even reached the funfair. When they were inside, Gina headed to the coconut shy and surprised herself by knocking down all three coconuts. The owner of the stall presented her with her prize- a green handbag.
Lucas had headed over to the machine where a mechanical claw could be used to grab an object from inside it. He skillfully manipulated the claw and managed to extract a small teddy bear. Clutching it, he went to find Gina who was stood near the hook-a-duck stall. He watched the smile on her face get even wider when he presented her with the teddy.
"I love it!" She gushed, hugging it to her, before hugging him. "Every time I hold Toffee -that's his name because of the colour of his fur- I'll always think of this day."
Lucas chuckled. "I hope you don't love him more than me!" He joked.
Gina took his hands in her own. "Apart from my parents, obviously, I couldn't love anyone more than I love you." She kissed his cheek to prove her point. "See, I can kiss you but it would look just the tiniest bit weird if I tried to kiss a teddy bear."
They both laughed. "You know I'm picturing that right now, right?" Lucas gasped, trying and failing to keep a straight face. Gina also found herself picturing it and gave up trying to calm herself as she burst out laughing again.
Bent double with laughter, the two of them left the funfair and headed away from the town centre back toward Gina's house. The sky was beginning to darken to a deep blue and a couple of stars were twinkling valiantly in the sky.
As they walked, more and more stars started to shine as night fell. Eventually they reached the grassy hill near Gina's house.
Lucas flopped onto the grass, staring up at the sky. Gina joined him, albeit more gracefully. "You know, looking at those stars makes me feel like one of them must have fallen down because you're just as beautiful as they are." Gina blushed a pretty pink and leaned against him. "I hope this day was okay." He added, sitting up and looking her in the eye.
"It wasn't okay." Gina said, before adding as she saw his face fall. "It was perfect. Every day I spend with you is perfect, each and every one, regardless of whether things go wrong. Today was perfect...because I spent it with you."
He took her hands and pulled her to her feet before gently kissing her, leaving butterflies in her stomach when they broke apart. "That was perfect, too." She breathed, smiling softly at him.
They headed toward Gina's house and as she turned the key in the lock and headed inside, she gave him a kiss on the cheek and a hug. He gave her the same smile that had made her fall in love with him all those years ago before heading off to his own house. She watched him leave, a huge grin on her face.
She couldn't possibly describe the day with any other words- it had been...perfect.
