Description: She just wanted this day to be special for him, and make it one to remember.
It was the end of April, which meant only one thing for Gina. Lucas' birthday would soon be approaching. She had taken it upon herself to plan the perfect surprise party for him, enlisting the help of her friends and her parents as well as Lucas' to pull it off. It would be the first special occasion they would celebrate as a couple, so she wanted it to be extra-special – something that he would always look back on and remember fondly.
Everything was going according to plan. The food had been prepared, the cake baked (she had baked it herself with no help whatsoever, so she felt rather proud of it) and the party decorations were being hung up. Her parents were out at Venture Falls Forest Natural Centre, setting up the next part of the party. Lucas' parents had taken him shopping to allow time for the party preparations to be completed.
The only thing she still needed to do was find Lucas a present. What do I get for the one person I love more than anything? She didn't want to get him something cliché or something that didn't show him how much he meant to her. Suddenly it hit her and she rushed to her cupboard and pulled something out – she knew exactly what she could give him.
Later that day...
"He's coming!" Nick said, having been watching for Lucas and his parents from the window. "Everyone hide!" Immediately everybody ducked behind or underneath furniture. Gina flicked the light switch off and crouched behind the sofa, holding her breath.
"Hello?" Lucas' voice sounded, confusion apparent in his voice. "Um, guys, where are you?" Mr Louren walked over to the light switch and flicked it on, prompting everyone to jump out from their hiding places.
"Surprise! Happy birthday!" They all yelled, grinning widely. Lucas gasped before he started laughing.
"Thanks guys! To be honest, I thought you'd all forgotten or something."
Toby laughed. "No way! Your girlfriend would never have forgiven us!"
"Yeah!" Jessica chimed in. "Gina was the one who organized the whole party – with our help, of course!"
Lucas strode across the room and kissed his girlfriend on the cheek, causing her to blush. "Thank you."
Gina smiled shyly before Mrs Wanson clapped her hands together and said, "Right! Time for presents!"
They all turned their attention to the pile of presents on the table. Lucas opened them all carefully, turning to thank whoever had sent it. Finally only Gina's present remained. She looked nervously at her boyfriend as he opened the present and looked at what she had given him.
"Wow..." Lucas breathed, impressed. He held up the present so that everyone could see. It was a painting of a flower garden. To be more precise, it was a painting of the flower garden Lucas and Gina had visited that weekend. Their painted figures sat amongst the flowers, their hands intertwined for all eternity – just how Gina had always wanted it to be. She had captured the magic of that moment perfectly.
Everyone smiled and complimented Gina on her artistic talent and Lucas hugged her, causing her to blush once again.
When they were in the car, heading for the Venture Falls Forest Natural Centre, everyone started singing along to the radio (very loudly!) to pass the time. It took them at least half an hour to arrive at the main building.
By the time they had all signed in, the rest of Lucas' family had arrived – his uncles, aunts and cousins. Gina smiled as little Maisie, a dark haired six year old girl, ran towards Lucas and demanded rather imperiously that he pick her up. Lucas complied and pretended to stagger under her weight, prompting the girl to giggle. He carried her into the room on his shoulders and Gina followed, sighing happily at how kind he was.
Soon everyone was settled down in the room that Lucas' parents had reserved with Gina's help – it had the best view of the forest in all its glory. The party food was laid out on the table and everyone piled food onto their plates, eating ravenously. Gina didn't know why food always tasted better at parties but it did taste great.
Mrs Wanson disappeared for a moment and returned with the cake – the cake Gina had baked herself. She walked toward the table whilst Mr Wanson led everyone in a chorus of "Happy Birthday." The cake was placed in the centre of the table, candles blazing away merrily. Lucas looked around at everyone, their expressions impatient and excited as they waited for him to blow out the candles and make a wish. He took a deep breath and blew out the candles in one go.
"What did you wish for?" Maisie asked excitedly, bouncing up and down in her seat. "Tell me! Tell me!"
Gina looked at the little girl. "Did you know that wishes can't come true if you tell someone else what you wished for?" The little girl shook her head, looking dismayed.
"But I really wanna know!" She whined before leaving her seat and climbing onto Lucas' knee. "Was it a good wish?" He nodded, smiling gently at her.
"A really good wish." Maisie smiled at this and told him she hoped it came true.
Later on, Gina and Lucas were walking through the forest centre, hand-in-hand. The younger children were doing some kind of nature treasure hunt with the adults, which left the older ones with nothing to do except explore.
"Thank you." Lucas began, as they walked and Gina looked at him questioningly.
"What for?" She asked, twisting her fingers around his shyly.
"For making today so special." He said simply as he kissed her.
The bushes behind them started to rustle and there was the unmistakable sound of giggling to be heard behind the many leaves.
"Maisie!" They said together exasperatedly. The little girl popped up, her green eyes glowing.
"Are you two getting married too?" She squeaked excitedly.
Getting married? They both thought incredulously, wondering where Maisie had gotten the idea from.
Toby and Jessica appeared out of nowhere. "There you are! We've been looking for you guys everywhere! It's time to go!"
Maisie jumped up and down whilst clapping her hands upon seeing them. "They're gonna get married too!" She informed them all excitedly.
Jessica leaned over and whispered, "She saw us kissing." Gina nodded and explained that they had also been kissing when Maisie had found them. "Do you think she thinks you only need to kiss someone to marry them?"
Lucas looked at his cousin before saying gently, "Maisie, why do you think we're going to get married?"
The girl folded her arms and sighed, as though the answer was the most obvious thing in the world. "Because you were kissing, duh! People kiss at weddings when they get married!"
Gina said kindly. "A kiss isn't the only thing that happens at weddings, Maisie. The couple have to promise to love, honour and care for each other as long as they both live and make vows to each other."
Maisie looked at them all steadily. "You love, honour and care for each other though, don't you?" She asked them and they all nodded mutely. "Well, in that case: you're already married!" She proclaimed, her six year old logic taking over. Lucas smiled at his cousin and picked her up as they left the forest centre and headed for home.
Little did both couples know that Maisie's proclamation came true. Lucas, at his wedding to Gina was stopped by Maisie, now a girl of thirteen, who said one thing:
"I told you."
In their later life, Lucas and Gina looked back on two days in their lives as being truly special: their wedding day and that birthday party so long ago.
"Thank you." Lucas said, taking his wife's hands in his own.
Gina smiled, remembering the conversation, even after so many years and asked, "What for?"
He kissed her gently before replying, "For making my life so special."
