Description: Their friendship began because of this instrument - the xylophone.

"Okay, class, we're going to be using the musical instruments today!" The teacher called out. For a class of five year olds, this was an exciting treat and everyone started chattering excitedly as another teacher wheeled in a trolley filled with musical instruments such as triangles, bongos, scrapers, rain-makers and a xylophone.

One by one, each student was called up to collect an instrument. A little girl named Gina and a little boy called Lucas were the last two students. When they came to the trolley, they found that it was empty, save for one instrument...

"You can play it if you like." Lucas said, ever the kind student. "I don't mind."

Gina stared at the xylophone. She always liked the instrument because of the different sounds that it could make. As she was about to tell him she didn't mind not using it, she suddenly had a much better idea:

"What if we played it together?"

Lucas looked her and nodded, smiling, as they took the xylophone out of the trolley and sat down with the rest of the class.

The teacher took out a guitar and began to play as she sang popular children's songs. The children joined in, enthusiastically playing their instruments at the same time. This was a time that all the students enjoyed because they weren't learning maths or other boring lessons.

Lucas and Gina worked together very well, both in playing the xylophone and singing. Their voices seemed to blend and harmonise and somehow they could play the xylophone with relative ease (for five year olds).

After several songs, the hour allocated to the lesson was over, to the disappointment of the class. Gina, however, was happy. Her favourite lesson might have ended, but when Lucas smiled at her and offered to sit near her at lunch, she knew she had a new friend...
