"Kathleen!"
That voice Adam would know from anywhere. She was screaming. She was in trouble. All Adam could think of was to get to her anyway possible. Adam drew his gun from its holster around his waist and ran toward the cabin. Hoss and Isabelle yelled after him as they took off after Adam. Everyone had their guns, and they had to stop him before he got himself killed. Adam ran up to the side of the cabin and stood with his back against the outside wall of the cabin, looking into the window. He was peeking through the window trying to get a view of Kathleen when Hoss grabbed him by the shoulder and spun his older brother to face him.
"Dad gum Adam, what are you doing? Y'are gonna get us all shot." Hoss looked into his eyes. All he saw was fear and worry looking back. Adam was beyond reason at the moment. What could Hoss say? The love of his brother's life was in danger and he had to do something to help. Hoss knew he would probably do the same.
"He's hurt her, Hoss. What do you expect me to do? I have to save her and tell her..." Adam's voice reflected how he felt inside. The usual calm and think-before-you-act man was a mess inside.
"I know Adam, but we are here now and we are going to save her. You have got to calm down, though, and use your head." Hoss knocked him in the head as Adam only stared at him, lost. After seeing Adam and Hoss take off, Lila had dragged Isabelle over to the same spot and hidden her behind a barrel. Lila took a guard a little ways away out with her throwing knife.
Inside, Duke watched Kathleen gasp as he drove the knife deeper into her abdomen. He made sure to injure her just enough to make a statement, but not to kill her. He pulled the knife out, dragging it over her skin, cutting into her more before pulling away. She stumbled back a bit, gasping and trying to make sense of what all was happening around her. Blood was pouring down her side as she dropped in a limp pile before him, quickly losing consciousness from the sudden blood loss. He stared at her for a few seconds and watched her pass out before he stepped over her and grabbed his gun. Simon and Josh came in from the back and hastily walked over to him.
"The backup guys are here, Duke. We have ten men on our side now." Josh saw Kathleen on the ground behind Duke, "What did she do?"
Duke turned and looked at her body. "She betrayed me. Fell for another man. So I took her out."
Josh and Simon exchanged glances and nodded in approval of his methods before stopping as Duke spoke again. "Her friends are on their way here. We need to be prepared. None of them live."
Josh stepped forward as he spoke with a deadly, crooked grin on his face. "I saw them coming up the trail."
Duke spoke swiftly and with power as he delivered his orders. "Simon, I want you to go out back and tell the new guys the plan. Let me and Josh lure them in, and y'all can come up from behind and they'll be nothing but sitting ducks waiting to be taken out one by one." Duke spoke the last words slowly, with a dark twist.
Simon smiled as he slipped out the back leaving Duke and Josh inside. Upon hearing a loud clank from outside the left window he knew exactly where Adam and the rest of the rescue party were hiding. Duke waved his hand, telling Josh to move Kathleen. He did before sneaking out the back as well.
"It's no use hiding. I know exactly where you are," Duke chuckled loudly as he knew he had them exactly where he wanted them. They couldn't escape. "We have you surrounded so you might as well give up. Besides, Adam, don't you want to say goodbye to your little lady before she dies?"
Hearing him mention her, Adam lunged forward. Luckily, Hoss had been watching and tackled him to the ground, just missed by a bullet coming through the window. The fight was on. Lila had snuck around the side of the house, ducking and sneaking below the windows. She had been watching Duke and the guys through the window. Lila smiled darkly and fired two shots just above Duke's head. Glass shattered as he ducked, hitting the floor. He looked up, snarling, just in time to see Lila grin at him.
"That little bitch has the guts to come back here. Well, I'll show her." He fired back, causing Lila to hit the ground hard, scraping her hand and knee. She swore under her breath before crawling toward the back of the house.
Upon hearing gunfire, Simon ordered the guys to surround the house. Adam hit the ground as bullets began flying. He already had it made up in his mind that at the first chance, he would make a run for the house, and if given the chance, he was going to put a bullet right between Duke's eyes. He felt his chest heaving as sweat rolled down his face. He held his gun up as he turned around and fired two shots at a man hiding behind a tree.
Hoss had grabbed Isabelle when the gun fight had started. He hid them behind the watering trough. Isabelle was starting to panic as Hoss felt himself being torn between trying to protect her and make sure Adam and Lila didn't do anything reckless.
"Aww Dad burn it! How do I always get myself in these situations?"
"Because you care." Isabelle looked over at him and grabbed his loose hand and smiled a little before screaming as a bullet flew over her head. Hoss shoved her down and fired back, hitting the guy in the chest.
The fight continued. One man had snuck up behind Hoss and Isabelle, Adam seeing him just in time and taking him out. Hoss shot the other one when he was darting across the yard between two rocks. Now only six men remained, and they had ran back up into the forest to regroup.
Coming out into the open Isabelle was the first to notice that Lila was missing. "She did not run off by herself did she?"
Meanwhile, Lila was around back behind a barrel firing at an unseen foe when someone grabbed her from behind. He had grabbed her around the waist and covered her mouth as he shoved her up against the wall. She managed to turn her head enough to get a good look at him when she recognized him.
"Josh?" Lila all but spit the words out as she struggled against his hold, but Josh kept a firm hold around her neck.
"Well it's nice to see you again too, Red." He snickered as he watched her struggle. He had found her quite attractive since Duke had brought her home. He had been waiting too long to get his hands on her, and now was his chance.
Lila stopped struggling as she tried for the knife in her pocket, but Josh noticed and twisted her arm up toward her back and took the knife from her. He held her against his chest as he ran his hands up her body to her face and cupped her cheek. Lila glared at him with fire in her eyes as she spit in his face. He pursed his lips as he wiped his face with the back of his arm before twisting her arm inward, causing her to cry out in pain. Lila could feel her muscles and ligaments straining as they were pulled. She tried to stay strong, but a cry escaped her lips as she closed her eyes.
"You sure are a feisty one, Red. It's too bad that your sister isn't here to rescue you this time, but don't worry. You'll be joining her real soon." Lila opened her eyes as she felt the cold steel end of a gun against her temple. She gulped as she saw her entire life flash before her eyes. It wasn't long, but it was her life. From growing up with her family to this moment. What struck Lila most was the fact that these past few years were the years that mattered most to her. Everything her sisters had sacrificed and still sacrificed for her, and now she was going to die like this. From a bullet from some guy that was out to ruin her not so perfect family. She sighed, accepting her fate. Maybe this would be better, she thought, to die quick, before she could ever truly mess up badly.
Lila heard the gun go off, but was shocked that she didn't feel it hit her. No ripping pain; just nothing. Was this what it was like to die? No pain? Wow, this was easier then she had imagined. She opened her eyes to see Josh fall against the wall, bleeding. His eyes were wide as he opened his mouth, but nothing came out. He soon fell all the way to the ground as his eyes set in place and a small trickle of blood escaped from his lips. She whipped around to see the end of a smoking barrel and a familiar face smiling back at her.
