Melanie and Gwain arrived at the castle just as the fight broke out. Knights were everywhere, fending off Saxons. The king was nowhere to be seen.
"Why are they still fighting?" She asked herself aloud. "It was Morgana's magic controlling them."
"Mordred." Gwain growled, pulling out his sword. Melanie followed suit as they raced into the cacophony.
Melanie slashed at Saxons from her horse, searching for the king.
"Melanie!" She heard Leon call. She turned and saw him fighting his way to her. "Where were you?"
"I'll explain later." She replied, not unkindly. "Where is Arthur?"
"Up at the castle." She nodded and rode as fast as her mare could go, taking down Saxons left and right.
She found Arthur at the Castle steps fighting off a group of Saxons. She jumped from her horse to help him.
"Nice of you to join us." He snipped, parrying a blow that would have gone straight through his shoulder.
"Had something to take care of." She responded, fending off another attack.
"Is that my sword?" He asked, noticing Excalibur in her hands.
"Long story. Just take it back." She gave him his sword and took the replica from his grasp. "The Saxons aren't important. Find Mordred."
"How do you know?"
"Just trust me! Have I been wrong yet?" He nodded and the two fought their way to the Druid boy.
They found him fighting against Sir Owen, three knights lay dead at his feet already.
Upon noticing his new opponents, Mordred turned and lunged at them. Melanie blocked his attack and slashed at his side, creating a break in his chain mail.
Mordred replied in kind, swinging at her leg. Arthur took the opportunity to plunge his sword into Mordred's side, delivering a fatal blow.
The Druid boy fell to the ground, dead, and the Saxons stopped fighting. Arthur looked over victoriously at Melanie who fell to her knees, clutching her leg. Blood blossomed through the fabric of her pants.
The Saxons cleared out, leaving the knights in the court yard.
"Melanie!" Gwain yelled, running up to his fiancée.
"Get her to Gaius!" Arthur yelled. Gwain picked Melanie up off the ground and carried her to Gaius's
chambers.
"In the main hall." Merlin said, running up to them. "More room for wounded." Gwain nodded and ran to the main hall.
He found an empty cot and placed her in it. Merlin ran to get supplies to help her.
"You'll be okay My Love." He promised, kissing her head. Sweat beaded down her forehead and black spots danced in her vision. Her face was white as a sheet and her breathing was shallow and shaky.
"Gwain, stand back I need room to work." Merlin instructed. Gwain nodded and stepped aside.
Merlin cut the leg of Melanie's pants off and studied the wound. It was deep and she was bleeding profusely. She would bleed out before he could do anything.
"I can't do anything in time." He informed the thee two solemnly. "She'll bleed out before I'll be able to finish the stitches."
"No." Gwain argued. "No. There has to be something you can do. Please. After everything she's done for us." He paused a moment and looked at her face. "We're to be married."
"There is something I can do." He admitted. "But please do not judge me too harshly for this." He looked at Arthur when he spoke those words.
"Do whatever to takes." The King nodded. Merlin put his hand on the slash on Melanie's leg and muttered something under his breath. His eyes glowed gold and Arthur gasped in shock.
The cut on Melanie's leg began to close and color returned to her face.
"Thank the gods." Gwain sighed. He seemed completely unfazed by Merlin having magic.
Merlin looked at Arthur, silently pleading him to understand. The king shook his head and left the hall. Merlin looked sadly at Gwain and Melanie, but neither of them noticed.
Gwain had his arms around Melanie in an instant, kissing her cheeks and running his fingers through her hair.
"Did we do it?" She asked. "Did we win?"
"We won." Gwain assured. "Thanks to you Darling."
"Arthur killed Mordred." Merlin told her.
"Speaking of the king." Gwain said. "Go talk to him." Merlin nodded and went to find the king.
"Oh gods Melanie." Gwain turned his attention back to his fiancée. "I thought I'd lose you."
"Did Merlin use magic to save me?" She asked, watching her friend walk from the hall.
"He did." He confirmed. Melanie stood, the sting from the cut still dancing on her leg.
"I have to find him." She said, leaving after Merlin.
She found him on the staircase on his way to the Kings room.
"Melanie?" Merlin asked. "What are you doing? You should be resting."
"Why did you do it?" She asked. "Why did you use your magic on me?"
"You were going to die Mels." He replied. "I couldn't lose my best friend."
"You could be hanged for this." She shook her head. "You should have just let me die."
"Don't you dare say that." He replied. "You saved Arthur's life. And Gwains. The entire kingdom is saved thanks to you. Also, I couldn't let you miss your own wedding."
"Gwain told you about the engagement?" She looked surprised.
"He told me you were getting married to convince me to save you. Truth be told I was already contemplating using my magic." Melanie smiled and hugged Merlin.
"And now, I have to talk to Arthur." He kissed her cheek in a brotherly manner and continued down the corridor.
