Chapter 1: The Assignment

Three weeks later…

"You have got to be kidding Koenma!" Yusuke shouted, slamming his fist on Koenma's desk. "I just returned from completing a mission for you and you're sending me out on another one?! Doesn't this place believe in letting people take any breaks?! Ever heard of those before?!"

They were standing around the desk in Koenma's office in spirit world, watching the newly reinstated Spirit Detective in his tantrum. Kurama watched in mild amusement from the shadows while Koenma and Boton just stared at Yusuke, ever use to his change of attitude and complaining.

"Don't worry; you won't be the only one on this case, Yusuke," Koenma informed the Spirit Detective, sucking furiously on his pacifier before he continued. "Kurama and Hiei will be joining you and most likely Kuwabara once he finds out your on a new case."

"Hiei is supposed to be in Demon World, why would he do this case?! And Kurama? I thought he had given up doing assignments?!"

Koenma sighed, rubbing his temple. He never could decide if having Yusuke reinstated as his Spirit Detective had been a good idea. Ever since having the young man back to work for him, the young prince had been suffering from a variety of headaches…

"Well, we like to keep your old team informed as to what is going on. Though your power is great, Yusuke, there is always the possibility of you needing help. As for Hiei wishing to take part in this case, he was the one that brought this assignment to us in the first place."

"What does this have to do with Hiei? How'd he come across whatever it is that your sending me on?"

"A few days ago, Hiei brought attention to me that the Ice Realm in Demon World, the realm where he and Yukina were born, has been destroyed. One demoness, an old friend of Yukina's, was kidnapped while the others were all raped and slaughtered. It was a massive force led by one demon. The women were brutalized before given peace in death. We, um, we found evidence that the missing demoness had been, um, taken within her home before being kidnapped"

"Dear god," Yusuke whispered as Koenma described the slaughter that took place, slumping down in the chair before the desk.

"So, Hiei has requested, more like ordered," Koenma whispered the last part under his breath before continuing, "to join you on this assignment and will join you, so I would be thankful for that help. We both know Kuwabara won't let you do something without him, so that's a given and Kurama was as demanding as Hiei to be on this case, if not more so."

"Why would Kurama want to do a case with me? We haven't seen each other in months, almost a year now. I didn't even know he was still around this area of Japan anymore."

"He heard from Hiei about what happened and discovered something that intrigues him about your assignment," Koenma said, stacking the papers scattered across his desk.

"And what would that be?!" Yusuke demanded, getting annoyed at having to ask every question and not just be informed of everything.

"Her."

Koenma picked up a picture and threw it at Yusuke, who quickly snatched the picture away. Staring up at him was a dark blue haired girl with gold no amber eyes surrounded by ice.

"She is the ice maiden that was taken during the slaughter and she is a very close friend of Yukina's. She and Yukina are the last of the ice maiden's."

"You still haven't told me what Kurama finds so intriguing about her."

"It's her I find intriguing," Kurama stated, stepping from the shadows to look down at the picture, feeling his heart race.

"When did you get here?" Yusuke asked in surprise, having had jumped when Kurama spoke from the shadows.

"I have been here for awhile, Yusuke. I am here to help you on this case and would hope that you would like me to join you. There is something about her that Youko reacts to. I cannot remember, but I believe that we have met before. My heart calls out to her."

"Your heart calls out for her? Like a soul mate thing?" Yusuke asked, puzzled over Kurama's reaction to the woman.

"I believe it is something along those lines, yes."

"You say Youko recognizes her? I thought your memories from that time had been restored."

"It appears that sections are missing that are further from my past. I have questioned Hiei, but he said that Yukina knows nothing of me, but this young ice maiden is older than them by three hundred years, so Youko and she could have possibly met before they were even born."

"You two can speak of details a little later, I need you to regroup with Hiei soon and try to collaborate what has been found."

She was sitting within the mansion's temple, five of her assigned guards watching her from a safe distance as she meditated, when he walked in. She could feel his evil aura the moment he walked into the room and could not surpass a shiver that crawled up her spine at the feel of him so near to her.

But for someone so cruel, he let her have her space, during the day, as long as she was watched 24 hours a day and seven days a week from his guards, when she was not in his presence.

"Why do you meditate so much?" He spoke, his breath hitting the shell of her ear as he spoke to her.

Shiva opened her amber eyes to see him kneeling before her and she thought for a fleeting moment of how quiet he was that she did not detect him before her. She brought her hands together and clenched them tightly in her lap as she bowed her head, trying to still the trembling she always experienced when he was in the same room as her.

"I pray for those that have lost their lives, there are many that I must ask forgiveness of," she whispered quietly, knowing that he would not care for all those people in her village that he killed.

"You are too gentle and kind, my dear," He said, a slight smirk on his face. "You have no need to ask for forgiveness. Those deaths were not your fault, but the fault of myself. I did not really care for them, as long as I had what I wanted."

"Exactly, if you had not come for me, they may have never died the way they did, to suffer what they had because of what you wanted," she whispered, looking up at him.

He smiled, lifting a hand up and grasping her chin gently, ignoring her flinch at his touch.

"I will not ask for forgiveness from you, my dear. That would just make their deaths all the more in vain. You should not dwell on matters that you had absolutely no control over."

"It was how I was raised, I cannot think of it any other way," she answered quietly and honestly. "I have always wonder, that if I did not fight you, would you have left them alone? If I had come willing with you? Offered myself to you?" She was ashamed to ask because even knowing what her people had suffered, she did not know if she could have offered herself freely to him, not knowing now what he wanted and did do to her.

The young man leaned back, not expecting such a question from the woman in front of him, but smirked anyway.

"I very much doubt it, my dear. Many had already lost their lives before I collected you. Do not place so much guilt on yourself. As I have said, there was nothing you could have done to help your people. Do not dwell on this anymore. You are dear to me, so do not fear of anything else."

"It is because I am dear to you that I fear you, my lord," she whispered.

She raised her head, looking around and noticed that her guards were no longer in sight. She turned panicked amber eyes to him as he stared at her intently with his red ones.

"Where, where are..."

"I sent them away," he whispered, tucking a stray piece of dark blue hair behind her ear.

Shiva stood, backing away from him with wide eyes. He slowly stood from his crouched position, reaching forward and taking her wrist as she flinched back.

"There is only one thing that I would ever want forgiveness for." He asked, kissing the inside of her wrist, in a whisper. "Will you pray for my forgiveness for what I'm about to do? What I love to do to you? I crave you so much…."

She knew what was coming as tears streamed down her cheeks and he kissed her lightly on the lips, reaching up to her hair to release the tie holding it back.

"I will pray for you," she whispered. "May he forgive you, for I will not, I never do," she whispered, bowing her head.

He took a step back in surprise, staring down at her before he reached out and tilted her chin up, staring into her eyes. His blood red eyes stared intently into hers, maybe for the first time really noticing how she blanked her expression off from him.

She was usually so alive and so fiery, but right now, she was subdued, and it affected him, somewhere deep down, to know that there were times that she completely surrendered to him and that it actually did hurt her.

He cursed, he did not know when such feelings had rose within him for her, but everyday would pass and he would feel more and more regret for causing her this pain. But as he has told her and himself many times, he just craved her too much to just let her go; the warmth of her skin, the feel of her tight entrance wrapped around his length.

No, he could never let her go, but he could continue to shower her with kindness and show that he really did care. He released her. Shiva slowly sunk to her knees, eyes tightly closed. She opened them slowly as her head was tilted up.

He stared down at her, wiping her tears with his thumb. She looked so beautiful and so very delicate as he stared down at her tear streaked face and her ice blue hair waving down her back and to her waist.

"I will see you at dinner," he whispered, bending down to lightly kiss her lips.

He stared at her for a moment more before turning away from her and leaving the room, placing her guards in the room again as he left. Shiva ignored their presence and scrambled to her feet, rushing from the temple and down the halls to her room. She threw herself onto the bed, letting herself sob as she thought of what was to come.
