I am just posting this to inform you of a very difficult decision I have made. Which stories I work on at any given time is a complete mystery to me most of the time unless there is something I'm specifically motivated to work on for whatever reason. I prefer to write this way because if I just write something I don't feel motivated for at the time, the quality of the writing will not be up to my usual standard. However, given the time difference between the last update to this story and this new update, and the fact that I cannot seem to find motivation for completing it anymore, I have come to the decision that this fic is going to be discontinued.
I feel I owe you an explanation of why I am doing this. When I first started writing this, I had every intention of finishing it, to the point I was even planning future scenes that would play out regarding the gang's adventures in Ancient Egypt, and also the Ceremonial Battle and epilogue when I hadn't even written some of the earlier chapters. The motivation for writing that I emphasised in the previous paragraph was sort of like a wave washing over the beach in that, in comes the tide, the sand is nice and wet, but then the water flows back out again, and the cycle repeats. By this, I mean that the periods when I wrote were times when I felt really motivated to do so, until the motivation died away to be reborn in future. Sometimes the reason for this was that I was motivated to write something else at the time, but I could practically guarantee that I would return to this at a later date.
It was only after writing in the scene introducing Fasha that my motivation began to permanently fade. I think the main reason for this was that, for much of the story, there was an overarching mystery as to who Yugi's mother was, and once that particular thread was resolved, it just felt like I'd done what I meant to do. There was still a bit more I had planned to write before properly ending the story, but I will get to that later.
(Also, I was aware that Yugi had a canon mother, but I chose to replace her with Fasha for that role because A: I really wanted to see Yugi as a Saiyan, and that required one of his parents to have Saiyan biology. B: I felt that the 'long lost father' trope was overused to the point of becoming a cliche. To me, the quest to find missing parents or relatives is quite interesting, but oh dear King Kai was the missing parent being a father DONE. I wanted to change it up so that it was the mother that was missing this time. C: Fasha was the only known female pure-blood Saiyan in the Dragonball Universe, and unique characters like that have a tendency to draw my eye, especially because it could be interesting to explore a Saiyan's Maternal struggles. Additionally, Yugi's canon mother only really makes cameo appearances in the anime to my knowledge, and so I wasn't too concerned about replacing her)
However, given how much I'd planned to write before I lost interest, as well as the positive reception this story has enjoyed, I do feel guilty about my decision and the resulting consequence of leaving everyone in suspense. As an apology, and also acknowledgement of how much of a positive influence your feedback has had on me, I am going to, in the following paragraphs, share with you the scenes I had in mind for the story going forward.
Scene 1:
Setting: Yugi's house, after Fasha has returned
Context: It is now night, after a long day where Fasha insisted on having Yugi train with her, and that night he asked Solomon Muto about finding the Millennium Puzzle instead of continued training. She found the story really boring.
Scene:
Things got somewhat intriguing later. When Yugi was asleep, a crashing noise woke him up. He saw that the bag holding his Millennium Items had disappeared, and there was a large hole in his window. Directly after spotting the hole, he heard muffled screaming, so he flew out of the hole to just above the Game Shop, whereupon he saw Fasha with a large, black trash bag… a large, black, writhing trash bag at that.
"What have you got there?" Yugi yelled.
"Don't worry, just taking out the trash," Fasha responded.
"Garbage doesn't usually move like the bag you've got at the moment. What is in there?"
The bag split open, revealing Rex Raptor and Weevil Underwood, both of whom started running towards the road and cursing.
"Like I said," Fasha stated, reappearing in front of them with a hand extended. "…just taking out the trash."
"We're not trash!" the boys shouted.
"Oh really? You are even weaker than a Saibaman."
"Cyber-what?" Rex screamed. "I didn't know that loser Yugi had such a crazy bitch of a mother!"
"Quiet, Rex!" Weevil shouted back. "You have got to learn when to shut up, although with that being said, at least we now know that Yugi can't walk five meters in this world on his own, so he's got a mommy to cry to and she'll protect him, just like tonight."
Fasha burst out laughing at Weevil's response, eventually speaking. "You think I did what I did purely because I wanted to protect Yugi? It's true that I'm his mother, but the reason you are being punished the way you are isn't because you stole something belonging to my son."
"Then what?"
"It's because you trespassed into a lion's den. Small, filthy scavengers like yourself should know that it isn't in your best interest to provoke a predator. More often than not, when that happens, the scavenger quickly becomes prey, especially when the lioness is hungry!"
"Weevil…" Rex began, "…run!"
"Hmph," Fasha grunted, with her hand still pointing at the two children as they dashed past her and ran towards an alleyway. Immediately, a gust of air blew them off their feet and sent them flying, with the bag they stole flying into the alleyway itself
Scene end:
A quick note: I had actually created a chapter draft with that scene, but the chapter itself didn't feel anywhere near finished.
Scene 2:
Setting: Ancient Egypt, near the Nile River
Context: Mana has just found Yugi, mistaking him for the younger Pharaoh.
Scene:
The strange girl walked up to Yugi, and moved to grab his tail. He quickly shot her target out of her reach, but she merely ran around him and tried to grab it from a different angle. Time after time, she'd try to grab it, and each time Yugi would merely turn around and swish it out of reach. After a while, the girl became too tired to continue, and Yugi commented:
"Those times with everyone in school grabbing my tail finally paid off."
Scene end:
Scene 3:
Setting: Ancient Egypt, near the Nile River
Context: Mana is enquiring about why Yugi and the gang are friends with the Pharaoh and yet she knows nothing about them.
Scene:
"We've been friends with the Pharaoh for years!" insisted Joey
"Then why don't I know you?" queried the girl
"Uh-oh," Gohan spoke. "I think we need to be careful. We've come into the past, and anything we say could drastically alter the future, creating consequences for our timeline and upseting the entire space-time continuum-"
"NERD!" yelled Joey and Tristan
"Uhhh… what's a nerd?" the girl asked.
Scene end:
Note: I also imagined Gohan (and maybe Yugi as well) using a Kamehameha to blast away bandits trying to attack them. Maybe also engaging in Kamehameha battles with Zorc
A few sub-scenes I had in mind
Here, I just want to highlight small events I wanted to have happen, but that I cannot really put in a scene of their own. They are more events that would happen as the story progressed.
At the Egyptian Airport, Gohan asking Yugi why he wasted money booking for his seat when he could have just flown alongside the plane (as the former did)
Fasha kidnapping Mai Valentine and making her come with to the Ceremonial Battle. (I am actually really curious as to what Mai's feelings on the whole two Yugi's thing would progress, as well as her opinion on the Duel itself)
The Z-fighters and friends also coming to witness the Ceremonial Battle. I can't help but think Master Roshi would have a few words on the Duel itself. (Although, I admit, Vegeta probably wouldn't be among them)
Pharaoh Atem, before departing, ordering Gohan and Yugi to keep training and keep their strength high to fight against future enemies. When Chi-chi objects, he tells her that his authority as an Ancient Egyptian Pharaoh outranks hers. Aside from which, he would also continue study, but not lose his strength.
All the Z-fighters and Yugi (since he can fly), flying everyone out of the collapsing tomb.
Scenes end:
There is one final scene I want to show, but before that, I want to specify that, given a lot of this fanfic was about the mystery of Yugi's mother and his own personal struggles with his heritage, I had originally intended for this fic to end after the Ceremonial Battle, as both of those struggles had been resolved by that time.
Epilogue scene:
For this, I had in mind maybe Fasha, Yugi and Gohan completing a training session in the wilderness. Fasha grabs hold of Yugi's tail, but he feels no discomfort from that whatsoever anymore. I also partially entertained the idea that, as time went on and they grew, they'd all achieve Super Saiyan 3 (maybe before the start of the Buu saga) and (since I think Fasha would have helped Gohan regrow his tail, also maybe setting this during the Buu saga when Buu has finally been set free if it got to that point) maybe used a fake moon to transform into Golden Apes and finally Super Saiyan 4, but given the hatred towards GT, I don't really know if that would have worked. Aside from which, with the release of the movies, there are now the Super Saiyan God forms..
I also pictured myself ending with the words: "After all, Yugi's just Saiyan", as he finally gets over his fear of displaying his tail (which Fasha insists he show with pride), and is at peace with himself at long last.
Otherwise, those are the major scenes I'd planned. All that remains is to say: thank you for following this story.
