CHAPTER TEN
BPOV
Do you remember when back in high school or middle school or whenever you had your first date? How nervous you were? But also excited? That`s how I've been feeling the whole week.
Since the night Edward asked me out I've been thinking a lot about him, about the conversation we had, his words, and how nervous he looked. That is very sweet, also terrifying. I mean he is a great man, but what will happen if things don`t work out? I don`t want to affect our kids, the bond they already have.
Once again I'm interrupted in my thoughts by my mother who as usual knows what I'm thinking and is trying to make me feel better about my doubts.
"Come on Bella, you`re over thinking you know? You guys are friends and yes you like each other but if you start thinking about what will happen if things don`t work out you`re kind of dooming things already. Just enjoy sweetie and have fun. You never know what could happen"
She says while she finishes making pancakes, she was so happy for me on Sunday after I told them over breakfast what happened when Edward drove me home. Of course I didn`t gave them all the details, there are things that only concern us and that I want to keep for myself. Angela and Alice almost started jumping in excitement and Angie said she knew something was going on between us and that she was very happy for me. My dad told us that he and Emmet made a bet about how long it would take Edward to ask me on a date. The chief of police everyone!
"I know mom, I am just too nervous. I mean is already ten and we having our first date in what? Ten hours? Of course I'm nervous, but so excited at the same time. I have no idea what I'm going to wear, I don`t have a lot of fancy clothes or well at least not all of them fit me they way they used to" we both start laughing at the same time and start remembering when Alice had Luke. She left the hospital wearing one of her favorite dresses pre- baby. Damn that little elf!
We get interrupted by Emilia who`s been crying a lot since she woke up this morning, I think she might be feeling a little off but we took her temperature and it seemed normal. Maybe she just needs to rest more. Lizy is already on her Granma`s arms who`s giving her a bottle. I sing to her and cuddle with her until she falls sleep again, then I do the same to Lizy. Minutes later she starts crying again, so I take her upstairs with me and lay down in my bed with her, she falls sleep again for a couple of hours.
I must have dozen off because next thing I hear is my phone and Mily`s cries after it wakes her up. "I'm so sorry honey, shh go back to sleep, oh oh oh this pretty girl, must go back to sleep" I don`t answer my phone so it rings again. This time, she`s occupied with a little doll I ran to get her. "Hello?"
-"hi Bella! This is Tanya, sorry to bother you this early, I imagine you must be with your girls. I`m calling you because we have some sketches to show you for the new book`s cover and we were wondering if you could come to Seattle next Friday or Saturday. Whenever you are free to come. Also. Would you mind giving an interview for a magazine? It`s for a teacher`s magazine. They are talking about books that encourage kids to take care of our planet and they called us yesterday to ask for an interview. I told them I will call them back later this afternoon with your answer. It would be the same day and all you have to do is come and talk about your books. What do you think?
I think about it for a minute and then I tell her I will be there on Saturday and that I'll gladly concede the interview for the magazine. It`s like an honor to me to be featured as one of the authors that encourages kids that way. I also tell her to have some books ready to give them so they can give to their readers. We say goodbye and take Emilia in my arms to go downstairs. I put her in their portable crib right next to her sister and tell my mother about Tanya`s call. Then I go to the laundry room to get my girls' clothes and I start folding them to keep my mind occupied. I finish and take them upstairs while my mom carries the girls so we can give them a bath.
After I change them I sit with the girls on the carpet and play with them for a while enjoying their cute smiles whenever I show them their toys. Then I prepare my bag; call my mom to take a look at them while a shower. I put on jeans, a hoodie and flats; my mom already put their cardigans on. When we`re ready we leave the house to their first mommy and me class. I put on some baby music for the drive and when I park I notice Alice`s car is already here. Before I open my door I hear someone`s knocking on my window and I gasp until I see is her. I guess I didn`t notice she was already waiting for us outside.
"Hey! For a minute I thought you forgot about the class! Let me take Emilia and you take Elizabeth. Parents are already arriving. Ugh I saw that horrible Jessica Stanley with her little girl. She put on a huge green bow. Poor baby you can barely see her face!" After she sees mye rolling my eyes and walking back to my car she takes me by the hand and we go inside. Hopefully that girl won`t even remember who I am. She was horrible during high school.
We enter the class and I recognize a few of the faces. Lauren Mallory, Jessica Stanley and Maria. Jasper`s ex who absolutely hates Alice. And then I see Esme Cullen. Wait a minute, Esme Cullen? Then I see she`s in the middle of the class so I guess she`s the one in charge. She asks us to sit in a circle and introduce ourselves and our babies. I quickly learn that Jessica married Mike Newton; Lauren is now Mrs. Crowley and Maria to a French guy that works in Seattle. When I introduce myself I see Lauren and Jessica raising their eyebrows at the sound of my last name, which only means they are probably having the moment of their lives knowing I'm a single mother. Then I introduce my girls and Alice and the rest of the moms do the same.
We sing, stimulate our babies, laugh, share some stories and finally sing again to finish our first class. After I pick up our stuff and put the babies in their carrier, Esme comes to where we`re standing to pick up each of the girls and give them a kiss. Then she tells me she`s very happy about me and Edward and wishes us luck. I give her a hug and we say goodbye.
We buckle the girls in their car seats and I repeat the routine, a little music, driving slowly, talking to them. This time, Emilia cries the whole ride back home. Elizabeth falls sleep quickly and doesn`t seem to be bothered by her sister`s cries. Alice follows me home. Jasper and Luke are already waiting for her there.
"Sweetie, just wait a couple more minutes, we`re almost home so I can hold you. Shh you`re gonna be okay, mommy is here" I imagine she`s a little hungry so when we get home I quickly unbuckle her and hurry inside the house while Ali does the same with Lizy.
"what`s going on? Why is she crying so hard?" Luke asks as soon as he hears his cousin almost screaming. I go sit with her by the window, take a small blanket and use it to cover myself as I breastfeed her. She keeps crying for a bit and then calms. I keep singing and talking to her until she falls sleep. Then I give her to Jasper and he takes her to the couch where they are watching a baseball game. I fix my clothes and take Lizy in my arms. I go sit on the couch with them for a while until my sister tells me is already 6:30. My dad takes Lizy and I go upstairs to get ready for my date.
"Where are you going auntie? My mommy said that you were going on a hot date with Edward. What`s that? Is Josh coming? Can I go with you?" I side eye Alice who just shrugs and reminds Luke that he is not supposed to hear to adult`s conversations. Still, he follows us to my bedroom where I tell him to sit in my bed while his mom and I talk girls stuff. We go check on my closet and after a while I decide to wear the sweater dress I wore to Seattle the other day. I`ll also wear heels and straight my hair.
"Put your hair in a ponytail, otherwise it will take a lot of time to dry and we don`t want you to be late to your first date with Edward. Oh my God I'm so excited for you! Oh Bella! What underwear will you wear? Did you get a wax? I remember on my first date to Jasper, we couldn`t take our hands off each other and he loved my panties, so you need sexy ones" –the fuck is she talking about? - I finish taking my shower and put on a matching set I've had for a while. Is comfortable, it covers my tummy and is black. Also the bra makes my boobs look great.
I open the door and show her what I'm wearing. "Bella, those panties are cute but look like period ones, don`t you wanna wear something nicer?" I roll my eyes and close the door again. I hear Luke asking his mommy what are period panties and I start laughing imagining Alice`s face. I put on my makeup and my sweater dress. I think it does look a little better than last time I wore it so that makes me feel very confident.
"okay Ali, ta da da da! Here I am, don`t you dare tell me you don`t like my dress" "wow Bella you look hot!" We both talk at the same time, we start laughing and Luke tells me I look pretty. Then she fixes my hair and when she`s done I go grab my purse, a coat and my heels.
We go downstairs where everyone is getting ready to have dinner. "Well hello hot mama! Alice I'm so leaving you for your sister!" jasper exclaims and Alice hits him in the head with a pillow. My dad says I look beautiful and to tell Cullen to "keep his hands to himself" we all laugh at his jealousy. I go check on my girls who are sleeping. My mom tells me that Emilia keeps crying for no reason and that maybe tomorrow we should take her to the doctor. I ask her about her temperature and she tells me is a little higher but I shouldn`t worry about. I start telling her about canceling my date and staying with my girls when suddenly we hear someone`s knocking on the door.
"Edward, nice to see you man" we hear Jasper "Come on in, Bella will be with you in a minute"
After reassuring me one more time that my babies are fine I go to the living room where Edward is talking with my dad and Jasper. When he sees me he gives me one of those crooked smiles I really like about him. He asks me if I'm ready and I say yes. We say our goodbyes to everyone and leave.
"Bye auntie Bella! Good luck in your hot date!" oh for Christ`s sake! I turn to look at Edward who starts laughing making me laugh as well. We walk to his car hand in hand until we reach the door which he opens for me. He tells me we`re going to Port Angeles for our date to an Italian restaurant called "La Bella Italia" I tell him I love Italian and we start talking about our week while we`re driving there.
"The whole week I've been very nervous and excited. Josh wanted to come with us tonight but I told him this was like one of those scenes in the movies where a boy and a girl have to go alone. Then he said it was fine but that he wanted to go with us next time." I smile to him and tell him of course they can go with us next time. It makes me giddy that we are already thinking about a second date when we are just starting our first one.
"I know I was so nervous as well, I must confess I started over thinking a few things but like my mom says. I must go with the flow you know?" He kisses my knuckles and we keep talking about our kids, about the mommy and me class I started taking today, about us telling our families about our date, "oh did you knew my dad and Emmet had a bet about how long it would take you to ask me out? I was like oh my God dad you do realize how old are you, right?" He laughs and tells me that when he told his family about our date Emmet said -damn, I thought you weren`t going to grow a pair for at least one more month! Now I owe chief swan a hundred bucks. –
When we get to the restaurant he opens my door and once again takes my hand between his. We go inside and get seat by the window. We order lasagna and mushroom ravioli and enough bread to feed an army. We start talking about our pasts, how were we when we were in college, I tell him about me starting to write since I was in high school and how I used to be a fan fiction writer. He asks me to tell him about my stories. At first I say no but then, when he pouts at me I start telling him about them. "Did you know that you and Josh share the same pout? If you keep using it on me I think I could say yes to everything you ask me" he raises his eyebrow and I get surprise by his look.
"hey, you remember who`s my bother! It`s Emmet`s fault I have a naughty mind of my own. No but seriously. Thanks for telling me about the pout. I have a secret weapon now hahaha. Just kidding Bella, but really, thank you for letting me know" I stick my tongue out to him and we both start laughing like crazy. After we finish our dinner, we order Tiramisu for dessert and decide to share it. He pays our bill and we leave the restaurant to take a walk, he holds my hand the whole time and after we find a bench we sit and keep talking about our careers.
Then our conversation start getting more serious when he takes my hand and tells me how happy he is that I decided to give him a chance. He also says that he liked me since the moment he saw how I included Josh`s in my family even without knowing him first and that he would love for us to keep knowing each other better. "I am serious Bella, maybe this is too soon for you but like I told you before, I can wait. But I want you to know that this isn`t a game for me. I like you, in a serious way. One that sometimes scares me but I think we can make this work. If this is too fast for you we can go as slowly as you want. As long as you want to. If you think you can`t then we can still be friends"
I look at him surprised. This incredibly handsome man is saying that he wants me, that he`s serious about me, about us. Am I ready for that? He opened up with me, the least I can do is to be completely honest with him as well.I give his hand a squeeze." I`m sorry Edward, I think I needed things to settle down first. This. - I gesture between us- it scares me. A lot. Because to be completely honest I thought it was going to be me and the girls for a long time, or maybe ever. And suddenly you`re here. And you are wonderful; you understand what I'm going through. And you are saying that you are serious about me, and that you want to take things as slow as I want? This is… thank you"- I don`t realize I'm crying until I feel his hand in my cheek.- "I guess what I should say is yes, yes to everything you said. This isn`t a game for me either. And yes we can keep dating in a serious way, yes to make this work. Yes"
He grabs my face with his hands and gives me a peck. Once, twice. Then he kisses me one more time, slowly, sweet and tender. He hugs me and I put my head on his shoulder. He kisses me again, this time we take more time, he gently nibbles on my lower lip for a little bit and then he kisses me harder but still in a tender way. It feels very intimate, and I swear if I knew how such a good kisser he was I would have kissed him months ago. He laughs and I realize I just say this out loud. He`s about to kiss me again when we get interrupted by my phone ringing.
"Hello?"
"hey Bella, thank God you answered quickly" –I get anxious when I hear Jasper`s nervous voice- "listen please don`t freak out but we are taking Mily to the hospital. She won`t stop crying and now she has a fever. We are taking her to Port Angeles so we`ll see you there okay? Your mom and Luke stayed with Elizabeth." – I hear Mily`s cries through the phone, he tells me they`re almost at the hospital so he has to hang up. I drop my phone to the floor and cover my face crying "oh my God, my baby, my baby" Edward hugs me and asks me what`s going on. I tell him while sobbing what Jasper just told me and he takes me by the hand and walks with me to his car. The he drives us to the hospital as soon as he can. When we arrive there, I don`t wait for him to open my door and almost run to the doors. He quickly follows me and holds my hand.
We ask where is the pediatric ward and after we`re informed we take the elevator to the second floor. There we see my dad pacing around the floor while Jasper is sitting talking by the phone and Alice is nowhere to be seen.
"Daddy?" My voice breaks and Edward holds my hand tighter. "Where is my daughter? What happened to her?" Then he explains me that after we left she looked fine but an hour later her fever was higher and my mom tried to calm her down. They called Rosalie who went over to my house to give her an antibiotic. When an hour passed and her fever was higher she suggested them to take Emilia to the hospital. That`s when they decided to call me. I start crying while my dad hugs me. After I calm down I turn to look at Edward who is now sitting with Jasper and talking with him.
"Miss Swan?" I see a tall doctor calling my name. Goodnight, I'm Dr. Campbell. "Come with me, you can see your daughter now" I follow him and see that she`s in a small crib, still crying while Alice is holding her hand. He tells me she has an ear infection, that`s why she was upset the whole day, and that as the day passed the pain was worst for her. Right now her fever is controlled and she will have to stay the night in observation. She`s also getting antibiotics for the infection so if she looks and feels better in the morning she will be discharged.
I decide to spend the night with her so I tell Alice to go home with Jasper. That they can let my mom know how`s Mily and well I'm going to ask my dad to keep me company. While I go outside to say goodbye to Edward I can`t help but feel guilty about leaving my girls but deep down I knew they were in good hands. Still. I feel a little selfish.
"Okay buddy. Be nice to your aunt Rose. I will see you tomorrow morning okay? Yes. I will give her a kiss from you. Love you, night Josh" I hear Edward talking on the phone with Josh. I stand right next to him and after he hangs up he hugs me and gives me a kiss on the forehead. I tell him that I will stay with my daughter and that I will ask my dad to stay with me while Alice and Jasper go home. I thank him for the date and everything. He tells me to look at him "what you just heard? Was me telling Josh that I'm going to spend the night with you and Emilia at the hospital. He said to give her a kiss and to hug you because maybe you were feeling a little sad. So I guess what I'm trying to say is that everything I said earlier is true Bella. I`m serious about us, and our kids are part of us so I'm staying with you if that`s okay"
"it`s fine by me" we hear my dad behind us. He tells us he was about to come tell me he had to go back to Forks to check on a car accident so he was going to ask Alice to stay with me. Edward tells my dad to not worry and that he will stay with us. Still Alice decides to keep us company in case one of us wants to take a nap.
Emilia cries a lot the whole night, we take turns hugging and consoling her. Around four am she finally fall sleep for two hours. When she wakes up she looks a lot better and is actually a little hungry. I give her a bottle and she actually smiles while I'm talking to her. That brings tears to my eyes. Alice cries a little too.
Around nine am, Dr. Campbell checks on her and tells us we can take her home. He gives us a prescription that Alice takes to the pharmacy to fill. He gives Edward and I instructions to bathe and give the antibiotics to "our daughter" he then suggests we take Elizabeth to the Dr. to make sure she`s not getting an infection as well. "So, our daughter huh? – we smile to each other- let`s take this beauty home so she can cuddle with her mommy and sister. Maybe their brother will join them later if that`s okay?"
I kiss his cheek "that sounds perfect"
