Chapter 9: Be Somebody
"I feel a million miles away, still you connect me in your way,
And you create in me something I would've never seen."
-Be Somebody: Thousand Foot Krutch

….
"May!" A voice calling caused the brunette girl to turn around, finding her friend squeezing through a few students to almost fall to her friend's side. The blunette blew a loose strand hair out of her face and fixed it as she walked.
"There you are! I was worried that you were going to be late to class!" May smiled and ushered the shorter girl towards the gym where they would have their Advanced Coordinating class that day.
"Go!" Drew pushed the girls through the doors just as the bell rang and all three gave a sign of relief.
"Almost late my dearies!" Mrs. Fantasia scolded and the three took their seats on the bleachers. "But since you were in the gym before the bell rang you are okay."
"Thanks Mrs. Fantasia!" Drew gave the teacher his winning smile and the professor waved him off and started their class.
….
…..
"We're the first ones here!" Dawn followed her brother into the large round booth that their group usually occupied while they ate at the pizza place. He made the observation as they were the only ones seated.
"For once." Dawn scoffed and pulled out her phone to find a text from her friend.
Great, I have Max again tonight.
-May
Dawn laughed to herself and replied to her friend.
He always leaves us anyways.
-Dawn
"Hey cutie." Gary slid in the booth next to the blunette girl and he flinched when her brother kicked him under the table as the others arrived. Ash sitting next to Gary on the end and Paul sliding in next to her brother on the other side.
"Ew." Dawn said in response to the brunette male, who gasped then hit her on the head harmlessly with a plastic menu.
"No touching my sister." Drew warned and pointed at the male who assaulted his sister and Dawn groaned in annoyance being stuck between the two fighting males.
Luckily their pizza came, being as they always ordered the same thing at the same time, and it was already ready for them when they arrived. The sight of food shushed the loud boys and allowed Dawn a moment of peace to eat her food.
"Dude, Kai was so pissed off this morning!" Ash spoke and the table suddenly went quiet. Drew looked at his sister, who set down her pizza.
"Is someone going to tell me what's going on?" Dawn stated and nobody said anything for a few moment.
"He ran laps for an hour." Drew stated and leaned back in his seat, setting a hand on his sister's shoulder.
"For disrespecting a fellow team member, Kai was pulled off the varsity team. It was Coach Surge's decision." Paul stated and then took a bite of his pizza. Dawn shrugged and continued eating; leading the rest of the boys to follow into a normal conversation.
….
….
"Hey have you seen Drew?" Dawn asked as she saw Paul come out of the school doors, she had only been standing by the doors for a few minutes, hoping to catch her brother before he headed out to the field.
"He's already at the field." Paul commented, "I'm the last one out."
"Oh, okay." Dawn turned and started to walk back to the football field, but Paul called out to her before she made a second step.
"Did you need something?" He asked and she turned around to look at him, seeing him standing there in his full football uniform and his cleats making him look a little taller, she couldn't deny how well he looked. She shuffled her brother's jersey in her hands and placed it neatly on her arm.
"Umm... I was just going to ask him if he had a sweater I could borrow but its okay." Dawn shrugged it off and barely handled a grip on the helmet when Paul set it in her hands, turning around to go back into the door of the school after looking towards the main road in front of school.
It took less than a minute for the tall purple-haired male to return, just as the school bus that carried the other school's team to arrive on the school grounds. He took his helmet back out of her hands and placed a sweatshirt in her hands instead.
"Here, you can use mine. I'll see you later." He jogged off towards the field, cutting behind the bus that had just arrived and down the path to the field and his teammates.
Dawn started to walk after him, blushing slightly at his thoughtfulness and held his hooded sweatshirt out in front of her. It was the same one he had worn to her house before, his football one with his name and number on the back.
The 17 year old reached the field, where a few others had arrived. It was still early and only a few people had shown up and were sitting on the bleachers while the team warmed up. The rivalling team started to set up on the other side of the field.
"Hey, did you get a sweatshirt?" May asked as she arrived where the blunette had left her friend.
"Well Drew was already out here." Dawn said and spotted her brother warming up on the field. "So I have Paul's sweater instead."
"Paul's sweater?" May giggled and caused the blunette's blush to return to her high cheeks. The brunette took the black sweater from her friend's arms and looked on the back.
"It is his sweatshirt! Wow you lucky girl!" May giggled loudly and a few heads started to turn their way
"May! You're making a scene, hold this for me." Dawn thrust her brother's jersey into her friend's arms to she could put on the borrowed sweatshirt from her friend. She stuck her arms and felt the warm fleece inside. This sweater was built for warmth. The sweatshirt landed past her butt but she tucked it into her jeans so it wouldn't look so big. The arms extending past her fingertips and the material loose on her body.
"Aw you look so cute!" May gushed and Dawn looked up with a smile only to find the tell-tale flash of a camera taking her picture.
"May!" Dawn frowned and the brunette giggled at the picture on her scene and held out the green-haired twin's jersey so that Dawn could put in on over the black sweatshirt. After fixing the jersey, she laid down on the blanket with her friend, watching as more students and parents arrived to watch the game.
Dawn reached for her phone when it beeped and opened the message to find that it was the picture that May had just taken of her. She smiled at it and saved it to her phone.
"At least I look cute." Dawn said and exited to her home screen, the picture of her brother, herself, and Paul from her first game here covering the screen. She adored that picture.
"You always look cute." May scoffed and Dawn pushed her friend in the shoulder, causing the two to erupt into giggles.
"You're cute too May!" Dawn complimented and May huffed and the two settled down to watch the game.
….
….
Dawn squealed when her brother picked her up after the game, crushing her to his chest pads before setting her down on her feet.
"I'm surprised you didn't fall on your face after that save Drew." May commented and the green haired boy smiled at her and put an arm around her thin shoulders.
"Thanks April! A compliment from you makes my day!" Drew pulled her close before pushing her away to where she was, May huffed.
"Bet you they're going to date." Ash's voice behind her caused Dawn to turn around and see him whispering to Paul, who smirked in agreement.
"10 dollars that it's before his birthday." Paul said and Ash thought for a moment.
"10 dollars that it's before Valentine's Day." Ash commented and turned to find the blunette standing right in front of the two.
"I bet that it's before Christmas." Dawn said and the two boys looked at each other before looking back at her.
"What are you guys doing?" Drew popped into their conversation and they all found somewhere else to look instead. "Fine, don't tell me."
After a few more minutes the group started to head back to the school so the boys could change, the girls settling onto the grass outside the door against the brick walls of the school.
"Hey, do you want to go shopping tomorrow? We should look for dresses before their all gone." May commented as the first changed football player came out of the doors. "Homecoming is in two weeks."
"Yeah sure." Dawn shrugged and watched as more players came out of the doors.
"Do you want to go after lunch? I have to watch Max in the morning." May said and stretched her arms above her head as the three familiar boys came out of the doors with their duffel bags over their shoulders and wet hair. Drew offered his hand to his sister to help her and did the same to May.
"I'll text you tomorrow." May called and walked towards the parking lot, Dawn waved and followed her brother towards the parking lot in the opposite direction. Tagging behind the group until Paul slowed his pace to lag behind with her as she followed Drew and Ash.
"Oh, here." Dawn pulled up the waist of her brother's jersey to take it off, so that she could remove the sweater that he let her borrow.
"You can just give it back to me some other time Blue." Paul said and smirked at the sight of her blush. "I wanted to tell you that I work tomorrow."
"That's okay, and thanks for letting me borrow your sweatshirt. I'll make sure I wash it before returning it." Dawn said and returned the wave the taller boy gave as he walked past Drew's car and towards the other side of the parking lot.
"You and Paul seem close." Drew commented when she got in the passenger seat, Dawn shrugged in indifference.
"Yeah? We are friends Drew thanks to you and that English project." Dawn stated as her brother started the Audi and started to back out of his parking spot.
"I know, and Paul's a good guy. I'm happy for you two to be friends." Drew shrugged off his sister's words and drove along the road, "Just remember that he has a temper sometimes okay?"
"I'll be okay Drew." Dawn told her brother as they headed home.
….
….
Sweat dripping down, greasing her hair from where the strands came from her scalp, dripping down her forehead and making her wish that she had worn a headband. She quickened her pace, catching her brother with a few strides and keeping by his side.
The twins jogged through their neighborhood, passing pristine white houses and gated yards. Several people waved and one of the two waved back in response. Dawn followed slightly behind her brother so he could lead her through the roads. She watched as the white ear buds in his ears bounced with every step, she was sure her own music set-up looked the same.
Drew looked behind himself to motion to his sister that they were crossing the street up ahead and then heading to the left. She followed behind him, seeing the sweat soak his shirt as the breeze took it.
Reaching their home a few minutes later the two headed into the kitchen, Dawn pulled her headphones out of her ears and set them on the counter. She took the sports drink that her brother handed her from the fridge.
"Thanks for running with me." Drew said in between breaths as he refilled his water glass from the sink. Dawn gave him a tired smile.
"I should be running for soccer anyways." Dawn admitted, she hadn't been using her legs much lately and didn't want to be unprepared for the spring sport season when it came.
"That's months away." Drew waved her off and she headed towards the stairs.
"I'm going to shower so I can be ready when May comes." Her brother bid her goodbye and she headed up the stairs to start the shower in her private bath. Stripping off her sweat soaked clothes she stepped into the cool spray and felt the water soften her tense muscles.
After a much needed and much longer shower than usual, Dawn stepped out of the shower and wrapped a towel around her hair and then around her body; she grabbed her sweaty workout clothes and made her way to her closet where she deposited them into her hamper. The blunette looked around her closet and picked out one of her many floral printed skirts, dark leggings, and cardigan to wear over the top.
Her phone beeped with a message just as she shook her hair out of her towel and she walked over from her bathroom to check the message.
Parents just got home, will you be ready in 10 minutes?
-May
Dawn felt her hair and found that it was already drying, she would have to leave it natural if she hoped to be ready within 10 minutes and decided she would look fine without blow-drying.
Yep, see you soon.
-Dawn
After a quick combing and making sure her hair was parted correctly to the side she used only mascara to make her eyelashes longer then decided that she was ready. Dawn picked out a simple pair of white flip-flops that would be easy to take off since they would be trying on dresses today and headed downstairs in time with her purse to see May's red jeep pull in the driveway and settle in front of the garage.
Heading out she placed her purse in the jeep before shutting the door behind her. Dawn buckled herself in and May shifted the jeep into drive to head to the mall.
"Hey girlie, how are you?" May asked the two pulled out onto the highway that headed to the mall, Dawn leaned back in her seat.
"Sore." She commented and May gave her a concerned look,"I went for a run with Drew this morning and I found out I'm out of shape."
"You're not even fat!" May pinched the shorter girl's arm and caused her to squeak in protest.
"Don't do that!" Dawn rubbed the red spot on her arm and pouted. She helped her friend locate a parking place at the mall and the two headed in.
….
….
"May you're taking too long!" Dawn complained as she waited for her brunette friend, she had already tried on anything she liked at the store and found she didn't like one thing. She was about to whine again when the dressing room door opened a tiny bit and May's voice came out.
"Get in here and help me zip this up." Dawn peaked around to make sure no one would see and squeezed in the door to see her friend.
"Wow May! You look so pretty! Here I'll zip it up." Dawn's thin fingers found the tiny zipper in the back and looked at her friend's reflection in the mirror. The dress was a pretty shade of red that showed perfectly against May's light skin tone, and held at the shoulders with two thin straps before complimenting her bust and settled around her knees.
"I'll like this one." The brunette struck several poses in the mirror and Dawn smiled in agreement.
"I love it!" Dawn gave her approval, and made sure to unzip May's dress before leaving the dress room.
"I'll go pay and then we have to find your dress!" May said when she came out of the dressing room and Dawn waited for her by the doors of the department store. She waited for her friend then the two headed out into the Saturday crowd at the mall.
"Let's try here." May opened the doors to a popular store and lead the way to the dresses in the back corner of the store, and the two girls started searching through the racks to find a dress for the blunette.
"I like this one!" Dawn looked up and saw that May held a short pink dress in her hands, Dawn nodded and gave her a thumbs up and headed over in her friend's direction.
"May?" Dawn poked her head out of the dressing room and found her friend sitting on a chair outside of her dressing room, her dress bag in her hands.
"Let's see!" May waved to her and Dawn blushed and stepped out. The pink dress wasn't to girly despite being pink, hanging loose but accenting her petite curves in all the right places, however it was open-backed before having a corset type back.
"Dawn you look so pretty! This one! I pick this one!" May shouted and turned her friend around so she could have a better look, Dawn blushed.
"Okay, Okay! I agree! I'll get this one!" Dawn giggled and pulled back into dressing room to change back into her clothes. She picked up her dress and her purse and went out to meet her friend.
….
….
"What's in there?" Dawn found that her father was right inside the garage door when she came home, taking off his shoes and giving her a warm smile. Dawn gulped and looked at her shoes at she took them off.
"Just a dress Daddy." She said and her father set his shoes next to the door and grabbed his briefcase.
"I can't wait to see it princess." He said and walked down the hallway towards his bedroom, Dawn set her shoes next to his and headed up the stairs with her purse and purchases in her hands.
She hung her dress, still in the bag, in her closet and set the box with the shoes she had gotten underneath it and closed her closet once again. Looking around her room she decided there was nothing interesting and headed to her brother's room down the hall to see it he was in there.
She knocked lightly and opened the door, finding him at his desk on his laptop. She flopped onto his soft green comforter and made herself comfortable. She faced him with one hand under her chin and saw that he was dressed in sweatpants and a t-shirt, looking back at his sister.
"How was shopping?" He questioned and leaned back in his desk chair with his hands behind his head.
"I found a dress." She shrugged and he looked at her expectantly. "It's in my closet."
"It's in your closet?" He repeated then grinned, jumping out of his desk chair. She jumped after him and stayed on his heels all the way to her room, where he opened the closet and pulled out her dress bag.
"Give it to me before you wreck something!" She snatched the bar away from him and slowly pulled up the bag so he could see. Her brother was too nosy for his own good.
"Awww, my little sister is going to be so pretty!" He pinched her cheek and a voice cleared from the door. The twins turned to find their father standing there.
"We'll be going now, be good you two." Was all he said before leaving and Dawn gave her brother a questioning look.
"Mom and Dad are going away for the weekend remember?" He said and she nodded her head as she remembered the conversation this morning at breakfast.
"Ash, and Gary are coming over, I think Paul is too after he's done with work." Drew said and Dawn hung her dress back in her closet. "We're going swimming."
"Can I come?" Dawn smiled up at her brother, who rolled his eyes.
"Of course you can, you live here." He scoffed and left her room to go back to his own. She decided to stay in her clothes for now since she would probably change to go swimming later anyways.
Dawn sat in her desk chair and looked at her laptop. She started to open it but then shut it again, picking up her phone and flipping through the pictures instead. Finding the one that May had taken of her yesterday in Paul's sweatshirt. She smiled, and opened a new message with the picture attached.
Thanks for letting me borrow your sweater.
-Dawn
Dawn set her phone back down, feeling the butterflies in her stomach rise throughout her body.
She smiled.
