Chapter 29
Allana's P.O.V
The wind was still harsh and dry, and it whipped angrily at her cloak and hair as she gazed back over the distance they had traveled in the last few days. They were finally nearing the Iron Mountain, the lifeless dirt of the Outlands border was slowly turning to the jagged rock of the mountain.
Allana turned back to her traveling companions, their journey had been slightly longer than planned, she had hoped to have been at the foot of the mountain by now. Unfortunately, the Outlands had taken the tole on the three and they had needed to rest more than she would have liked.
"How much longer is it?" the dwarf demanded," I ain't sure how much more of this heat I can take!"
"It should take a few more hours to the mountain, then we can rest for the night." Allana placated.
Hoggle had been complaining for most of their long trek. Honestly she didn't know how Sarah put up with it. It was all she could do not to cast a mute spell.
"Then what?" Hoggle asked.
"Then tomorrow, we make are way up the mountain." Allana explained.
"You what?" Hoggle exclaimed. "You want us to claim that!" He pointed to the mountain that loomed behind her.
"Ludo tired!" The great beast moaned.
"As are we all Sir Ludo, but our quest will soon be at an end. I am sure that will must up the strength to conqueror this mountain." Sir Didymus piped up.
Allana sighed and turned back to start picking a safe path through the sharp rocks, it wasn't easy and the hours seemed to drag by. She used the Pointer to navigate through the most dangerous routes. And the Sun was finally sinking towards the horizon when they reached the base of the mountain.
They all wearily sank to the ground, utterly exhausted. Allana reached into her bag and tossed them each some bread and dried fruit.
Once they had all eaten their fill, she passed around the last of the water, she would have to refill it before they set off again the next day.
She looked at her weary companions, she could see the fatigue in their faces. They needed a week or more of rest to get over their ordeal. If they traveled up the Mountain in this state they might not make it at all.
She pondered if they could spend a few days here and allow them to recuperate a bit, but that would set her back several days. She needed to return to the Labyrinth and help Sarah. Allana didn't trust Jareth not to use trickery against Sarah if she continued to refuse him. She wouldn't put it past Jareth to try and sneak Sarah a love potion, She would have to tell Sarah to watch what she drank.
Allana stretched her achy mulches, come morning, she was going to sore and stiff. She watched as the sun began slowly to deep behind the skyline, and the silvery moon rise to take it's place in the night sky.
Reaching out she snatched up the empty water skin and got to her feet.
"My Lady?" Sir Didymus queered.
"I'm going to find a stream and refill this before it gets to dark," She waved the water skin, "I'll also get some fire wood on my way back." Allana told them.
"Shall I accompany you my lady? Their maybe danger." Sir Didymus offered.
Allana shook her head and smiled.
"My thanks, Sir Knight, I will not go far and you are tired, try and get some rest, I won't be long."
Allana picked her way through a path of jagged rocks, she knew from her previous travels here that there was a stream than ran down from the mountain. It didn't take long, she heard it long before she saw it. The water burbled as it flowed over the rocks.
She knelt by the edge and dipped the water skin into the stream, she then took the time to wash the dust and the dirt of the last few days from her skin. No way was she meeting with the outcasts that dwelt within the mountain looking as she did now.
Sitting back, here eyes following the glittering stream up the mountain, liking how the fading light danced of the water. Soon the stream disappeared into a shinning thread high on the mountain and then her eyes could no longer make it out at hall.
Allana sighed, how in sky was she ever going to get Sarah's Friends up there? If she had been a Fae it would have been easy, she could have transported them there in a matter of seconds. Unfortunately though that was one of magical talent the Fae refused to share.
Allana gritted her teeth the Fae had always been selfish, they never shared their power and always took what they wanted. The Goblin King was a good example, He wanted Sarah and against her wishes he had just taken her.
Allana shook her head, she was getting off topic, how to get Sarah's friends up the mountain and live to tell the tale. It was a pity that the Humans had it wrong and Witches didn't fly on broom sticks, how much easier would it be to simply fly them up there.
"How inconvenient that none of us have wings." she mused, then paused.
'Wings!' She thought.
A smile spread across her face as an idea took route in her mind.
-X-
"Are you mad?" Hoggle demanded, "You want us to what?"
The light of dawn was slowly brightening the sky, and after a night of working out her plan, she had woken the others and explained it to them.
"My Lady, did I hear you correctly. You wish for us to fly up the Mountain?" Sir Didymus asked
"On Wyverns, yes." Allana reiterated.
"You do know what a wyvern is don't ya? It's a great big fire breather, that will most likely eat us!" Hoggle shouted, "I knew she was trouble, this was her plan all along, we're gonna be dragon breakfast!"
"Ludo scared!"
Allana placed her hand on her hips.
"First things first Hoggle, Wyvern's don't breath fire, and second if you ever call a Wyvern a Dragon it will most certainly eat you, they consider it a great insult."
"But my Lady a Wyvern is very like a Dragon is it not?" Sir Didymus asked.
Allana sighed.
"Well yes, they are both reptiles and have wings. But a Wyvern has the head of a dragon, a reptilian body, two legs and a venomous bite. A dragon has four legs and breaths fire. Both species hate to be confused."
"But why should these Wyverns help us My Lady?"
"Because I'm going to ask them too." Allana replied simply.
"There is no way I'm riding a Wyvern, not for anyone!" Hoggle stated folding his arms defiantly.
Allana raised an eyebrow
"Not even for Sarah?"
The dwarf fidgeted slightly.
"Well maybe for Sarah, but she ain't here!" Hoggle protested.
"I need to get you to safety, in order to help Sarah, you won't ride a Wyvern? Then the alternative is we wait here for you to recover enough to survive the climb up the Mountain, which means Sarah will be forced to remain Jareth's captive for longer. Will you really do that to her? I thought you were her friends?"
Sir Didymus puffed up his chest.
"I would face anything for Lady Sarah, even a Wyvern or a Dragon!" the little knight declared.
"Sawah Friend!" Ludo agreed.
Allana turned to dace Hoggle.
"Fine! But don't blame me if it eats us!" Hoggle muttered.
Allana smiled. And stepped up onto a tall rock.
"How Lady, are you planing on contacting these Wyverns?"
"Well the last time I was here, I found a Wyvern egg that had rolled down the mountain during a storm, it was fortunately that the shell was like rock and did not smash. I found it and journeyed to the very top of the mountain, to the snowy peeks in order to return the egg to it's mother. After a little misunderstanding, they thanked me and rewarded me for returning the egg to them." Allana told them as she rummaged through her bag.
"What misunderstanding?" Hoggle demanded to know.
"Well at first they thought I had stolen the egg, and tried to bite me. But I straitened everything out don't worry." she assured them.
"How did they reward you?" Sir Didymus asked.
"With this!" Allana said, pulling a small whistle made of stone from her bag.
"A whistle?" Hoggle looked unimpressed.
"Yes, they told me, should I need their help I was to blow on it and they will find me."
"That's ridiculous, how is they gonna here a tiny whistle like that?" Hoggle snorted.
"Lets find out!" Allana grinned a blew o the whistle. No sound came out.
"Well that ain't any good." Hoggle muttered.
"Try again My Lady!" Sir Didymus urged.
She did, still nothing.
"Again" Ludo persisted.
She tried a third time, still no sound and then in the distance, she heard it. A sound like thunder, she looked up and saw three dark shapes in the sky that grew in size as they got closer.
"Oh No!" Hoggle cried, and tried to make a bolt for it. Allana grabbed him.
"You agreed remember?"
She could feel the dwarf trembling as the three giant Wyverns landed in front of them. All three of them fixed their steely gazes on to her.
"There was no need to use the Whistle thrice Witchling, we heard it the first time. The one in the center spoke with a deep voice, that caused the very stones around them to tremble.
"My apologies, It made no sound, I wasn't sure it has worked." Allana replied.
The Wyvern on the right snorted.
"Of cause insignificant creatures such as yourself can not hear, your hearing is pathetic compared to ours."
"No need to be rude." Allana replied coolly.
"Peace Natus." The middle Wyvern hissed at it's kin, before turning back to face her. "You have summoned us here to repay the debt we owe for returning our young to us?" He asked.
"I still think she planned to still the egg for herself Dulaman, we should have killed her there and then."
Allana snorted.
"Yeah because that's what a smart thief would walk right into a Wyvern den 'saying look what I've found'"
Natus snapped at her, but at Dulaman's growl he backed up.
"Answer me Witchling!" Dulaman demanded.
Allana gritted her teeth. Really just because ehe was the youngest Witch didn't mean he could call her that!
"Yes, I need you to fly me and my companions up to the entrance of the outcast catacombs."
"I'm not carry one of them like some kind horse!" Natus growled.
Dulaman barred his teeth at the other Wyvern, who shrank back.
"If we do this, our debt to shall have been payed in full, agreed?"
"Agreed."
Allana gave Hoggle a little push towards Dulaman motioning for the others towards the other Wyvern.
"Ah, I think I've change me mind, I'd rather stay here!" Hoggle exclaimed as the wyvern crouched down to allow them to clamber onto his back.
"Oh relax, this isn't even the difficult part." Allana insisted helping the dwarf up.
"Whats the difficult part?" He asked.
"Convincing Rex to allow you live in the Iron mountain." Allana informed him, seating herself behind him.
"Who's Rex?" Hoggle asked clutching hold of Dulaman as he leaped into the air wings flapping.
"The most cantankerous, unreasonable Gnome you've ever had the misfortune of meeting!" Allana shouted over the thundering of the Wyvern's wings as the sawed higher into the sky.
