Chapter 10
"Anna!" I called out from my room. No one came in. "Nikolai!" I called. Another second passed before Nik came thundering into the room.
"What is it? What's wrong?" I groaned, putting a hand to my stomach.
"Call Kenna!" I screamed at him. He bolted from the room and the next thing I know, Kenna came in with two of her other midwives.
"Okay Elsa, are you ready?" I groaned in pain. "I'm going to take that as an enthusiastic 'yes!'" Her and her girls got to work. They took the blankets off my side of the bed, leaving it open. Nik was pacing on the side of the room.
"Nikolai, sit down!" I yelled. He came and sat beside me on the bed to keep himself still. I grabbed his hand and held onto it.
"How many contractions did you have before you decided you should stop being stubborn and call me?" Kenna's assistants checked my dilation and reported to Kenna.
"Three. The first two were twenty minutes apart and were bearable. The third was fifteen minutes and a little less so. It was twelve minutes till the fourth and awful." Nikolai rubbed circles into the back of my hand that helped to sooth me as the contraction passed.
"You're lucky then. The labour shouldn't be too much longer." I gave her a cynical smile.
"Great, thanks." The girls had my serving ladies bring in towels and used some hand towels to cool my face. Eight minutes later another surge of pain hit. I still had Nik's hand in my grasp. "Nikolai get Anna and Kristoff." He managed to pull his hand out of mine. I grabbed it quickly, "and the Overlands." he ran off faster than the wind. I replaced his hand with a small towel. I screeched loud enough I was sure the whole castle was cringing. Anna and Nikolai ran in just as the pain was passing.
"Hey." Anna stood beside me for a moment and Nik took his place on the bed again.
"Where is Tara?" Anna rubbed my hand.
"Kristoff took Sven and his sled. He'll bring Tara and Mary back here and wait with Mary outside." I nodded, breathing how Kenna instructed to lessen the pain. The girls checked my dilation again and Kenna came back beside Anna.
"Everything is fine so far. Within the hour you should have your baby in your arms." She smiled and Anna mirrored the grin. I kept up my breathing for another five minutes and lurched forward a little with the next wave of pain. This one a thousand times worse than the last.
"Where is Tara?" I groaned, crushing Nik's hand as I tried to breathe through it. Anna's hand was on my back, trying to help me keep my breathing steady and relax a little. This one lasted longer than the others. I felt like passing out the pain was so excruciating, but I knew that wouldn't help anyone.
"She'll make it, they aren't far away." I breathed another two minutes away. Half way through the wave, Tara came through the doors, closing them behind her. Anna moved for a second to let her see me.
"How're you doing?" I crushed her hand when she grabbed hold of mine.
"You've had children, how do you think?" She smiled through the pain in her hand and pushed some hair out of my face. She let Anna take her place again and went to help the midwives. The pain passed, but not another minute later it came back. I screamed bloody murder and Kenna put her hand on my arm.
"Okay honey, you think you can push on the next one?" I nodded. Anna patted a damn towel to my forehead, wiping away sweat. The pain was dulled for a second before it hit again like a cement block. "Push, Elsa. Come on." I grabbed hold of Nik and Anna's arms, pushing with every ounce of strength I could muster. I could hear muffled words in the background. All I was looking for was something to tell me it was okay. More pain was thrown at me and I pushed again.
"Jackson!" I screamed without realising. I could hear Tara say the head was through when the next surge of pain passed through and I pushed again. She called out the shoulders. More pain. More pushing. I felt the pain dull and for a second, there was nothing. I didn't lift my head to look; I was too scared.
Then there was a cry.
I breathed an exhausted sigh of relief and lifted my head off the pillows. Tara and Kenna had a bundle in their arms, wiping it down softly with a towel to get the worst of the gunk off the little child. Wrapping it up a little, Tara came over to me; tears of joy streaming down her face.
"Congratulations Elsa. You have a beautiful little girl."
