Chapter 16 attacks and winter

London MI6 headquarters
The head of MI6 Michael Anderson and the head of the SAS Barry Kzur watched the footage of the attack on the British army base in the Falklands that happened less than 24 hours ago.
Once the video was over. Michael turned to Barry and said "It doesn't make sense. Why would America attack us now? President Ellis lost a lot of troops in the Mandarin attacks and he needs all the troops he can get in South Korea in case China tries to move into North Korea and start fighting South Korean troops there."
Barry nodded and said "Maybe it's being done by rogue elements in the US military. That US general Ross has been very critical of the Avengers. He could be involved in all this?"
Michael said "The Prime Minister is facing calls for blood. If he doesn't act soon. He will literally be thrown out of office in a coup by his own party, or the people. We have a 48 deadline to find evidence exonerating America. Let's get to work."
With that the two men arranged for a taskforce of their best people to be sent to America and find out if any rogue army generals were behind what was going on, or if President Ellis had ordered the attack.
SHIELD HQ
Jack looked around at the 3 helicarrier's and asked "When do they launch?"
Fury replied "Soon. With all 3 of us having part of the command codes. It will ensure only we can launch them. But I do have some concerns. I'd like you both to look over the list of targets for Project Insight. Make sure everyone who is on the target list deserves to be on it."
Maria asked "Do you think somebody is using this has an opportunity to get rid of people on our watch list? Take out two birds with one big stone?"
Fury answered "All I know is. Something is going on and I don't like it. What did you learn when you went to see Justin Hammer?"
Jack said "He was shot dead by a sniper before he could tell us anything. Maybe me and Maria should get Quinn and threaten to drop him out of a plane at 50,000 feet without a parachute. That's if Garrett hasn't ripped the guy's tongue out yet."
Maria said "Maybe we should put him in the chair. That will tell us if he's being truthful or not. After all Romanoff couldn't beat it. What hope will Quinn have?"
Fury thought it over and finally said "I'll have the chair brought here ASAP and have Quinn brought back by Garrett."
With that Maria and Jack left as Fury got a phone call on his private mobile phone and saw the caller was Graham.
Fury answered the call and said "Graham. I'm surprised to hear from you. What can I do for you?"
Graham cut to the chase and said "I need to see you Nick. Now, not on base. It has to be off site and come alone."
Curious Fury asked "Why Graham. What's going on?"
Graham replied "You'll learn in person. I don't want to risk telling over a line on which others could be listening in."
Fury said "Alright. I'll meet you at the usual location."
Graham ended the call as he got in his private plane and set the destination for Washington DC.
As Fury left his office Alexander Pierce was watching on the security cameras and knew that Graham Williams had found out something he shouldn't have and if he told Fury. Everything that took decades of planning and infiltration was at risk.
He couldn't let those two men meet up. He contacted his scientists and said "Unfreeze our soldier. I have someone he needs to kill."
The scientist said "Yes sir. Who do you want dead?"
Pierce answered "Graham Williams."
He then hung up as Pierce looked out at the sky and decided to have agent Sitwell look into Graham Williams past, find out who the man was talking to recently inside SHIELD.
He knew that killing Graham Williams would most likely get Fury suspicious and risk tipping him off that something was wrong. If that happened, then Fury would have to die as well.
He'd just had to wait and see what happened next.
London Westminster Chapel
As the evening mass ended everyone started to leave but one man headed over to a nearby set of candles against the wall and lit a few of them before he headed to the confession box.
He entered and said "Bless me father for I have sinned. It has been 2 weeks since my last confession."
The priest said "Hello again Victor. Tell me your sins."
Victor said "I killed 4 men and 1 woman. They were bad people. It still doesn't excuse my actions in the eyes of the lord though."
The priest said "I absolve you of your sins. Say 100 our fathers and 5o hail Marys then give money to charity like one which provides food to those who need it. Help save lives."
Victor made the sign of the cross and said "I will father."
With that Victor left the confession box and his SAS boss Barry Kzur was nearby lighting candles.
He walked over and Barry said in a whisper "Knew I'd find you here. You're going to America in 5 hours. Get your bags packed and get to Heathrow airport, a man from MI6 named Alexander will tell you more when you get there and he'll be working with you. This mission is a joint operation with MI6."
Barry left as Victor lit another candle and said a prayer.
Bangkok Thailand
An old man sat in the middle of the room and meditated as he tried once again to see what he wanted to know. How was Phil Coulson brought back from the dead?
Much to his anger he still couldn't see what happened and he knew that the alliance he had with Hydra was not getting him what he wanted either. Their alliance had been one of necessity, Hydra could provide the Clairvoyant with foot soldiers and he could help them with anything they wanted to know.
It had been a good arrangement but, as the Clairvoyant himself knew. The future was always in motion and changed constantly making it almost impossible to predict, almost.
He knew the loss of Mike Peterson to SHIELD would be a crippling blow. But it wasn't the end of him or his organization. Once he learned what he needed to know. The Clairvoyant's vision of the world in the future would be one step closer.
Stark Tower
Tony Stark sat in his office and as he was going over some paper work when his AI Jarvis said "Sir I just learned from monitoring Seagate Prison that Justin Hammer is dead. He was killed an hour ago by a sniper as he was talking to his first and only visitors when he was imprisoned."
Tony said "Get me a copy of Hammer's autopsy when it's done and find who his visitors were in prison."
Jarvis said "Sending you a photo of the visitors now sir."
An image appeared on Tony's computer screen and he recognized one of the visitors as Maria Hill of SHIELD. Jarvis said "I've learned who the other visitor is sir. He is another member of SHIELD named Jack Williams, he is the ex-husband of Maria Hill and he was the partner of Agent Coulson for a number of years."
Tony then said to himself "Why would SHIELD visit Justin Hammer what could he know?"
He then started to look thought Hammer's finances over the years to see what Hammer was involved with.
Unknown Location
The Shadow watched as his men were ruthlessly assaulting Carl Berlin's top lieutenant, Shane Barlow.
The Shadow said "Tell what I want to know and your death will be quick and painless. Tell what Carl Berlin knows. How close is he to the truth?"
Shane said "Carl didn't tell me much about anything. As far as I know he doesn't suspect a thing."
The Shadow merely said "He suspects. The man is not taking my calls and his own network has turn against us."
The Shadow turned to his men and said "Kill him and throw his body in the river."
With that the Shadow headed to the meeting room where his inner circle was waiting for him and said "Carl Berlin has betrayed us. I want him found and brought back to me alive. Fail to do this and I will have all of you and your families butchered. No one betrays me and gets away with it."
The lieutenant's quickly left to carry out their orders as Shadow headed back to his room in anger, furious that Carl Berlin had betrayed him.
'The plan had been perfect.' He thought to himself 'Have Carl Berlin's wife and daughter abducted. Present myself to Carl has an ally. Find out what SHIELD know about the 084 and get the girl back in my possession then learn what her powers are and how best to use them against all those who stand against me. But now he turns against me. Me, the Shadow!"
The Shadow's anger only got worse as he went to his office and trashed it in a fit of rage.
Part of the reason for his anger was the revelation that all the spells in the book that the Necromancer gave him was fake. Not one spell worked. He had been tricked and cheated out of billions of dollars.
He swore that when Magnus was found. He would go through so much pain. Death himself would pray for him.
SHIELD HQ
Maria walked down to the mess hall with Jack both of them not saying a word to each other and hoping soon they' d learn who these people were who killed their son and make them pay in blood.
They turned a corner and bumped into a familiar face, Natasha Romanoff and with her was someone Jack recognized from old newsreels, Steve Rogers Captain America himself.
Natasha said "Jack, I thought you retired. What are you doing back?"
Jack answered "The Katana Killer he started killing again, so I was brought into to take him down, I did. Now I'm working with Maria to find the Katana Killer's employers and bring them down."
Natasha merely said "Hope you find them. I assume I don't need to tell you who this man is do I?"
Jack shook his head and extended his left hand as he said "Jack Williams. It's nice to meet you captain."
Steve shook Jack's hand and said with a smile "Likewise."
Jack and Maria quickly headed to the mess hall as Steve asked Natasha "So are Maria and Jack old partners from years ago or something?
Natasha replied "They used to be married years ago and divorced after their son died. I heard that recently they learned he was murdered in cold blood."
Horrified at this revelation Steve asked "Who would murder a baby?"
Natasha didn't say a word as she had no idea who could be that sick.
She only hoped that when the Katana Killer's employers were found that their deaths be dragged out as long as possible. It's was what people like them deserved in her opinion, a slow agonising death.
Meanwhile near the building Cobra was setting up his sniper rifle, the Shadow's men had contacted him and informed him that Ian Quinn would be arriving at SHIELD HQ soon at least that's what they learned from their man at the Fridge.
Once Quinn had told SHIELD what they wanted to know and hopefully give the Shadow answers to questions he had of his own, Cobra would kill the billionaire and send a message to the Clairvoyant just like Shadow wanted.
All he had to do was wait.
SHIELD medical facility Paris France
Clint and the team entered the room where Melinda was resting as Phil said to her "I brought you some visitors Melinda."
Melinda smiled and said "I can see that. Good to see you all."
Clint asked "You alright Melinda?"
Melinda replied "I'm good. Just need to stay here for another day then we can get back to work on taking down Centipede."
Ward said "I can bet you want to question Quinn yourself when you get out of here."
Melinda nodded and Phil said "Jack and Maria are interrogating him now. If he doesn't talk by the time you get out of here. Fury says you can take over the questioning."
With that the topic of conversation and Clint who noticed the glances Melinda and Phil were giving each other smiled and thought to himself 'About time they got back together.'
Washington DC hotel
Graham sat at the bar and ordered himself a drink as he looked around briefly and kept an eye out for Fury.
Both of them were familiar with this place as years ago when they were level 6 agents this hotel was a place they stayed at often when in the city.
He then saw Fury enter the room and quickly sat down next to Graham.
Fury asked "So what was so important that we had to meet on the other side of the city?"
Graham took out a USB flash drive from his pocket and said "We've been infiltrated Nick. SHIELD is compromised. On that flash drive is a list of all those in our organization that are loyal to SHIELD. Everyone else is a traitor."
Fury in shock asked "How do you know this?"
Graham replied "I have a man on the inside. He gave this flash drive."
Fury looked at the flash drive and curious said "Who are these traitors working for Graham, AIM? Centipede? Or are they working for the Shadow?"
Graham replied "None. They are working for an old enemy. Hydra."
Fury said "Hydra. It can't be they were defeated nearly 70 years ago?"
Graham said "Remember the old saying cut off one head. Two more will take its place?"
Fury nodded and was about to ask Graham who the inside man was when a gunshot rang out and Graham was shot in the chest.
Fury instantly had his gun drawn and was looking for the shooter but didn't see him.
Fury felt Graham's pulse and called for a SHIELD medical transport to get to his location as soon as possible while Fury put pressure on the wound to try and stop the bleeding.
Meanwhile nearby the Winter Soldier got into a car left for him and headed back to the base. His mission was accomplished now to wait till the next mission.
RAF base Gibraltar
The base commander Air Vice Admiral Isaac Platt answered the phone and his employer from London said "Phase one was a complete success. Now we're counting on you general to help us initiate phase two."
The Vice Admiral lit a cigarette as he said "I assure you. I will earn every single penny of my fee. Just send me the confirmation codes and you'll have one sunk US aircraft carrier like you want."
His employer said "Excellent. The confirmation codes are getting sent to you now."
Isaac then received the necessary documents with the codes he needed to convince the attack wing that the orders were from RAF command via the fax machine.
With that he hung up and went to address the pilots of the 202 RAF Squadron. Isaac said "Men! You all no doubt know about the attack by American armed forces on our army base at the Falkland Islands. What you don't know is that 5 minutes ago an American ICBM hit London. Our orders from RAF command are to retaliate against the American aircraft carrier USS Nimitz off the coast of Gibraltar. Man your aircraft! Avenge London!"
The pilots immediately went to get their gear and then go to their planes and carry out their orders from RAF command.
All the while Vice Admiral Isaac got into his car and left the RAF base.
10 minutes later the 202 RAF Squadron were heading to the coordinates of the USS Nimitz flying below radar and ready to sink the ship with the first salvo.
When they were in attack range of the aircraft carrier the pilots fired missiles at the ship and as the ships rail guns destroyed several of the missiles. The others hit their targets and the USS Nimitz was badly damaged.
The RAF squadron fired again and with that attack the aircraft carrier was sunk.
