When she's reaped for the annual Hunger Games, Embelia Hackett's only goal is to spare her mother the pain of losing her child- but she's unsure how a skinny, malnourished teenager from the poorest district in Panem is supposed to do that. But she's clever, and knows her mind but not her own strength, and she'll do anything to get back home.

A generation died in the chaos of the Dark Days, and their descendants have paid the price eighteen times over. The next generation has since been born, grown up, and reached the cusp of adulthood, all while remaining ignorant of the true horrors of war.
