Hey everyone! Here's another long chapter! Enjoy!
Johanna walked into the alley where she was supposed to meet him. Finally I would see him again, she thought, after all those years. She looked on her phone, it was 7.58 am. They agreed on meeting each other at 8 am, so Kate and Lanie wouldn't notice that Johanna was gone. She kept walking back and forth and couldn't stop feeling nervous and happy at the same time. Would he have changed a lot? Or was he still the handsome and loving guy she married and had a daughter with? Their daughter, Kate, he must miss her so much. If just everything could go back to normal again and Jim could come home. Johanna looked at her phone again. 8 am.
'Hello Johanna.' Johanna turned around to face the man.
'Jim!' She said and slowly walked to the man, but then she ran into his arms. 'I missed you so much!' She faced him and then they both leaned in to kiss. After so long they finally kissed again. A couple of tears fell down her cheeks.
'I missed you too, honey!' There also fell a couple of tears down his cheek. He let go of her. 'You get more beautiful every day.' They smiled at each other and wiped away each other's tears. Jim wanted to stand here all day, looking at his wife, but then remembered why he couldn't.
'What's wrong Jim?' Johanna asked when she saw his smile fade away.
'Johanna, you know I can't stay long.'
'Yes I know.'
'So why did you call? Is there something wrong with you? Is everything okay with Katie?' He asked worried.
'I'm fine. But honestly, I'm not so sure if I can say the same about Kate. She is the reason why I called.'
'Why, did something happen to her?'
'No, but she is busy trying to find you.'
'What? She is not supposed to do that! Do you know how dangerous that will be?'
'Yes, I know. First she became all curious and asked about you, but I kept avoiding the subject. Then yesterday, I got a phone call from the church where we got married and the priest told me Kate and Rick gave him a visit asking about you.' Johanna explained and she saw that Jim got a confused look on his face hearing the name "Rick".
'Who is Rick?' He asked her.
'Umh Rick is her boyfriend.' Johanna looked away, not knowing how he would react.
'My little Katie has a boyfriend?' He asked surprised. 'Do I need to check him out, because you know I can!' Johanna looked back at Jim.
'No, you don't need to do that. He is a good boy.'
'Okay, did you already kind of scared him with a don't-hurt-my-daughter-otherwise-I-will-kill-you speech?'
'No, I didn't. That is supposed to be the father's job. But I don't think he is going to hurt her. He seems to care about her a lot.' She reassured him and her nodded.
'Okay, that's good. So what do you want me to do now? Because I can't go to Katie and say: Hey stop looking for me!'
'Yeah, that would be weird. But I don't know. What should I do? If I tell her to stop, she would do exactly the opposite.' Jim looked on his phone.
'Johanna, I have to go now, but trust me, I will try to keep her from finding me.'
'Okay.' He gave her a goodbye kiss. He really missed the touch of her lips on his.
'I love you Johanna.' He looked in her eyes.
'I love you too Jim.' She smiled, but she was also sad to say goodbye. He turned and walked away, making sure no one saw him.
Kate opened her eyes. She looked on her phone and sighed, after seeing it was a quarter past nine. Why do I always wake up so early on saturdays? She thought. She turned around in her bed and saw that Lanie was still sleeping, so she quietly stepped out of bed and went downstairs. She didn't feel very well this morning, she felt kind of sick. She walked over to the couch to sit down, but then she heard the door open.
'Mom?' Kate said.
'Katie, you're already up?' Johanna walked in with a couple bags in her hands.
'Yeah, I didn't feel very well. Do you need some help?'
'Yes, thank you.' She said and handed Kate a bag. They walked to the kitchen. Then Johanna looked worried at Kate.
'What do you mean you don't feel very well?' She looked her daughter in the eyes. 'You do look a bit sick.' She guided her daughter to the couch to sit down.
'I hope I don't look the way I feel right now.'
'You're warmer then usual.' Johanna said after touching Kate's forehead. 'Let me check your temperature.' She went upstairs to grab the thermometer.
'So why were you up so early?' Kate asked, while her mom checked her temperature.
'I couldn't sleep, so I thought I could do some grocery shopping to make breakfast for you girls.'
'Oh okay.' Johanna looked at the thermometer.
'103!' She looked back at Kate. 'You're staying right here.' She grabbed a blanket and put it around Kate.
'Thanks mom.' She smiled at her mom.
'Is Lanie still asleep?' Johanna asked and before Kate could answer, they heard someone walk in.
'No, I'm wide awake! Why are you Beckett girls up so early on a saturday?' Lanie said and yawned.
'Good morning to you too.' Kate said.
'Oh Kate, what's wrong?' Lanie asked when she saw Kate rolled in a blanket.
'I'm not feeling very well.' Johanna stood up and Lanie took her place next to Kate.
'I was about to make a cup of tea for Kate, would you like a cup too, Lanie?' Johanna asked.
'Yeah, tea sounds good.' Then Johanna went to the kitchen to make some tea and start on breakfast.
After breakfast Lanie stayed a while just to talk, but them went home to let Kate rest. She was now sitting on the couch again, rolled in a blanket. She wanted Rick to come over, she missed him. But when she wanted to ask her mom, she came with a proposal.
'Kate, why don't we have a movie night, tonight? We haven't had one in a while.' Her mom said to her, enthusiastically.
'Sounds good.' She didn't mind. This was a good time to make things a little better between them, after those arguments about her dad. But still, she wanted Rick to be with her.
'Mom, can Rick come over tomorrow?'
'Yeah, of course. As long as he doesn't stay very long, you need to rest.'
'Fine, I'm going to call him now!' She grabbed her phone, while her mom walked out the room, laughing a bit. Kate still had to update Rick on what was going on with her. When she told him she was feeling sick, he wanted to come over right away, but then heard about the movie night. So he agreed to come by the next day. Now she couldn't wait to look in those beautiful eyes of him. And she hoped a goodnight sleep would help her feel better the next day.
Well, the hoping didn't work. Kate woke up in the middle of the night, feeling even worse than before. She couldn't sleep anymore, so she did what helped her when she was younger. She stood up and went to her mother's room. Her mom was still asleep, so she crawled as quietly as she could into her bed and laid down next to her. She noticed her daughter, but didn't say anything. She just put her arm around Kate and then they fell asleep again.
The next time Kate woke up, she was alone in bed. Her mom must be making breakfast and she was right. She smelt the breakfast downstairs. She stood up and went downstairs to eat. When she was finished, she still had 2 hours before Rick came, so she went to take a hot bath.
When Rick finally arrived they laid down together on Kate's bed. Kate was lying on top of him with his arms around her. And her head found just the right spot on his shoulder. They talked about theirs weekends, the girls night and the movie night and Rick's day with his friends. He tried his hardest to avoid a very specific subject: her dad. He didn't want her to over think things or her mom hearing them talk about it. Rick hoped they would find her dad without stirring trouble. But little did this young couple know what was waiting for them.
The next morning Johanna decided that it was better to keep Kate at home. She didn't want to risk her getter sicker or make other students sick. She brought her sleeping daughter breakfast in bed with a note.
"I'm already gone to work, I will come later to check on you. Xoxo Mom"
She gave Kate a kiss on her forehead and went to work. When Kate finally woke up, she saw her breakfast and began to eat. She read the note. So I'm alone in the house, she thought. She wanted to search in her mother's room again. Her mom had a wedding picture, what more can she have in that room then. She stepped out of bed, didn't even bother to finish her breakfast.
'Mom!' She yelled when she was about to go in her mom's room, to make sure she was really alone. No response. She opened the door and wondered where to begin to look now. The last time she searched the nightstands, so there won't be anything useful in those. She walked to the closet and started looking in there. She pulled aside some hanging clothes and then looked under them. Nothing. She kneeled down to look behind the folded clothes on the shelf and when she searched the closet with her hand, she stumbled upon something hard. She moved her hand over it and it felt like a box. Just when she wanted to grab it, she heard someone outside the door.
'Kate? Kate are you still in bed?' Johanna's voice sounded very close. Is her mom just outside the door? How couldn't she have heard her come in? Of walk up the stairs. Quickly she took her hand from the box, closed the closet door and jumped in her mom's bed. Just in time.
'Kate are you here?' Johanna opened the door and looked in the room. Then she saw her daughter lying there in her bed. 'Hey what are you doing here?' Johanna asked. Kate stood up so she could sit and face her mother.
'I couldn't sleep, so I thought I'd lay down in your bed to sleep. Like yesterday.' Kate said as convincing as she could. Her mom smiled. 'But what are you doing here? You had to work right?' Kate asked so her mom wouldn't ask more questions.
'I'm already done for today. I thought that it would be better if I worked in the morning so I could take care of you.' She said and touched her daughter's cheek.
'Thanks mom.' Johanna stood up.
'I see you're feeling better.'
'Yes I do.'
'Okay let me make you some soup, so you feel better tomorrow and you can go back to school.'
'Okay.' Kate said and looked at the closet. Waiting for her mom to leave and then take a quick look at the box.
'Will you come downstairs with me and keep me company?' Johanna asked her.
'Yeah sure.' Kate said. With a sigh she stood up and walked downstairs with her mom. Wondering what could be in the box.
'Hey Rick!' Kate walked in the classroom and went to sit next to Rick.
'Kate, you're back!' He hugged her.
'I only stayed at home for one day.' She laughed.
'Yeah I know. But I did miss you for that one day.' He smiled at her and it made her blush.
'I missed you too.' They smiled at each other. But then Kate remembered something.
'I want to tell you something!' Right at that moment the teacher walked in.
'Good morning everyone! Take your books in front of you.' He said.
'What's wrong?' Rick asked Kate.
'I'll tell you in the break.' And then they focused on the lesson.
It was sunny that day, so Rick and Kate decided to take a walk outside. Another reason was so no one else in the school would listen to what Kate had to say.
'So what did you want to tell me?' Rick asked her.
'I went to take another look through my mom's stuff.' They stopped walking.
'What? I thought you would stop for a little while.'
'I couldn't just let it go. I had to see what other things she was hiding her. And she is!'
'What was she hiding then?'
'I don't know. But I looked in her closet and behind her clothes she has some kind of box. I couldn't get it because my mom got home.'
'Who says there's something secret in it?'
'I was right about the closed drawer, wasn't I?' There was a silence for a moment. I can't believe he's reacting like this, Kate thought. I thought he would be more cooperative.
'I think you should stop going through your mom's room and things. Se has some privacy too, you know.'
'So you're taking my mom's side on this.'
'No Kate of course not.' He grabbed her closer and hugged her. 'I just think it's better if you stop the search for a while.'
'What?' She tilted her head up to face him.
'Just until your mom doesn't suspect anything anymore. She almost caught you for like 2 times.' She put her head back on his chest.
'Maybe you're right.'
'Maybe?' They laughed.
'Okay fine. You're right. I'm sorry.' She said.
'Promise me you won't go looking for anything.' He said and looked in Kate's eyes. She hesitated.
'Okay I promise.' He gave her a kiss on her forehead and the walked back to school. Hand in hand.
Kate walked through the door and put her bag on the ground. She went to see if her mom was home, but she was alone again. She was alone. So she could take a quick look this time at the box. She opened the door of her mother's room, but she didn't go in. She remembered what she promised Rick. She is going to stop the search for a while. But how can she do that? Especially now when she found something again. No one is with her, so no one has to know about it. After a couple of minutes arguing in her head, she decided to go in. She opened the closet and searched with her hand for the box. It isn't there. She searched again. It's gone. Kate took a last good look, but the box was gone. She closed the closet door and laid down on the bed. She sighed. How can the box be gone? Did Rick secretly call her mom or something? No, it can't be. He wouldn't do that, he's the best boyfriend you could ask for. But she isn't the best girlfriend. She just broke her promise. He's going to be so mad, unless she just doesn't tell him. Ugh she is going crazy with all these thoughts in her head, she needs to tell someone, but who? Rick? No then he would find out she broke her promise. Lanie? She also knows about the search and she could trust her. She is going to call Lanie.
Kate stood up and walked downstairs to get her phone out of her bag. She dialed Lanie's number and waited for her to pick up. When she finally did, she started telling what happened. Kate was so busy with telling what was on her mind that she didn't notice her mom coming in. But her mom stayed in the hall, eavesdropping again. When Kate was almost finished with her story, Johanna did lime she just came in. She closed the door hard enough so Kate would hear it.
'Hey Lanie, I've got to go. Thanks for listening and helping me. See you tomorrow, bye!' She turned around and saw her mom coming in.
'Hey mom!' She said.
'Hi Kate! Were you just talking with Rick?'
'No, with Lanie. I'm going upstairs to make my homework.'
'Okay, I will call you when dinner is ready.'
'Okay!' Kate said while running up the stairs. She tried to avoid her mom. Now that she probably knows Kate is looking through her stuff.
After an hour or so, Kate started to smell the dinner her mom was making. She wanted to go downstairs so she could help set up the table, but when she walked towards the door she heard her mom talking.
'This is urgent!' She heard her mom say. 'We have to talk again, but not on the phone. The same place as last time? Can you be there in half an hour? Okay, see you then. Bye!'
Who was that on the other line? Kate thought. She heard her mom's footsteps getting closer and closer. Quickly she ran back to sit on her bed and pretend like she was listening to music. There was a knock on the door.
'Kate? Are you still doing your homework?' She asked and opened the door. Kate pulled the earphones out of her ears.
'I finished it. I just wanted to go downstairs to see if dinner was ready.' Kate stood up.
'Yes it is, but I'm not eating with you now.'
'Why not?' Kate asked to find out where and who she was meeting, but she already knew her mom would just lie.
'Uh I forgot some files at work. I need to go get them.' Johanna started walking back to the stairs.
'Can't that wait?' Kate walked after her. 'Now I have to eat alone.' Johanna turned around.
'I'm sorry honey, but it's urgent.' Yeah, like she said on the phone. 'I'll be back as soon as I can.' She gave her daughter a smile and a kiss on her forehead before heading downstairs. Well I can go follow her and see where she's really going, Kate thought. She went downstairs and pretended like she was going to eat. She waited for Johanna to walk out of the door and when she heard the door close, she went to put on her shoes and she grabbed her jacket. Time to find out where she's going.
Kate made sure there was enough distance between her and her mom, so she couldn't see her. They were in a dark alley and her mom kept walking. Then suddenly she turned right and Kate tried to walk slower now. She almost reached the corner where her mom turned right, when she heard a man talking. She walked closer and tried to sneak a peek from where her mom was now. It was another dark alley. She saw a man dressed completely in black. It was too dark to see his face. And they were talking so quietly that Kate couldn't hear what they were saying. She tried to come closer, but she hit her foot against a box, which made all the stuff on the box fall on the ground. Quickly she ran back and hid behind a dumpster.
'Who's there?' She heard the man yell. 'Show yourself!' Kate heard his footsteps coming closer. Crap, he is going to find me here! Kate thought.
'Who's there?' Johanna asked Jim. He turned around and made her a gesture to keep quiet. She nodded.
Kate thought he went away, but she heard the footsteps again. The footsteps and her heart pounding in her chest. The only things she heard, it was so quiet. Kate held her breath. Mom why aren't you doing anything, she thought, tell him you want to leave. But it was too late for that. She could see the shadow of the man over her. He saw her. He knew she was there. There was no way out now. She was trapped.
Another shocking end! Hope you liked it! Review and tell me what you think!
