Chapter Forty

Elizabeth was eleven hours into her double shift when trouble finally knocked on her door. She knew she wouldn't be able to avoid it forever, she was just really hoping it would be later rather than sooner. As soon as she saw the woman getting off of the elevator, she knew there was no way to avoid a confrontation; the woman is just like that. Concentrating on the patient files in front of her, she tried to avoid the coming storm. She had wondered how long it would take before the blonde would come after her.

"Elizabeth," she said, snidely. "I'm surprised to see you working and not up in your ivory tower, being waited on hand and foot by Jason's flunkies."

Looking up and raising one eyebrow at the blonde, "Yes, well, I do have a job to do, and I actually enjoy my job."

"You know I really can't believe that you would do this to Lucky."

"And I suppose you are forgetting everything that Lucky has done to me," she replied angrily.

"At least my brother has the excuse of being on drugs, so he's not entirely responsible for his actions. You, on the other hand, we're completely sober when you went to Jason's to screw him."

"Not that it's any of your business Lulu, but that is not why I went to Jason's that night. I had just seen your brother fucking Maxie in my apartment, in my bed. Let's just say I was more than a little hurt and angry."

"So, what, that gave you the right to run to Jason and fuck him!"

"Again, none of your business."

"You made my brother feel worthless! You made him grovel at your feet for having an affair with Maxie! He went to rehab for that bastard you are carrying! And all the while, you were screwing around with a goddamn mobster! You fucking bitch!"

"I did not make Lucky grovel at my feet. I did everything I could to get him to check into rehab. I stayed with him when he wanted to detox at home. I sent my little boy away to live with my grandmother so I could take care of your brother. Where were you Lulu? Where was Nicholas? Where was Luke? Every single one of you shoved Lucky off on me, like he was my problem to fix! I can't make Lucky get clean or stay clean! And I am sick and tired of all of you Spencer's, and everyone else, trying to make it my job. All of you pushed and pushed, telling me it was my responsibility to get Lucky to get clean. None of you supported me when I was trying to help your brother, you all just expected me to do it, and do it on my own. Even when I told you that I couldn't do it, you kept pushing and pushing. Your brother wouldn't get clean for me. Your brother wouldn't get clean for my son, who I thought he considered his own. Your brother only decided to get clean when he thought a Spencer heir was on the way. He stood in that apartment and told me he was checking into rehab so that he could get clean and sober so he would be ready to be a father to our child. He was already a father, or so I thought! How in the hell do you think that made me feel? How is my little boy supposed to feel knowing that he's not good enough for his daddy to get clean? You know what, Lulu, fuck you!"

"Nurse Webber, would you mind taking this conversation out of my nurse's station, please? Unless you are done. If so, then Miss Spencer, you need to leave. You are disrupting my nurse, you are keeping her from doing her job, and my patients are not getting the care that they deserve because you want to come up in here playing that you are all big and bad. I don't think so, little girl. Leave, before I have you removed," the intimidating Head Nurse told the blond girl-woman.

Turning to face off with Epiphany, Lulu claims, "You can't kick me out of here. My brother, Nicholas, is on the board. When I tell him about this, you won't have a job!"

"Lulu, I only have one more thing to say to you," the pregnant nurse tells her, grabbing her arm and forcing her into the lobby and away from the front desk. "The fact is, your brother and I were over a long time ago. We never should have gotten married in the first place. We grew apart, but continued to try to force a relationship that died in that fire years ago. I will always care about Lucky, but I'm not in love with him and he's not in love with me. We haven't been for a very long time. It's taken me this long to admit the truth to myself, let alone anyone else. I'm done trying to make everyone else around me happy, while I'm screaming on the inside. It's not fair to me, and it's not fair to my children." She starts to turn away, but quickly turns back, getting right in the snotty girl's face, "And, if you EVER call my child a bastard again, they will never find your body. You got that?"

Stunned and angry, all at the same time, Lulu huffed, stamped her foot and walked off, leaving the pregnant nurse drained from all the emotions dredged up. Elizabeth sat down in the waiting area to calm her nerves. Looking up, she sees her boss coming to join her. "Bad day?"

"No, actually it was fine until Lulu showed up. I know that she cares about her brother, but I'm just sick of everyone shoving me at Lucky."

"Listen, I've seen the looks that you and Mr. Morgan have shared. And while I don't pretend to be happy about what that man chooses to do for a living, I can see that he is a good man. I can see that he really loves you. Plus, he's always been good to my Stanford."

Wiping away the few tears that had managed to escape her eyelids, "Thank you, Epiphany."

"Look, it's really slow now. Your shift is almost over anyway, why don't you just pack it up and head home. Spend some time with that beautiful little boy of yours. See if you can charm that baby daddy into giving you some lovin'" the head nurse said, teasingly.

Blushing, she surprised the older woman with a hug before turning away. Heading for the locker room, she saw Francis standing there with a huge smile on his face. "Never find her body, huh?" he chuckled.

Walking into his arms, she hugged the man that was more like a father to her than the man that was supposed to be her father. "Well, it helps to have friends in the right places," she laughs at him. "Thank you for letting me handle Lulu. I know you wanted to step in, but I appreciate your…..restraint."

"Come on Lizbits, let's get you home."
