Chapter Forty-Six
Forty-five minutes later the small family was awake and ready to see what Santa had brought for the young boy for being such a good boy that year. The toddler's face lit up when he saw the Chuggin' Charlie sitting under the tree with the big red bow on it. "Charwie!" he yelled. "Santa gots me Charwie!" as he raced to the toy and immediately took it for a spin around the room. As he rode by his parents, he said, "Wook mommy, wook daddy, I's got Chuggin' Charwie for Chwismas!"
Grinning at the very happy toddler, Elizabeth responded to the little boy, "We see. You must have been a very good boy this year for Santa to get you what you asked for." Jason was still choked up from Cam calling him 'daddy' for the second time that morning. His smile, if possible, was even bigger than their son's.
Leaning into Jason, she said, "Did Santa bring you what you asked for, for Christmas?"
With tears in his eyes, "Well if Santa arranged for me to have you and Cameron, then yes, otherwise Cameron couldn't have given me a better present than calling me daddy twice." He wrapped his arms around her and hugged her to him. This was turning out to be the best Christmas of his life. "Do you want to let him have some time with Charlie and make some breakfast, or do you want to see what Santa brought you first?" he asked, with a twinkle in his eye.
"Me?!" she squealed. "Santa brought me presents?"
"Well, I thought I saw your name on…" his voice trailed off as Elizabeth darted out of his arms and across the room to the tree to peek beneath the tree. Clapping excitedly when she found several presents marked to herself from "Santa", she couldn't resist digging around for Cameron and Jason's Santa presents to open before breakfast.
Mounds of torn wrapping paper later, Elizabeth was completely astonished at how much Jason had spoiled her for Christmas, and she hadn't even started on the presents that were actually signed from him yet. She was almost embarrassed by the small amount of gifts she had gotten him, considering most of the gifts she had purchased had been for Cameron. She was staring around at what she had received in awe, a blush staining her cheeks, when Jason tugged on her hands, pulling her into his lap. Kissing her soundly, "Thank you," he said.
"What?" she asked, stunned. "For what?"
"For everything you have given me. You gave me a family – you are sharing your son with me and giving me another one to love, as well. I can't thank you enough for that. This…all this," indicating the presents that 'Santa' and he had given to her. "I can never give you enough to show you how much what you've given to me means," he said, meaning it with all his heart.
"I love you Jason. Of course I would give you anything and everything that I could possibly give you."
"I love you, so much. You save my soul, every day. Will you marry me? I know we have planned to take things slow, but I want you to know that this is what I want and where I want us to go. I love going to sleep with you in my arms every night and waking up with you in my arms every morning. I love that Cameron comes in and pokes me in the chest, even though we both know I'm awake and we whisper about whatever. I want that every day, for the rest of our lives. I know what I am, but I promise that I will do everything in my power to never let my business into our home, and I will protect you and our children with everything that I have and everything that I am," he took a breath, ready to continue to convince her to say 'yes'.
"Yes, Jason. Yes, I'll marry you!" she said, with tears streaming down her face.
It took Jason a full minute to realize that she had actually accepted. He was still trying to come up with arguments to get her to agree, when it finally sunk in that she did accept. She had waited patiently, realizing that he hadn't expected her to say yes and she got that he was thinking up new thing to try to convince her. She was watching his eyes and saw the recognition of her answer. Jason's eyes sought hers and zeroed in on her brilliant indigo stare. She flashed him a smile seconds before his mouth came crashing down on hers in celebration of her reply.
When air became needed, he broke the kiss. Fishing under the seat cushion, Jason pulled out a ring box that looked like it had seen better days. Opening it, he pulled out a beautiful engagement ring and slid it on the proper finger. The elegant yet simple ring featured a ruby, the color reminiscent of the red glass that Jason had given her from the glass blowers in Italy, with a solitary diamond on each side. It was perfect. "I brought this ring back from Italy the first time I left Port Charles with the sole intention of asking you to marry me."
"You've had this ring all this time, Jason?" she asked.
"Yes."
"Oh…Jason. Promise me, no matter what happens…no bailing," she looked at him, trepidation in her eyes.
Jason knew that he had caused this, from all the times he had walked away, the ones she remembered and the ones that she didn't. So he firmly replied, "No bailing." This time, it was Elizabeth who kissed Jason senseless, until Cameron came over announcing that it was time for mommy and daddy to stop kissing so that they could have breakfast and then open more presents. Laughing, the two parents broke apart, picking up the torn wrapping paper and made breakfast for the family of three….and a half!
