One thing my stories crave and work well with is chance, the idea that no one chosen. Things just happen, and that is something I too crave. So I thought long and hard, how to create a character the feels like they belong in this world despite being from the Land Without Magic. The answer came to me, and I feel foolish to have not figured it out before.
A Month Before the Neverland Arc
"What are you?" Evan muttered as he walked along his foster home's outer property. It was only when he looked skyward, in the blooming night sky, that something gave to his vision. He saw a figure, swaying in the breeze, muttering to itself. "How can you be flying?" He asked, terrified and amazed.
The figure turned to him and he swore it smiled. "Hello, Evan, do you wish to find power? A world of magic, beyond your wildest dreams?" It was only here that he saw it's eyes were glowing.
"Yes, but there hasn't been a way to get it..."
"Oh but there is, it is called Neverland, a world beyond all your desires... " The being, a shadow he now realized, said. "...and I can take you there. Away from the horrors of fostercare, your family and all that you have come to loathe. I can give you the peace, power and magic your soul craves. Just grab my hand..."
It was an obvious scam, and yet, the mere potential of desire was so intense he let it take him... he reached out and grabbed hold of the creature's hand. In an instant, he was was pulled up and away, through the clouds and threw a cold space, before a boundless ocean appeared before him. He screamed, not out of fear but joy.
"This is real!" He was beyond happy, the intensity of his joy exploded within him and his laughter only made him happier. Soon they saw an Island, one with a skull and a forest on it. They flew down and he smiled the entire time, as they eventually saw a pack of boys. " The Lost boys, you are real! Where is Peter Pan?" He asked, and a boy, handsome and older, with a quirky approached.
"That would be me." he aid, cold and cocky. "What's your name?"
"Evan, no last name. I give up my family, my past, for this."
Peter smiled. "That's wise... so... what do you want from your new family?"
"Magic, the Shadow said I could get magic, is that possible?"
There was a pause, before Peter nodded. "Sure, I could teach you, but you have to prove your worth."
And it was easy for Evan to say. "Anytime." Drunk on the rarity of freedom.
Something he would soon regret...
Chapter end, tell me what you think in the reviews.
This was a joy.
