Chapter Nineteen

My Aching Hour

Gia had somehow managed to fall asleep after the terrifying encounter with her kidnappers. Well, not fall asleep per say- She blacked out five minutes after the group left the room. The tall, dark man, who looked sketchy from the start, she wasn't surprised that he would kidnap someone. The two older people however, looked sweet and caring, but also tired and their faces were lined with pain. She didn't understand why they would be in on something like this. Then again, as her mother told her as she grew up, "You can't judge a book by it's cover. You can never really tell about people until you get to know them, my love,". Gia shook the lesson out of her mind. She clearly had more to worry about than judging people. Her mind racing, she got out of the bed she was resting in. She picked up a book, it appeared to be a photo album. Inside the colorful pages were photos of a beautiful young girl. The girl looked about 21 or 22. She had the same olive skin and large chocolate eyes as the old woman. She could only wonder if...

Suddenly the door opened. Gia instantly jumped to the bed and pulled the sheets around her head.

"Don't be frightened. I won't hurt you," whispered the voice. Gia cautiously Pulled the blankets away from her head and saw the woman. She smiled at Gia and held a tray with a grilled cheese sandwich and a glass of milk.

"Then why am I here?" she questioned. The woman then put the tray down on the small table next to the bed and sighed wearily. She walked over to the bookshelf and pulled out an old dusty photo album. "Because of her," she said pointing to a photo of a young woman whose skin tone, eyes and hair matched the woman sitting on the edge of the bed. She was smiling brightly in the photo and on the opposite page she was with the fierce, black eyed man, in a white dress. He must've been her husband. He used to be handsome and and his eyes lighter, filled with joy.

"Is that your daughter?" Gia squeaked.

"Yes. That was my daughter," she soberly replied. Her eyes looked wistful and showed a deep pain in her heart.

"Was?"

"Gabriella died. We couldn't make her payment on her liver," she said.

Gia began to put the puzzle pieces together. The older man must've been her husband and their daughter was a victim of repossession. The younger man, their son-in-law.

"You see, when Gabriella dies, Evan lost it. He used to be a kind, caring young man. He wouldn't harm a thing. It's as if his humanity died with Gabriella that night. He began to obsess over revenge. What could he do to harm GeneCo, or the Largos more so, that they would feel the kind of pain that we felt?" She asked. Gia intently listened, even though she could already see the reason they grabbed her.

"Then, the Opera happened. Mag died, the Repo Man died, Rotti Largo died. You would thing that the man who actually killed Gabbi dying would be enough. But no, he wanted more. Then you were introduced. He thought Amber Sweet introducing you was a moronic thing to do, and it was, there are plenty more people who want to take down GeneCo or extort them or something along those lines," she went on. "He and a few buddies went along to the opera and low and behold, you were outside, alone with no one but a little boy. So, they grabbed you. I don't know what Evan's plan from here on out is" she finally finished. She pushed graying strands of hair behind her ear and looked at Gia. Gia was taking all of this in.

"What's your name?" Gia asked the woman.

"Evelyn. Evelyn Roe. My husband is Mathew."

"Two wrongs don't make a right. My mother always told me that."

"Your mother was a wise lady," Evelyn said.

"Do you think I want my life to be like this? My mother was killed. The closest other person I had to family was killed and I was thrown into this insane family," Gia huffed. "It's not like I'm prized either. I'm a pawn. I was forced onto to my father by guilt. Who wants to be there by only a matter of someone's guilt? I'm just a publicity pawn to the company! "Pavi Largo takes in orphaned daughter!". I don't see them thinking me of any value, so can't you just let me go?" she shouted, tears brimming in her eyes.

"I promise you, Gia, I'll help you get home in anyway I can," Evelyn said. Neither her or her husband wanted to be involved in this plan at all. The only reason they were was because Evan had brought the young girl here. Evelyn was determined to find a way to help Gia.

Gia felt a glimmer of hope, but was still shaking with fear of Evan. He was surely plotting to kill her. But how would he do it? Shaking that fear out of her head she began to munch on the food that was given to her. She hadn't eaten in the two days she'd been there. Evelyn looked on and smiled at the innocent girl. She couldn't help her beloved Gabriella, but she could help Gianna.
