Chapter 8
2 months later…
Gibbs stood on the steps of the court house in D.C, opposite stood his now ex-wife.
"For all that I did I am sorry we ended like this Leroy" Diane told him, now it was really sinking into the both of them, it was over, their divorce had been finalised, nothing tied them together anymore.
"You deserve better" Gibbs told her, he felt like it was all his fault, he shouldn't have ignored her, he shouldn't have spent so much time at work , avoiding the disaster that was there marriage, he should have fought to save whatever he could, but now looking back, he knew there was nothing really to save. Their marriage had been built on a bed of denial and the fear of ending up forever alone.
Diane shook her head, even after the way she had treated him, the fact that he still blamed himself didn't surprise her, it was very him. Taking a deep breath she took a step towards him and lowered her mouth to his ear and whispered "You are my Shannon" then turned on her skyscraper high heels and walked away, leaving Gibbs stunned.
After a couple of minutes Gibbs shook his head of the memories and feelings of Shannon that were turning into being about the women who'd left him two months ago in the city of love, and began to walk back to his truck.
He found himself thinking about Jenny more than he liked to admit, she'd got under his skin, the one thing he was afraid of, being stuck on Jenny, not being able to let her go. What annoyed him about her letter was that they needed time to figure what they were doing in their lives, to move on from their past mistakes, but how could he move on if he couldn't get her out of his head.
Gibbs just wanted to know if anything about their couple of days together had meant anything to her and he wanted to hear her say it in person, to hear it in concrete why she left him the way she had.
Of course Gibbs hadn't used the ticket that she'd left that was for a flight at the end of the week, instead he'd gotten on the next flight to D.C and gone back to the solitude of his basement where he'd drank so much bourbon he passed out drunk.
Looking at the clock on his dashboard, he decided to go get a cup of coffee before heading to work.
Ten minutes later he was waiting in line for his coffee, he was tapping his foot impatiently on the floor, his arms crossed over his chest, looking up at the ceiling tiles, wanting time to move on.
He took a deep breath, to steady the slow anger that was rising inside him, in that breath the familiar smell of jasmine and vanilla reached his nostrils, his head snapped round to see who had just walked past him, instead he just saw a door swing close.
"Hey buddy" an impatient, kind of rounded, sweaty man waved his hand in front of Gibbs' face.
"What?" Gibbs growled at him, he always hated, pushy, self-centred, asshole's like him.
"The lines moved" he sweaty man said lifting his arms and motioning to the empty space in front of Gibbs between him and the man, Gibbs just glared at him before moving up in the line, running a hand down his face, was he going crazy.
….
Fifteen minutes later he walked into the bullpen, a cup of coffee in his hand.
He felt his team's eyes on him but he wasn't in the mood to talk to them and they knew it as well, so call kept quiet and went back to whatever they'd been doing before Gibbs arrived.
Comfortable he sat down in his basement chair and took a gulp of his coffee and leant back in his chair, taking comfort in things sort of going back to normal.
"Gibbs"
He looked up and sae Abby running over to him, her pigtails flying "Are you okay?" she asked him knowing today was the day his divorce to Diane was finalised.
"I'm fine Abs" Gibbs assured her as she hugged him where he still sat in his chair, he for once didn't hug her back, still in shock.
"How can you be fine Gibbs, you just got divorced again" Abby told him, her hands going to her hips "I mean not that we didn't expected, we all knew Diane was all wrong for you" she told him.
"Abby" Tim almost scolded the Goth from his place on the desk next to Gibbs'.
"Oh come on, you guys said it all the time" Abby said looking around at the rest of team Gibbs' with disapproving eyes for not backing her up.
"It doesn't matter Abby it's over now" Gibbs told her, he really didn't care what people thought, what the closest thing he had to family thought about his past marriage, he knew if they'd told him what they thought in the past he wouldn't listened, he would have married her anyway.
"Do you know what I think you need Gibbs?" Abby asked with a small smile.
"What?" he asked her leaning on his desk, sounding tired and fed up of this conversation, he wanted to close this chapter in his life and just start a new one.
"You need to go on the rebound" she told him with a grin.
"The rebound" Gibbs repeated the last bit she said and almost chuckled shaking his head.
"Yeah boss, it's when…." Tony began to explain but Gibbs interrupted him.
"I know what the rebound is DiNozzo" he almost growled at him before turning to Abby "No Abs, I just need to…GET BACK TO WORK" he ended up yelling, looking at everyone else in his team, Abby nodded sheepishly before turning around and heading for the elevator back to the solitude of her lab.
Another hour of awkward silence since Gibbs' outburst later and voices could be heard on the catwalk, Gibbs looked up to the space in front of catwalk and was shocked at what he saw.
There stood Director Tom Morrow, not a surprise, the surprise was the redhead he was talking to. Just like a memory there stood Jenny. Her red hair curled down her back and framed her face, her face was lit as she smiled and laughed, her green eyes sparkled like emeralds, to him she was the picture of pure perfection.
"Jen" he mumbled, as if she heard him from all that way away, she turned her head, her gaze meeting hers, blue meeting green, he watched as her skin paled and her eyes glazed over as if her mind was lost in a memory.
"Are you okay Jenny?" Tom asked from beside the new leader of the new second MCRT, from where he stood next to her on the catwalk.
"Yes I'm fine" she told him not even moving her gaze , but he didn't believe her and instead he followed her gaze and saw that it landed on Gibbs', he couldn't help the feeling of trouble coming between the two.
