Chapter 23: Not only Wolfs love Milk
"This is absolutely astonishing" Lauren beamed.
"I am glad that you think so" Dr. Everett smiled. The blonde was really her mothers daughter.
"Of course I do. Finally, FINALLY I get to know more about the fae and the world how it really works not some half truths and myths... Right Dile?" the blonde said to the spirit which meowed happily.
"Knowledge, information shouldn't be kept from you. Those doing it only want to keep you from fulfilling your fate. They keep you down because they fear you"
"Fear me?" Lauren eyes widened. "Why would anyone fear me?"
"Because of some prophecy written centuries ago."
"Prophecy? Really? You guys believe in that stuff?"
"Some of us do others don't but alone the slight possibility that one girl could change everything is enough for many to act."
"Like I could change anything..." Lauren sighed. "And even if.. why do people have to be so violent? Why do they kill and hurt each other? There is already enough pain and misery in the world, why making it worse? Like dark and light fae... There is no need to separate, why can't everyone just... get along?"
Dr. Everett smiled again. "That way of thinking caused already many deaths... You are new to all this, but know that the most fae are stuck in their old traditions. They don't want any change because for most of them it is more comfortable to stay the same. Ever since the fae came to be, they feared change. Not much is different since the end of the wars and if you ask the elders and leaders of the fractions none will see the need to... evolve."
"Meanwhile many have to suffer of those barbaric rules? Humans treated like chattel? That isn't right."
"With that I agree." The Dr. looked at her watch. "I am afraid we have to leave. A fae elder is on his way and booked the library and let me say he doesn't like company."
Lauren's face faltered. "Too bad...I would have loved to study a bit more. So much to learn... Can't I just take some with me?"
"I am sorry dear... These books are the private property of the ash. You can be happy to have the chance to read them. Taking one without the ash's permission is punished by years in the dungeon."
"That's a little.. harsh"
"It is necessary. The information stored in this books is too dangerous and valuable to fall in to the wrong hands. The dark even kill those who steal so I'd say the light are way more lenient."
"Barbaric..." Lauren muttered which earned her a very serious look.
"These books could kill millions, so don't judge"
"Alright... alright..."
"You know what? If you want to you can accompany me to my quarters. I have lots of fae specific books"
Lauren's eyes seem to shine at the mention of more to read. "Really? Please I want to see them, please..." the blonde jumped eagerly up and down.
"Then follow me. It is not far from here. We just have to take the elevator."
It really didn't take long to get to the doctors living quarters. The compound was so big and it was easy to get lost in here. The security was top notch. Lauren doubted that anyone could sneak in or out of here. Looked like the fae were very cautious people. She only wondered why she could walk around so freely here. Did doctor Everet had anything to do with it? The woman had been very nice to Lauren and the blonde did like the doctor. She could ask any question and got answers. It felt incredible. It was like the knew knowledge was flowing like adrenalin through her veins.
After weeks being on the street it felt good to have a real bed and constant hot water again. She wasn't sure how long she would stay here. No real plans, no ideas as long as the others were ok. The others... Bo... there wasn't a night she didn't dream about the brunette beauty. How much she longed to be in her arms again but that could never happen too big the danger. Would Bo want the same? Did she feel the same? Don't be stupid Lauren. Bo is wonderful she don't need a geek like you. She deserves better.
Dyson and Rena were probably alright not looking for her. Why should they? She was just a nuisance now the couple could enjoy life again. And Ivy? She missed her so much. She wondered how her little sister was. Was she missing her too? Did she think about her? Sometimes she thought about calling but at the end she didn't too afraid of her pursuers.
And then there was Kenzi... The young girl she started to sisterly love in only a short time. Lauren felt bad about the attack, hated herself for risking the raven hair's life. At least she was safe in the hospital now. Away from her..
Dr. Everett's voice ripped her out of her thoughts. "I'll make us some tea."
"That would be nice"
"And while I'm at it I'll look for a bowl of milk for your companion"
Dile meowed in agreement. "You love milk too? I know a wolf who is a big milk fan" Lauren whispered while petting the kittens head which purred happily at the attention.
The apartment was bigger than she had imagined. The room was open. Living room, kitchen and even a small lab all in once. A staircase let to a few other rooms.
When Lauren looked around one thing caught her eyes. "Whoa... a picture of you and mom" the blonde picked up the frame and gentle stroke over the image of her mother. She looked so happy her arm slung around the doctors neck while both were laughing happily.
"One of our assistants took that photo the day we made a big medical breakthrough.. We worked years on that project... She was the smartest person I've ever known..."
"Just not smart enough to save herself.." Lauren said sadly.
-.-.-.-
They drank their tea in silence. Both lost in their thoughts until the doctor decided to speak up. "I can show you some pictures of your mother..."
"I'd like that but... maybe.. just maybe later. Seeing her.. laughing, smiling... alive... It still hurts so much... later... definitely..."
"Of course my dear. Looks like your spirit is full and needs to rest..." She tried to change the topic.
Lauren smiled lightly and softly petted the cat curled in her lap. "Yeah... I knew he was special when I found him, but I have never thought that he was... that kind of special. There is still so much I have to learn..."
"That is one of the reasons you are here now. A particular topic you want to start with?"
"How about some kind of fae encyclopedia.. different species and such... I'd really like to know what kind of fae I am. I left before anybody told me so it would be nice to gain more control and to know what I can actually do."
"I can give you such a book but you won't find the answers you are looking for there"
"Why? Am I a rare fae?"
"Lauren... You are not fae..."
"What? Are you kidding me? I'm no human, I can't be. I was like... super strong and I could heal people and myself and... that's definitely not normal so don't tell me I am not fae!" She had enough about people telling her lies.
"No you're not human either... You are special Lauren."
"Oh...kay..? Special... What does that mean? What am I? Please tell me you know... And no half truths and lies, ok?"
The doctor chuckled. "Understood"
"That's NOT funny." Lauren mumbled.
"I am sorry. You just... just reminded me of someone. So... Where was I... ah yes. You are neither Fae nor human. You belong to a third humanoid group. The oldest and most powerful of the three. You may be still a novice but once you go through the joining you will belong to the ancients. And not just any ancient... You will belong to the Dei..."
"Joining? Dei? You mean like the latin word for Gods? Wha... huh?" Lauren was confused. Very confused.
"It is a long story. For now just know that once you completed the ritual you will be one of the most powerful beings known to human and faekind..."
"So... no pressure at all..." Lauren hiccuped. She hadn't imagined that... So many questions flooded her head. "I need..."
"To know more? Of course you do. It's your nature to gain wisdom. To keep and spread it around those who are worthy. Just like your mother did..."
"My.. my mother?"
"Minerva... Keeper of wisdom and kindness... She was..."
"A god?"
"Almost... But let me tell you the story of the Dei of the ancients first, THEN I will answer your questions the best way I am able to. I only know the legacy and a few things your mother told me I fear... There is someone knowing more but I don't know where she is.."
"I am happy about everything you can tell me..."
"Well then I might start. You must know that before there were humans, even before the fae there was..."
To be continued?
