Chapter 39:
"Come on!" I yell up the stairs at the others. I understand why Isabelle is taking this long but why Jace and Alec. I finally give up and find my way up the stairs. Church willingly leads me to them. I almost think Church is mistaken but then I hear talking. Why are they in the training room? When I see what they are doing I literally walk over to the nearest wall and proceed to bang my head on the wall. Jace and Alec are Marking themselves.
"What are you doing?" Alec looks over at me.
"Oh my God I thought you guys would at least get this. This is a snowball fight with snow not Greater Demons. Is any of this sinking in?" I pinch the bridge of my nose. Seriously, though? And Shadowhunters say Mundanes are dim.
"It's sinking in but I don't understand where you're going with this. I mean we know what a snowball fight is." Jace chuckles as if I'm the idiot.
"Do you now? Do you also realize it's a mundane activity? Which means no runes are needed." I try to not lunge across the space and slap that stupid sexy smirk off his face. The two turn and look at each other, their mouths forming O's. I let out a small chuckle and walk out, bumping into Isabelle in the hallway. "Oh for the love of all that is good and holy, please tell me you are not going to go Mark yourself." I let out an exasperated sigh.
"No, I was actually coming to look for you." She stares at me, confusion etched on her face, and then realization. She starts giggling uncontrollably and points to the training room letting out little gasps. I nod, joining in with her giggles. She loops her arm through mine and escorts me down the hall. Finally our laughter dies down to the occasional chuckle.
"What did you want to find me for?" I look up at her. She actually isn't wearing heels, which is extremely surprising. She probably didn't want to twist an ankle while trudging through snow. She grins back down at me.
"I wanted to ask you a really important question."
"And that would be…?"
"Well seeing as you and I have grown really close what with you dating my brother and you being the only other girl Shadowhunter that I know of here in New York..."
"Spit it out Izzy." I laugh.
"Will you be my parabatai?"
"I don't know. I'm not one for commitment…" I laugh as her face drops. "I'm kidding. Of course I will. Who else would help me terrorize Jace?" We smile at the memory of the stuffed ducks.
I duck behind our mound of snow. I army crawl towards Max, who is crouched behind the wall of snow as well, forming the snow into perfect spheres. Simon is peeking over the wall near Max, and Magnus is peeking out of a small opening in the snow on the other side of me.
"What's going on chief?" I whisper to Max, looking through the peephole near his elbow.
"We are wearing them down. They should surrender soon, I'd say within the next five minutes." Max gives me a toothy smile.
"Snowball." I hold out a hand and he lays one on my palm. I peek over the top of the wall and signal Simon. He stands and stretches. The plan works as I see Alec emerge from their own wall of snow, snowball in hand. I take this opportunity to throw it, successfully hitting Alec in the face. I giggle along with Max as we take cover again. I whisper to the group. "Now is the time to attack, make them surrender in their own fort. Max you guard the fort while we maneuver our way across the field."
"Okay. But what does maneuver mean?" I grin down at him.
"It's just a fancy word for move."
"Oh okay." I nod and watch. I give Simon another silent command and he stands and starts to run the length of the field. When he's about half way across, Magnus and I stealthily make our way over, ducking behind trees. When we make it over there we just gawk. No one is there. I could've sworn I attacked Alec only moments ago. I feel the cold sensation of snow going down the back of my coat. I gasp and wheel around, losing my footing and falling on my butt. Jace and Alec grin down on me and Magnus, who has also conveniently toppled to the ground. I slap the ground and grimace back at them.
"Seriously? This is a definite technical foul. You only got the upper hand because of the runes you put on."
"Don't be so hard on yourself Clary, we understand you wish you were as much a genius as Alec and I." Jace smiles. All of a sudden, Jace gets knocked over, falling onto me. I hear Alec cry out as he also falls onto the ground as well. Magnus has hold of Alec but I let Max take Jace. He jumps onto Jace's chest. In his hand he holds a snowball.
"Surrender Jace or meet your demise." He grins mischievously down at his brother.
"Okay I surrender. White flag." Jace laughs back. Sibling affection is so cute.
"Took to long." Max simply states and without another thought, smashes the snowball on to Jace's face. Okay that was cute…
I look up as I feel eyes on me. Jace is grinning over Max's head at me. We were drinking a much needed mug of hot cocoa at Taki's. Max and I were looking through his manga comic. We had all piled into one of those big corner booths, couples paired together. Max had decided to sit in between Jace and I, though. I didn't mind however, judging from the snippets of conversation I've caught; Simon, Magnus, and Isabelle all discussing Star Wars, Jace and Alec made small talk as Max and I conversed. I smiled back at Jace and took a big gulp of hot cocoa. What a great day!
Okay I know it's short but I feel that a fluff chapter was needed. Please note that I intend a happy ending because I'm one of those people. I do, however, urge you to finish seeing as how we only have one more chapter sadly. And I know a lot of you want a sequel but I suck at sequels so for now I'm going to try my hand at new prompts and maybe I'll circle back to a sequel. Have an extremely amazing day/night everyone!
Exhaustion sets in so "Goodnight" - Emma
