Fall in the Fires, Rise from the Ashes.

Chapter 16: Too late to apologize.

Kai could feel his throat blocking. The time had come. He could not back out. He had to step up and end this.

"Kai?" Ray placed a hand on the teen's shoulder.

Kai forced himself to breathe despite feeling nauseous, "Yeah?"

"You okay? If you want...anyone of us can go up again."

Kai shook his head, "No. I have to take him down myself." He glanced at Ray's scratched up arms, Max's slightly grazed cheeks and Tyson's cut up blade.

But on the inside, he was far more damaged than the rest of his team. He was shattering. He was fading.

Preparing himself with a deep breath, Kai finally stood from the bench and stepped forward.

"Go get him Kai! Tell them we're not that easy to take down!"

"I know you can do it! Win this match for us, Kai!"

"Show them what you're made of Kai! Prove them!"

His team's cheering escaped his hearing slowly as he proceeded towards the red bey-dish. Red...the color of his eyes...the color of blood...but the color of rose as well...and red was in Dranzer too..

Kai shook his head to clear his mind and took out his blade. Warmth spread within his heart.

"Dranzer...help me win this." The quiet whisper was heard by the phoenix which radiated to comfort it's master.

On the opposite side of the bey dish stood Tala, avoiding to look at Kai and quietly muttering to Wolborg.

When the two bladers' eyes finally met for a small moment, Kai couldn't detect any emotion within ice blue eyes. Same went with Tala.

"ALRIGHT FOLKS! WE HAVE OUR FINAL MATCH TO DECIDE THE FATE OF BEYBLADING! IT'S...KAI VERSUS TALA!"

Crowd cheered.

"3...2...1...LET IT...RIP!" Jazz man gave the signal and as the two blades began to spin, there was pin drop silence among the audience.

"Dranzer!"

"Wolborg!"

Metallic surfaces of the two beyblades clashed against each other, shooting fountains of sparks every where.

"Tala?" Kai felt his voice blocked as he blinked to clear his vision. There was a familiar tingling behind his lashes, "Tala..."

Tala glanced at his opponent with blank eyes...void of any emotion..

I'm holding on your rope
Got me ten feet off the ground
And I'm hearing what you say
But I just can't make a sound

You tell me that you need me
Then you go and cut me down, but wait
You tell me that you're sorry
Didn't think I'd turn around and say

That it's too late to apologize, it's too late...

Kai was panting. His brother's eyes were...hollow and empty. He felt like he was seeing a ghost from his past. As much as he hated it, he realized his voice was pleading, "I'm sorry...I had no choice...I couldn't..." His words were incoherent as he fed his energy to Dranzer.

I'd take another chance, take a fall
Take a shot for you
And I need you like a heart needs a beat
But it's nothing new,

I loved you with a fire red, now it's turning blue
And you say
Sorry like the angel, heaven let me think was you
But I'm afraid

It's too late to apologize, it's too late..

Tala merely blinked. He had long stopped mourning over his lost brother. The person in front of him...was a complete stranger.

Kai swallowed and ordered Dranzer to attack again. But each attack seemed to stab his heart, striking his soul and shattering his spirit in the process.

The neck and then the chain
The head is hung in shame
I thought that you had grown
That you would carry on
But now that I am gone
What else has been withdrawn..

With every attack, Tala felt the strong urge of doing something wrong. As if each and every move he made was a mistake. But he tried to ignore it when he remembered the pain of betrayal he had felt so long ago.

You used to be like my twin
And all that's been
Was it all for nothing
Are you strong when you're with him
The one that's placed you above us all

Kai tried his best to ignore the pain he felt and continued to attack. Regardless of the outcome and the damage...he had to make up for the past. However, as time passed and Tala kept attacking, he began to feel anger race through his veins. Why wasn't the red head listening to him?!

"Tala...please...give me a chance...you don't know what happened..." Kai couldn't help himself. He was tearing apart.

"I think I know enough." When Tala spoke, his voice was cold...and emotionless.

Kai felt his eyes widen a fraction. Tala had never used this tone with him.

"What are they talking about?" Max glanced at Tyson and Ray in confusion.

"No idea." Tyson shrugged before gulping down some water.

"Don't know...but I think it's best if we stay out of this." Ray looked at the smoke covered arena where two beyblades clashed endlessly. It seemed like both blades were evenly matched.

"Tala...you've got to listen to me...I'm not lying. You know I never lie."

Tala laughed bitterly and attacked harder, "If I had known you better than that, I wouldn't have been here."

Kai blinked away his tears, "I didn't want to leave you...I swear. They...they made me...they tried to control me by using Black Dranzer. I tried Tala...I swear I tried."

Dranzer's pace had faltered slightly.

Tala glared at his foe coldly, "Don't expect me to believe your lame excuses. I've had enough with you."

Wolborg slammed into Dranzer which almost left the dish but hit the rim and toppled back inside, circling the bowl.

Kai had never felt so angry before in his whole life. Here he was, trying to make up for the past and the red head wasn't even bothering to listen to him, "I don't give a damn about what you think of me! To hell with all this! Why wont you listen?! Are Boris and Voltaire more trustworthy than me?! Am I so low?!" He was yelling now.

I wont waste myself on you...

I'll take everything from the inside,

And just throw it all away,

'Cause I swear, for the last time,

I wont trust myself with you.

"Probably." Tala examined his hands.

Fumbling his confidence
And wondering why the world has passed him by
Hoping that he's bent for more than arguments
And failed attempts to fly,

Kai felt like he was talking to a brick wall, "Get this through your head! I was the one who went through all that for you guys. I had to follow Voltaire only because he was using you...and Bryan...and Ian...and Spencer...as a bait to bend me!"

We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves?
Somewhere we live inside

Tala narrowed his eyes, "Just what are you trying to say?"

"I'm saying, Voltaire...-"

Kai's voice was cut off as he suddenly sensed something. He whipped around, only to see armed men, dressed in black surrounding the now stunned and gasping crowd with the substituted musician leading them.

"No..." Kai felt his eyes widening and he frantically scanned around for his own team.

Tyson and Max were squirming as they were held captive. Ray had gone to the medics for his scratches and hadn't been back yet.

"Let them go...they've nothing to do with this." Kai snapped at a smirking Boris.

"Now now, young Kai. Show some respect. Has all the self control we taught you already worn off?!" Boris's eyes held an evil glint, "Why don't you tell him Tala? That what was the point of this...I must say...impressive match?!"

Kai inhaled sharply and turned to face the red head again, "Did you do this Tala?! Did you really want me to go back?! Answer me! Was this match nothing more than the part of a plan?!"

Tala's shoulders were sagged. He had lowered his head and wasn't meeting eyes with the dual haired teen.

"You can't...you promised Tala...we all promised...No...you wouldn't do that...I know you..." Kai shook his head in denial.

Tala slowly raised his head to meet Kai's...and said the one word Kai dreaded the most, "I'm sorry."

Kai staggered back as a sweet smell began to fill the whole place. Before anyone had time to react, they began to fall like sacks of potatoes.

"The world...is so full of betrayal." Boris gave a cruel laugh, "But then again...they say despair leads to betrayal. You'd know better...wont you, Kai?!"

Kai kicked a guard, knocking his gun out of his hand in the process, who had come to take him.

Boris tutted, "Kai...would you like it if your friends...over there...had a clean hole in their heads?"

Kai froze.

"No Kai! Don't listen to him!" Max managed to yell.

"Hey! What do you want, you freak?!" Tyson spat.

"Ah boys! Your precious Kai here...knows very well what I desire. Wouldn't you agree, Kai?!" Boris took a step forward.

Kai's head was spinning...and as he collapsed, the realm of darkness pulled him into it's abyss and the last thing he saw...was flaming red hair and ice blue eyes...which had crystalline drops escaping them.

A black van which had been parked outside was driven at full speed after it had been loaded with what purpose it had come here for. And dust had rose to cover it's tracks...
