Broken Promise
Chapter 19
- How did they got called for the Festival? – asked May with eyes filled of curiosity - Because, you know...it's difficult to get called.
- I don't know, I think that they just become famous – I laughed – But, first of all. When my parents got out of jail by proving their innocence, my aunt told me that it was time to return to Iowa. She didn't say anything about jail or anything. She just said it was time to go.
- Of course you didn't go back! – she said crossing her arms.
- Of course not! I was not abandoning Sophie and Leon in that important moment. After all, I got used to them and being taken away would have been too sad. My aunt decided she didn't want to fight with me anymore, so she agreed to keep me for more time. Also, my parents were able to send her money for my studies…so I think that helped to convince her. At least I was staying until I finished school. I had like a year left, so it was good enough.
- You will return to America? – asked Sophie with a worried look.
- No…well, yes. But not yet – I replied nervously.
- What are we going to do without you? – she asked troubled.
- Live like you have always been living? - I couldn't think about myself living without them either.
- But Rogue! - she said grabbing my arm - You are our friend! We want you to stay! We have got help from you many times. Even now, I had to ask for your help because Leon won't give me a harsher training! – complained Sophie.
- He cares for you, that's why he won't do it. He prefers to pressure himself, rather than bothering you – I explained - He said that...
- But, we are a team! He shouldn't bear with all the responsibility. He's training way harder - said Sophie annoyed.
- You are right, he shouldn't. I've tried to change his mind…but, he's too stubborn.
- I feel like I'm just a burden – she said.
- That's why their coach said he never thought Leon could become Sophie's demon. He was too soft with her – concluded May.
-She was his little sister, his only family…What did you expected?
- You have a point…
- So, I helped Sophie to get a more "elaborated" training. Even though I feel I really did nothing – I giggled – Maybe I just helped in keeping the training a secret from Leon. Oh and I also "helped" when they were training together. Actually, I think they just liked to train when I was around. I had plenty of free time, since I was not going to the ballet classes anymore. I spent that free time to be with them.
- Rogue, the International Festival Circus is coming. I'm very excited! We will finally show the Angel's Maneuver! And I want to ask you something more… - said Sophie enthusiastically.
- You can ask me anything! – I said smiling.
- Would you…make a costume for us? For our performance? – she asked.
- I can't believe you are really asking me that!
- If I'm asking too much, don't worry…you don't have to do it…I'm sorry! – she said disappointed.
- No! You got me wrong! I'm happy! You and Leon will wear my first costume! I'm really happy! – I made a pause – But, I know nothing! I don't know where to begin! What am I going to do?! – I asked.
- You had that dream and never did anything to achieve it? – asked Leon.
- Leon, don't be inconsiderate with her! – she said turning to him - Don't worry Rogue, there's plenty of time! – she said smiling.
- I never thought the chance to get closer to my dream could come so fast. I was kind of worried. First of all, I decided to begin the design for the costumes, later on I could worry about the making. However, it was my first time doing something like that…so I wasn't sure about what was the right thing to do. I don't know why, but I asked Leon about it. Well, I didn't trusted anyone else but Leon and Sophie. Maybe that was why...
- Leon…I'm not sure about what to do! – I said as we walked through the streets with no course.
- About what? - he said turning to me.
- Your costumes…
- Come on Rogue! Don't worry about it! – he said with a dazzling smile.
- I do worry! It's an important event for you and Sophie and I don't want to ruin it! I don't know if I will be able to do them - I said stopping suddenly.
- You always take everything too seriously… - he sad patting my shoulder - I said "Don't worry"
- Why wouldn't I?
- Rogue…have you been to the Eiffel Tower? – he asked.
- Huh? Why are you asking this? But…well, no…not yet.
- Do you want to go? Like…now? – he asked eagerly.
- What? Right now? Isn't it a little bit late?
- No, it's actually perfect! Let's go! - he said dragging me.
We arrived there, the Tower was lighted up from head to toes, including a lighthouse on the very top that sent out beams, as well as glimmering lights. We walked through the Champ de Mars and we laid on the grass gazing up to its amazing beams. It was so beautiful. After a while, we got up and headed towards the Tower. We walked around it and then, we were under it.
- Sophie told me you will be going back to America… - he said looking to the sky.
- Yeah…not yet. But, eventually I'll be leaving France… - I said upset.
- Do you know what people say about the Eiffel Tower? – asked Leon.
- What do people sa…
Before I could finish what I was saying, Leon stole me a kiss. I didn't expect it and I was stunned. I couldn't say or do anything. When I was able to come to my senses, I slapped him.
- Why you did that? – I asked annoyed.
- They say that kissing someone while standing underneath the Tower, guarantees your return – he explained – Some time in your life, you will be returning here. You should be thanking me instead of slapping me - he said rubbing his cheek.
- And you did return! It's true! Damn it, I should have kissed someone under the Tower when I was in France! – said May.
- May, you did return too! When you went to perform to the circus!
- Oh, you are right. I almost forgot it. Anyway, it's cool to believe it works! – she said laughing – Sorry for interrupting again, continue please.
- After that, Leon asked me if I wanted to climb the Tower.
- Uhm…is it high? – I asked anxious.
- I can hold you close, if you are afraid of heights – he said.
- I don't need that! I'm not afraid! Let's go – I commanded approaching to the steps.
We took the steps to the first platform. We saw displays about the tower's history. There was a postal branch there, so I sent an Eiffel postcard to my parents and to my brothers. There was also a restaurant "Altitude 95" and a souvenir shop.
- Are you hungry? – asked Leon.
- No, I'm fine.
- Okay, then let's go to the second platform. We will have a better view – he explained as he took my hand.
We took the steps again. Out of breath, giggling, and exhilarated, we arrived to the second platform, quickly we picked a spot against the rail, and watched the glow of the city, and talked about nothing in particular. We could see Notre Dame, the Louvre and the city of Paris for miles.
- The Paris city center is free of high rise buildings; only the outlying areas surrounding the city are populated with high rises, leaving the city center a wonder to behold from the tower. The whole city was laid out in wonderful detail. The view was amazing, but at the same time, as we walked to the edge I felt dizzy.
- Rogue…are you okay? – he asked.
- Yeah, I'm fine – I said grabbing his arm.
- I was thinking how nothing lasts, and what a shame that is – he said with his eyes on the radiant city.
- Some things last forever – I said without looking at him.
- What things? – he said turning to me.
- Memories…
After a while, we got down.
- Thank you for bringing me here, I'll never forget it – I said.
He nodded.
- Actually, it was my first time climbing it – he confessed.
- For real? You must be kidding! - I exclaimed suprised.
- No, it's true - he said grinning.
- Then, I guess Sophie hasn't climbed either
- No, she hasn't.
- Why we didn't bring her? She would have loved it.
- Uhm…maybe the next time...
- It's okay. Thank you… I think I got inspired. I know how to finish the design of the costumes! But, I still don't know how to make them! – I said laughing.
- You had no idea? Then, what did you do? – asked May.
- Surprisingly, my aunt helped me. She was very good at sewing and she taught me. I lied to her; I told her I wanted to make some costumes for the ballet. At the beginning, she kind of doubted. But, she believed I still attended ballet classes. She was completely unaware of the fight with Leon, since no more incidents happened around us.
- So you got that knowledge from her! Well, at least she did something good for you… - said May unsure.
- Maybe it was the only thing…
- She couldn't have been that bad…or was she? - she asked moving from the couch to the bed.
- Well…
Author's notes:
This was a very short chapter. But as I said before...the last one and this one, were originally one single chapter. Basically, this chapter(18&19) is intended to give some "background" of the relationship between Rogue, Leon and Sophie. Also, to give some "hints" of how Rogue's aunt is. So, I can't say many things happened xD The next chapter has all the action! hahahah Wait for it : D
cami (neko-rin): The sad thing is that she wasn't even rich! hahah
