Broken Promise

Chapter 22

- When I knew that I was going back to France…I didn't feel anything unusual. At that moment, France didn't mean much to me. It was just a place where I spent some time of my life. But, when I told Leon I was going to France too, he began to insinuate things. But, nothing made any sense to me. I mean, he didn't know about my amnesia. Probably he thought I knew what he was talking about. When I arrived to France, it just felt familiar…and nothing more. It's a funny thing about returning home. Nothing changes. Everything looks the same, feels the same, even smells the same. You realize what's changed, is you…

- How did you recall everything? – asked May impatiently.

- After some days, I began to feel uncomfortable. I moved around France naturally, but I had a weird feeling – a memory flashed through my mind - Do you remember the day when you saw me with Leon in the trapeze?

- Oh…yes! It was so strange.

- Well, when that happened…Leon was more direct with his comments about the past. Like, he told me "you were a ballerina" and I was so confused, because for me…it had no sense that he knew that information. No one in Kaleido Stage knew! Also, he began to act weird. Whenever we met, he didn't want me to go away and he began to chase me during those days.

- He was following you around? What a creep! – exclaimed May taking a sip to her drink.

I laughed.

- When I was walking randomly through the streets, I began to feel sick. I was in the streets that were my home during those years. Now that I think about it, I ended up in the park where I talk with Sophie for the first time. I wasn't aware of that. Leon appeared when I was there and he said "you can't ignore it while being here". I was way too confused, but I also felt I wanted to know what he was talking about.

- Did you ask him?

- No. But I didn't have to. He came to me with answers. I guess he was sick of me avoiding his questions and ignoring his comments, because when it was my birthday; he made me remember everything.

- How? – asked May intrigued.

- He took me to Sophie's grave. There, everything came back to me. It was too painful and I felt too guilty. I lived in a lie for years…and I broke my promise. In that moment, I cried all the tears that I didn't cry before. I couldn't believe that my mind had ignored everything that was related to them. Also, I felt anger…anger towards my aunt and Jack.

- Of course! They didn't tell you about Sophie or Leon! But, did Jack know anything?

- I didn't know. In that moment, I felt terrible with Leon. I knew I had abandoned him years ago…and when we met in Kaleido Stage, I treated him like if he was a complete stranger. I was the worst – I said punching the bed.

- But it wasn't on purpose…

- I was surprised because he seemed very understanding…even though I couldn't say anything to him in that moment. Actually, it wasn't a good idea to say anything…since I didn't know what happened exactly. He wanted me to tell him the truth…but I didn't know it either.

- How did you get to know?

- Asking! I called Jack and asked him to tell me truth. He did hesitate to tell it, probably he felt really guilty.

- What did he said?

- He said that one day, he was walking randomly and found a fainted girl on the street. Since the girl wouldn't wake up, he took her to the hospital. The girl didn't have any belonging with her, so it was difficult to know who she was. When he took her to hospital, he was asked a few things about the girl, but he knew nothing besides the fact he found her fainted. The staff of the hospital said they would try to investigate, but probably the best was to wait until the girl regained consciousness. So, he visited the girl every day until she woke up.

- So, how did the motorcycle story come up? – asked May.

- Wait for it!

- I'm sorry, continue.

- He told me that when the girl woke up, he tried to speak to her, but she seemed to be too confused…so he called the doctor. The doctor asked the girl for their parents' phone number and then asked him to leave. He said that he wanted to stay until they were sure the girl was all right. When the doctor called her parents, the mother told him that they couldn't take a flight from America to France in that moment. The best was to contact her sister, who was supposedly taking care of her daughter. After an hour or so, the girl's aunt arrived and rushed to the room. Then, se got out very worried.

- Madam…

- I'm Miss Jokinen.

- Miss Jokinen, is your niece okay? – he asked to her.

- I don't think so…she is talking non sense! By the way…Who are you? A school friend? – she asked.

- Oh, I'm sorry. I'm Jack Evans…I don't know your niece. I found her by chance, fainted on the streets…and I brought her here – he replied.

- Fainted? Was she alone? Was she hurt? – she asked.

- She seemed to be alone. She didn't have any visible injury.

- And…what have the doctor said?

- She was in coma. But, apparently she is all right.

- In coma? – she asked startled.

- She has been here for 3 days

- Well, I must talk to the doctor…I'm worried.

- Why?

- She seems to have lost her mind!

- Is that so? I'm sorry.

- Don't worry, you should go back home. Thanks for taking care of her – she said as she took her leave.

- I would like to stay. Just to see if she is all right.

- Is weird that you talk about yourself in third person – said May.

- I know! But I'm replicating his story. The thing is…according to what my aunt said…the doctor figured that I had some brain damage. Even though they hadn't notice anything wrong with me. So, the doctor made me questions, to see if there was something wrong. According to my answers and to what my aunt and Jack said...the doctor concluded I had amnesia. But, in order to find out whether there was any physical damage or brain abnormality, the doctor ordered some examinations. After the examinations were done, the doctor talked with my aunt.

- What did they talk about?

- Jack didn't know. But he told me what he talked about with my aunt.

- Uhm, Jack…right? – she asked as she approached.

- Yes.

- Can I ask you a favor? Well, you don't have to agree…but I would really appreciate it.

- How much will you appreciate it? – he asked mischievously.

- How much? What do you mean?

- Madam, you don't know me and I don't know you…Maybe it should be an exchange – he said crossing his arms.

- An exchange?

- I help you, you help me.

- Well, that's fair. What do you want?

- You go first…depending of the favor you want to ask me, I'll ask for something equivalent.

- Okay….

- So, what is it?

- I need you to help me trick my niece.

- Explain yourself please…

- The doctor says her amnesia was caused by something psychological…not physical. Also, that eventually she will remember everything by herself…except "that". She will only remember it if she is told – she sighed- But, I don't want her to remember that…she shouldn't remember it…and she must go back to America immediately.

- So, you need help to set up some story and fool her?

- Well, maybe it's going to be more than that…

- Okay. I get it.

- Will you do it? What can I do for you?

- I'm staying illegally in France. My visa expired sometime ago. I want to return to America, but I don't want to be deported. Help me get out here clean.

- Uhm…maybe that's too much.

- You won't help me? Don't worry; I'm not a delinquent or anything. You just have to talk to the embassy and say a couple of lies…as good as the ones you want me to tell your niece.

- Will I have any problems? – she asked worried.

- I don't think so. I'll tell you later what you need to do.

- Okay.

- Now, tell me exactly what you want me to do with your niece.

- Wow! Those two joined together into something nasty! – exclaimed May.

- Yeah…He told me that my aunt said that I shouldn't remember two people that were involved with me while I was on France. She didn't tell him more details, since she didn't want him to throw her under the bus…either on purpose or accidentally. So, they made up a story of how he found me and what happened to me. She also told him some details about my life in France and the places I knew in France. If any of those things had any relation with "the two people", they would come up with some story to cover the gap related to them.

- Your aunt really hated them! That's too much! – said my friend standing up bothered.

- I really can't understand her reasons to do that…

- Me neither! – she exclaimed angry.

- Jack told me, that she asked him to go around the city with me to help remember…avoiding certain places that could affect my memory. My aunt wasn't sure if those places could make me remember anything, but it was a precaution. While Jack did this for some days, my aunt was doing her part of the deal. When I recovered "all" my memories and my aunt was finished with Jack's business, my aunt got Jack and me a plane ticket to America. She made Jack promise he would never tell anything to me about the gambit.

- Damn, that was too much. Your aunt was the worst – said May irritated.

- And you haven't heard her side of the story!

- Oh my… - she said taking her seat again.

I laughed.

- Wait, if Jack promised that to your aunt…why did he tell you everything? – asked May.

- Well, Jack fell in love with me. So, he felt really bad about what he had done. He said he wanted to tell me everything since some time ago, but he couldn't. He thought that if he confessed everything…I would have hated him and ran away. And he didn't want that…

- Rogue! You are a heartbreaker! – she gave me an elbow.

- Cut it out! – I said standing up.

- Oh and you kissed him! I remember that! Why did you kiss him? You don't love him, right?

- No, I don't love him. Uhm…I can't remember why I did that! Stop it!

- Whatever – she laughed hard - How do you feel about him now?

- I think he is disgusting. But, I think I might forgive him someday…because, if we ignore that incident…he was a good friend.

- But you can't ignore it that easily!

- Of course not…
